It would be an 'extraordinary step' for China to attack the US over Taiwan

für € kaufen ···· Sky News Australia
Former Australian defence head of China analysis Paul Monk says it's unlikely that China would attack the United States as a preliminary operation against Taiwan.\n\n"It would be an extraordinary step for China to take, it would require that the PLA and Xi Jinping were very confident not only that their strikes in the first instance would be very effective, but that the US would then cave," he told Sky News host Catherine McGregor.\n\n"It's impossible, in my imagination, to believe that the United States would say, 'oh well, we'll roll over'."\n\nHe said the US public would be "up in arms" and the situation would be far worse than 9/11, which has "got to be in the minds of strategic thinkers in Beijing".\n\n"In my view, what (China's) hoping is that by keeping their rhetoric unbending, by keeping up the hazing and threatening and pressure on Taiwan, they hope they can win without going to war." ····· 111475257

Religious freedom 'could be less free' if enshrined in law

für € kaufen ···· Sky News Australia
Herald Sun columnist Caleb Bond says enshrining religious freedom in law could result in a system where there is less religious freedom.\n\n"The problem with codifying any freedom or right in law, be it religious or otherwise, is that you always have the problem where one person's rights will have to trump another person's rights," he told Sky News host Cory Bernardi. \n\nHe said it would result in a situation where "you basically have to make a decision as to whether one person has more rights than another".\n\n"The system we have at the moment, which is under the constitution, that religious freedom in most forms is protected, works perfectly fine. \n\n"And I fear that if we go down the road of creating laws that otherwise enshrine religious freedom, you could actually end up in a position where religion and practice of religion could be less free than it is currently." ····· 111475256

Political strategist Brigid Meney says NSW Planning Minister Rob Stokes' ban on dark-coloured roofs may lead to an increase in house prices.\n\n"I don't think that people actually care about the colour of their roofs," Ms Meney told Sky News host Cory Bernardi.\n\n"But when it comes to big announcements and changes like this it does affect material supply chains, which can lead to added costs, which can drive up housing prices even further, which can delay new housing builds if this kind of ban is implemented abruptly or ... without much thought put into it. \n\n"So it's about the colour, yes, but it's actually about the housing price." ····· 111475252

Politico justifies ‘dodgy’ Rittenhouse fact check with ‘Orwellian’ verbal gymnastics

für € kaufen ···· Sky News Australia
Politico had to go through ?Orwellian double speak verbal gymnastics? to justify a dodgy fact check on Kyle Rittenhouse’s possession of an AR-15, according to Digital Editor Jack Houghton.\n\nThe Kyle Rittenhouse trial in America centres around a 17-year-old who shot two protesters dead and injured a third during civil unrest riots.\n\nProsecutors had charged Rittenhouse in relation to bringing his AR-15 rifle across state borders before the shooting, but the court had not ruled on the issue.\n\nFact checker Daniel Funke, while working for Politico, fact checked the claim that it was perfectly legal to carry the particular gun across state borders, and declared the claim false.\n\nThis week the judge in the trial, due to the rifle’s length, found it was in fact legal for Rittenhouse to take the rifle across state borders.\n\nPolitico subsequently issued a statement on Funke’s fact check which read: ?In August 2020, we fact-checked a claim that it was ?perfectly legal? for Rittenhouse to possess an AR-15 without parental supervision. Our reporting found that it was far from perfectly legal, and that it was, in fact, legally murky. That’s why we rated the claim False.?\n\nMr Houghton said it should not be a defence that ?because Funke or Politico didn’t understand the law it meant the law was murky?.\n\n?A judge did understand the law and the charge was dismissed on the spot,? he said.\n\n?His words were clear, not murky.? ····· 111475250

The ABC’s decision to conduct an inquiry into its own complaints system is at least a ?surface level admission? there are issues with the process, according to Digital Editor Jack Houghton.\n\nLiberal Senator Andrew Bragg, chair of the Senate’s Environment and Communications Committee, recently announced an inquiry into the ABC complaints handling system.\n\nABC chair Ita Buttrose called the inquiry a ?partisan political exercise? which aims to ?undermine the ABC’s independence?.\n\nMr Houghton said it is ?no secret? there have been a string of high-profile reporting errors which have been published by the ABC in the last year.\n\n?Many, including myself, find the ABC’s responses to these errors wholly insufficient,? he said.\n\n?It is one thing to launch an inquiry into the editorial standards of the ABC and an entirely different thing to investigate how errors are investigated and dealt with.\n\n?It is factually incorrect to suggest that this inquiry is in any way a government dictating what content should air, because to make a complaint, that content has to already have aired.\n\n?And despite all of Ita’s bluster there is a key fact everyone is missing: the ABC itself is conducting an inquiry into its complaints system, this is at least a surface level admission that there are issues with the process.? ····· 111475249

Sky News host Nicholas Reece says the Coalition refusing to budge on Australia’s 2030 climate target creates a ?political conundrum? for the Labor Party. \n\nMr Reece said the ?never-ending climate wars? are set to continue as an agreement was made at the COP26 Summit for countries to meet again next year to debate stronger 2030 targets. \n\nHe also said ?predictably? Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce and the Nationals were ?quick out of the gate? to say they were not going to up Australia’s emissions reduction target for 2030 despite other countries being more ambitious. \n\n?The pressure is on for Australia to agree to more ambitious cuts – but the Coalition Government is not budging, and this creates a political conundrum for Labor,? Mr Reece said. \n\n?Having lost more than one election to a climate change fear campaign, Labor will be cautious. \n\n?The expectation is that Labor will not announce its 2030 target until after parliament rises for the year.? ····· 111475239
