Afghanistan: The Next Chapter | VPRO Documentary

für € kaufen ···· vpro documentary
This summer, U.S. troops withdrew after twenty years in Afghanistan. What was left was a mess. What humanitarian and geopolitical lessons can we learn?\n\nWith the Taliban's seizure of power, a new world order announced itself. An order in which the U.S. is no longer the international policeman, in which China claims its own role, and in which Europe must start to show its colors. Will there be anything left of human rights in the new world of 21st century 'Realpolitik'? Do we have to start negotiating with the Taliban? And what difficult choices will Europe have to make to stay afloat in the new geopolitical arena?\n\nTwenty years after Operation Enduring Freedom began, the United States decided this summer that it had gone on long enough. The mission, which was supposed to make Afghanistan a safe and free country, had failed. Al Qaida and the Taliban proved impossible to defeat, exporting democracy proved more difficult than hoped. The decades of effort by Western allies in the country, the 240,000 deaths, the 2,000 billion American dollars: it was all virtually in vain.\n\nVPRO Documentary looks at the shameful present, the difficult past and the uncertain future with former Commander of the Armed Forces 2005-2008 Dick Berlijn, Afghan women's rights activist Mahbouba Seraj, Jonathan Powell, (peace mediator and former Chief of Staff to Tony Blair from 1997-2007) and Kishore Mahbubani (former diplomat and UN ambassador to Singapore and author of 'Has China Won? Spain: no tourism, but lots of refugees | VPRO Documentary

A humanitarian crisis was unfolding in the Canary Islands at the time of the COVID19-pandemic. Thousands of refugees arrived per boat on the islands, which are not equipped for this. Or is there room for them now that there are almost no tourists? Stef Biemans visits a four-star hotel where African refugees have found a new home.\n\nIn this new series - a sequel to the award winning series 'Letters to Andalusia' he asks questions about the stories that dominated the Spanish news last year.\n\nHe saw how migrants arrived in the Canary Islands, how the Basque Country celebrated the anniversary of ETA laying down its weapons, how Madrid's hospitality industry interfered in local elections, how Galicians cried out for attention without raising their voices, and how bullfighters complained about lack of work due to the pandemic. \n\nVPRO Documentary publishes a new subtitled documentary weekly, investigating current affairs, finance, sustainability, climate change or politics. 10 years without the ETA | VPRO Documentary

für € kaufen ···· vpro documentary
Letters to the rest of Spain is a series about a divided country, in which Biemans tries to expose something of the Spanish soul through the handwritten letter. He writes his first letter to the Basque Country with the question: What influence does the Basque conflict still have on your life? With the term "Basque conflict" he actually means the violence of ETA, but the legacy of this terrorist organization is still so sensitive that he has to be very careful in his letters.\n\nThree years ago Stef Biemans came to live in Spain quite suddenly. To get to know his neighbors, he started asking them questions in letters he sent. Biemans learned a lot from the answers of the Andalusians, but above all it made him even more curious. Curious about all those other Spaniards.\n\nIn this new series - a sequel to the award winning series 'Letters to Andalusia' he asks questions about the stories that dominated the Spanish news last year.\n\nHe saw how migrants arrived in the Canary Islands, how the Basque Country celebrated the anniversary of ETA laying down its weapons, how Madrid's hospitality industry interfered in local elections, how Galicians cried out for attention without raising their voices, and how bullfighters complained about lack of work due to the pandemic. \n\nVPRO Documentary publishes a new subtitled documentary weekly, investigating current affairs, finance, sustainability, climate change or politics. Freezing Fertility | VPRO Documentary

für € kaufen ···· vpro documentary
People are having children at an increasingly older age, and sometimes that doesn't work out. The solution? Freeze your eggs young and 'manage' your fertility. How do we want to shape the future of childbearing?\n\nThe average age at which people have their first child (in the Netherlands) is around thirty. This age has been rising since the 1970s and with it the number of women who become infertile due to old age, but still want to have a child. Although there is a range of treatments available for 'wishful parents', the chances of success are often small. Specialists are therefore increasingly advising: start freezing your eggs young, so that you have a healthy supply for later. The motto seems to be: "a smart girl freezes on time".\n\nWe delve into the world of makeable fertility. We talk to fertility entrepreneurs, embryologists, IVF specialists and researchers. One saw fertility as a gap in the market and founded Spain's first egg bank. The other is concerned about the commercialization of fertility and is working on UK's first non-profit "fertility service. They have one thing in common: all are concerned with catching up with the human biological clock. \n\nIn the US, egg freezing parties are becoming more common. A kind of Tupperware party of the future, for ambitious people in their twenties and thirties who want to postpone their desire to have children. In the Netherlands, the 'Medisch Centrum Kinderwens' in Leiderdorp organizes fertility cafe's: evenings where people can ask all their questions about a freezing process in an informal setting.\n\nIn a society where certain certainties, such as a house, job or relationship, are taking longer and longer to arrive, freezing eggs is a solution for some people. But how do the costs of a freezing procedure - financially, emotionally and physically - compare with the chances of success? And: when do we lapse into 'everything-is-makeable-thinking'.\n\nOctober, 2021\nDirected by Maren Merckx\nResearch: Keshia Hederman\nProduction: Marie Schutgens\nEditing: Michiel Hazebroek\nFinal editing: Doke Romeijn and Geert Rozinga\n\nVPRO Documentary publishes a new subtitled documentary weekly, investigating current affairs, finance, sustainability, climate change or politics. How do plants arm themselves against drier and saltier soil? Questions that could be vital to humanity. Molecular plant physiologist Christa Testerink finds out.\n\nHow does a plant taste salt? Molecular plant physiologist Christa Testerink researches how plants develop under difficult conditions such as drought and salinization. Do plants have senses and can they feel? According to Norbert Peeters, people suffer en masse from 'plant blindness'. In the tropical IRRI institute in the Philippines, a new type of rice has been successfully developed through genetic modification, which can prevent malnutrition. Testerink also delves into the history of botany with original documents from Charles Darwin.\n\nPart of 'Big Questions', a series in which science journalist Rob van Hattum takes a journey through science with eight Dutch researchers who are at the top of their field. Safe haven in Lampedusa? | VPRO Documentary

für € kaufen ···· vpro documentary
We travel to the Italian island of Lampedusa, where the port authorities have set up a well-oiled machine to keep migrants out of sight of tourists at all costs. Immediately upon arrival at the port, they are transferred to a detention center and then onto quarantine ships, back out to sea. \n\nDuring aerial patrols over the sea it is filmed how all means are now being used to prevent migrants from reaching Europe. For example, the Libyan coast guard shoots with live ammunition to stop a boat with migrants. It is also filmed how a Dutch shipowner hands over a group of 170 migrants to the Libyan Coast Guard. This is a violation of international treaties, which require ships to take people to a safe haven.\n\nTo find out what happened to these migrants after this pushback, Bram Vermeulen travels to Sicily, to the port city of Genoa and Rotterdam. The decision of the Dutch shipowner turns out to have had fatal consequences. It also becomes clear that the responsibility for rescuing people has now shifted almost exclusively to commercial shipowners, now that aid organizations are hampered in every way possible to rescue people at sea. The regulations present shipowners with a devilish dilemma.VPRO Documentary publishes a new subtitled documentary weekly, investigating current affairs, finance, sustainability, climate change or politics. The power of the Yellow Vests | VPRO Documentary

Ironically the yellow vest was made mandatory by Nicholas Sarkozy, a president who has meant very little to the lower social classes. Every Frenchman with a car must have a yellow vest in the trunk for safety reasons. Now the yellow vests are making disgruntled French people visible.\n\nRevolutionary Amandine Vidal therefore thought Sarkozy was a visionary. For the rest, his legacy may go into the trash, of course. For the young Vidal, the yellow shirts have come to play an important role in her life. She has found special comrades in the movement. She especially admires the people who carry the movement. \n\nHer comrade Mélanie N'Goye Gaham, for example. N'Goye Gaham is the unofficial leader of the yellow shirts in Amiens. N'Goye Gaham will never forget that in one of the demonstrations she was knocked unconscious by ME officers and that her comrades patched her up again. \n\nN'Goye Gaham sees in the yellow shirts a first step towards a world where money isn't more important than people. A different future must be possible, according to her. Even if you have to fight to get it. \n\nAlthough the ferocity of the demonstrations is nowhere near what it was at the end of 2018, even now, in coronation times, the yellow hisses are demonstrating.\n\nSo, because of the difficult conditions, the yellow shirts have shrunk in numbers. But are they on the decline? Or will the invisible ones suddenly become visible again soon? Who will say? Because you don't plan a revolution. A revolution erupts. \n\nThis is an episode of 'In Europe, history caught in the act' with Geert Mak by Stefanie de Brouwer and Roel van Broekhoven. \n\nVPRO Documentary publishes a new subtitled documentary weekly, investigating current affairs, finance, sustainability, climate change or politics. Investing is popular. But the endless data streams we all generate have changed the dynamics of the stock market. Who benefits the most from this?\n\nThe stock market should be a level playing field: everyone has the same information. But unnoticed, terabytes of data have entered the stock market. Smart companies dive into the mountain of data that is collected about us, in order to be able to see Apple's sales or Netflix's number of subscribers before the rest of the market does. VPRO Documentary dives into the world of 'alternative data' to see who is winning on the stock market, and who is not.\n\nBecause of the corona crisis and the low interest rates on savings accounts, large groups of new private investors poured into the stock market in recent years. In the hope of higher returns, and sometimes as pure entertainment. \n\nWhereas previously investors had to wait for annual reports, analyst reports, quarterly figures and press releases published by companies, the use of infinite amounts of data from other sources is proving very lucrative for large investors. This 'alternative data' turns out to be a good way of predicting whether certain prices will go up or down.\n\nOriginal air date: September, 11 2021\n\nDirector: Martijn Kieft\nResearch: William de Bruijn\nProduction: Jeroen Beumer\nCamera: Jackó van 't Hof\nMontage: Michiel Hazebroek\nAnimation: Julia Veldman\nFinal editing: Doke Romeijn and Geert Rozinga\n\nVPRO Documentary publishes a new subtitled documentary weekly, investigating current affairs, finance, sustainability, climate change or politics. In this video, Bram Vermeulen and cameraman Sven Torfinn were the first international camera crew to enter the country since the violence escalated in northern Mozambique.\n\nThis is one of the most beautiful places in Africa. But in recent months, more than half a million Mozambicans have fled the villages in the coastal strip of the northern province of Cabo Delgado. An Islamic group, which has sworn allegiance to Islamic State, is using maximum terror to make the villagers flee. Vermeulen tries to find out why this group is doing this.\n\nTo find the answer to that question, he travels to one of the islands off the coast that is as beautiful as it is macabre. The island was once a transit port for Mozambicans who were enslaved by the colonial Portuguese. In this episode, Bram Vermeulen travels to the border of Greece with Turkey. There, a six-metre high wall is being built to stop migrants and refugees. Along the banks of the border river Evros, soldiers of the Greek army, police, and heat cameras are now active to keep a close watch on the border 24 hours a day. The Greeks have also formed a civil guard to act as the eyes and ears of the border police.\n\nAlthough the wall is not yet finished, migrants or refugees are nowhere to be seen in the villages of the border region. Is this because of the tightened surveillance, COVID, or is something else going on?\n\nMeanwhile, Greek residents complain about the emptying of the region. Young people have left for the big city or for other countries in Europe. Elderly farmers now drive tractors. An asparagus farmer is forced to turn to an employment agency in Athens, which sends migrants from West Africa to help him. They are the only Africans in the village.\n\nWhen Bram Vermeulen and his film crew make their last round along the border on the last day in the area, they come across a large group of Afghan refugees. They tell shocking stories that answer all the unanswered questions. When the Greek police catch sight of the Afghans, the film crew is taken to the police station.\n\nDirection, composition, presentation Bram Vermeulen\nCamera Sven van Enckevort\nSound Simone Galavazi\nFixer Vassilis Kyrakoulis\nMontage Paul Delput\nDesign Joost Gulien\nColour correction Gerhard van der Beek\nMusic Rutger Zuydervelt\nAudio Editing Rob Dul\nEditing Gijs Swantee, Sofoula Schalkwijk\nFinal editing Joyce Daamen\nProduction Dominiek Beltman, Regina Rijpkema\n\nVPRO Documentary publishes a new subtitled documentary weekly, investigating current affairs, finance, sustainability, climate change or politics. The hopelessness in certain parts of the country drives people to despair. But speaking out against the established order can still mean your death sentence in Iraq. Sakir goes in search of Saddam Hussein's hideout where he was captured by the Americans in 2003 and a beginning of a peaceful era should have begun. Then he travels through the old city of Mosul where he meets the stragglers among ruins of the war. They were those who witnessed The Battle of Mosul, perhaps the bloodiest and most devastating battle since the fall of Saddam Hussein. Sakir takes stock and shows what the fall of Hussein brought to the country. \n\nIn the five-part series 'The Ruins of Iraq', made in co-production with VICE Studios, Dutch-Palestinian filmmaker Sakir Khader (1990), accompanied by his friend and field producer Mohamed Rasool, travels for six months in the Iraq that we don't get to see in the news. The Future of Protest | VPRO Documentary

What is the future of protest when we are not only forced to keep our distance, but also subjected to increasingly intrusive and sophisticated surveillance systems online?\n\nSince the outbreak of the Covid-19 virus at various places in the world, we have been given a taste of protest in a one-half meter society: thousands of people in one square or field, well away from each other, each neatly contained within a circle drawn on the ground. Protesting has always been linked to physical proximity: 'shoulder-to-shoulder'.\n\nVPRO Documentary explores the future of protest with Micah White (leader of the Occupy movement), and John Jordan (anti-globalist). All have experience in how the big issues of our time, such as climate change, social inequality, racism and environmental issues, can be successfully addressed and influenced through activism.\n\nDirector Jan Beddegenoodts has been part of an international movement that connects 'rave' with protest for over a decade. Young people gather to dance and party. Worldwide, these parties are the breeding ground, overture and expression of social and political action. That was the case in Palestine, Berlin, Detroit, Sao Paulo, Belgrade and Tblisi. With his camera he was at most of these events to record how engagement was forged into a powerful and hopeful protest.\n\nDirected by Jos de Putter and Jan Beddegenoodts.\nResearch: Jan Beddegenoodts and Olaf Oudheusden\nCamera: Robert Monchen and Jan Beddegenoodts.\nProduction: Olivier Schuringa\nEditing: Jan Beddegenoodts\nFinal editing: Doke Romeijn and Geert Rozinga\n\nVPRO Documentary publishes a new subtitled documentary weekly, investigating current affairs, finance, sustainability, climate change or politics. Time Rebels | VPRO Documentary

für € kaufen ···· vpro documentary
The tyranny of time, of the now, obscures the view of what it is really about: the great problems of the future. According to Roman Krznaric, we need visions to tackle the climate crisis. He believes that young people should be given an immediate voice in today's political decisions.\n\n'How will the children of the future remember us?' With that question as his starting point, Australian-British philosopher and political scientist Roman Krznaric wrote his most recent book 'The Good Ancestor'. In the book he argues that future generations should be given a voice in today's political decisions. Something that, according to him, hardly ever happens at present, in a time characterized by pathological short-termism. But how do you become one, a good ancestor? \n\nHe already cautiously sees a fragmented movement emerging: the Time Rebels. People who are all fighting in their own way for a new economy that is focused on the long term. They give Krznaric hope, but it is not enough. As an expert on democratic governance, he envisions a "deeper" democracy that breaks free from pathological short-termism and makes generational thinking the standard. \n\nKrznaric has a six-step plan by which we learn to think like people building cathedrals, in order to save our future generations. For example, he proposes "Aldermen of the Future" to transform our politics into long-term systems. \n\nOriginal air date: February 22, 2021\n\nDirector: Tomas Kaan\nResearch: Soraya Pol\nProduction: Zoë de Wilde\nFinal editing: Geert Rozinga and Doke Romeijn\n\nVPRO Documentary publishes a new subtitled documentary weekly, investigating current affairs, finance, sustainability, climate change or politics. Until recently, religions had a monopoly on heaven. But religion has a new competitor: dataism. The belief that ultimately everything, including life itself, is nothing more than data.\n\nThe promise is a programmable paradise, where artificial intelligence can give us eternal life, happiness and beauty. \n\nWhat does dataism mean for the future of religion and spirituality? And can it offer us, in addition to numerous practical blessings, meaning? How can we stop overpopulation? (Sahara 3/3) | VPRO Documentary

Overpopulation is an issue in Niger. You are never alone in Niger. In no country in the world are as many children born as in Niger, on average more than seven per woman. But overpopulation is not easy to stop, also if demographers predict a catastrophe if the explosive population growth is not curbed. Why does nobody seem to succeed in turning the tide and stop the overpopulation?\n\nIn this series, Dutch Journalist Bram Vermeulen travels through the biggest desert on earth: the Sahara. He goes from west to east, from the Atlantic to the red sea and crosses the four biggest countries. He experiences the heat of the desert, the dangers of advancing jihadism and meets the residents of one of the most inhospitable areas on earth.\n\nDutch Journalist Bram Vermeulen is trying to investigate why many attempts by aid organizations to convince parents to have fewer children fail.\n\nIn this episode he also visits the desert city Agadez. The desert city was the departure point of travelers through the Sahara for centuries. But since Europe has blocked the routes to Libya and the Mediterranean Sea, Agadez is in a big crisis. Smugglers and nomads see livelihoods evaporating.\nThe panic in Europe about migration has had major consequences for Agadez. Under pressure from Brussels and with substantial payment, the Government of Niger has passed a law that now prohibits the transport of migrants to the border with Libya and Algeria.\n\nDutch Journalist Bram Vermeulen wants to know how the smugglers still manage to survive in the new situation. Agadez is now an angry city. That anger does not focus on Brussels, but on its own bureaucrats.\n\nPresentator: Bram Vermeulen\nDirector & Camera: Erik van Empel\nSound: Oleksiy Tugushin\nEdit: Daan Wierda\nResearch: Tjeerd Bijman\nResearch/Fixer: Issifou Djibo\nCamera assistant: Aboulougafar Adamou\nProduction: Elleke Claessen\nProduction assistants: Yalou van der Heijden\nJeroen Mondria\nMusic: Rutger Zuydervelt (Machinefabriek)\nOnline Editors: Nick Boers, Marleen Cuijpers\nCommissioning Editor: Hans Simonse\n\nDecember 2018\n\nVPRO Documentary publishes a new subtitled documentary weekly, investigating current affairs, finance, sustainability, climate change or politics. How Timbuktu became a dangerous city (Sahara 2/3) | VPRO Documentary

Timbuktu is an El Dorado for all travelers who dare to cross the Sahara. It's is a magical city full of libraries and perhaps the place where you find the best music from West Africa. But in 2012, Timbuktu was conquered by jihadists. The French army had to liberate the city. Can Timbuktu get alive again?\n\nIn this three-part series, Dutch Journalist Bram Vermeulen travels through the biggest desert on earth: the Sahara. He goes from west to east, from the Atlantic to the red sea and crosses the four biggest countries. He experiences the heat of the desert, the dangers of advancing jihadism and meets the residents of one of the most inhospitable areas on earth.\n\nCenturies ago, mythical stories were told about Timbuktu. The streets are said to be paved with gold. But many travelers who dared to travel to Timbuktu never came back.\nAt the end of the last century, Timbuktu was a popular holiday destination for the adventurous traveler. Until 2012. Then the city was conquered by an alliance of Tuareg separatists and jihadists Ansar Dine. They realized a dream that many Tuareg nomads have had for generations: their state, named Azawad.\nTimbuktu lived for nine months under the strict Sharia regime. Alcohol was strictly prohibited. Age-old tombs were destroyed. The French army had to liberate the city. But the city is still not safe.\n\nHowever, Dutch journalist Bram Vermeulen leaves for Timbuktu to ask whether the city can get alive again despite all the dangers. He meets the owner of the only bar in Timbuktu, a son from a mixed marriage between a Malian mother and a French soldier. That origin appears to have saved his life on the day the jihadists took over the city.\nEveryone in Timbuktu has two faces, just like the city itself. It´s a place of desert and river like the local journalist who had to make propaganda for the occupiers to stay alive. Or the young women who have been abused by the jihadists, but later come to celebrate and dance to a song that expresses the ideals of the occupiers.\n\nDecember 2018\n\nVPRO Documentary publishes a new subtitled documentary weekly, investigating current affairs, finance, sustainability, climate change or politics. Competing with our filter friendly ego's | VPRO Documentary

Being beautiful has many advantages: you do better in the relationship market, in finding a job, a house and a network. But who decides what is beautiful? And how do you compete with your idealised, digital self?\n\nOnline, we filter our selfies en masse to look better, but injecting 'real' lips and buttocks is also taking off. Being beautiful has never been more important, because beauty pays! Whoever meets the dominant ideal of beauty has many advantages, not only in the relationship market but also in finding a job, a house and a network. But who decides what is beautiful? And how do you become beautiful according to the prevailing standard?\n\nIn fashion and advertising, there is now a trend towards more variety and colour. And on social media, too, there is room for body positivity and pluss-sized models. But is that really the whole story? According to fashion activist Janice Deul, it is often just window dressing and symbol politics, and the ideal of young, thin and white remains firmly in place. Research also shows that beauty standards worldwide have become more similar.\n\nThe influence of social media and the growth of the service economy have made appearance even more important. People are investing more than ever in beauty. In her book Perfect Me, philosopher Heather Widdows points out that the extent to which we submit to the dominant ideal of beauty is also changing: for many men and women, the demand to be beautiful is becoming a driving force in their lives, a 'moral imperative' that you can no longer escape. What will the beauty ideal of the future look like? Are we moving toward a world without truth? With the rise of social media, information bubbles and the possibilities of Deepfakes, we no longer live in a shared reality. How to proceed?\n\nWe are living in an "infocalypse", says British disinformation expert Nina Schick. In her book "Deepfakes and the Infocalypse - What You Urgently Need to Know", she outlines a society overwhelmed by too much information, where it is no longer possible to distinguish between "information" and "disinformation".\n\nWith the advent of social media, various groups in our society tend to retreat more and more into their own 'echo chambers.' In these they experience their own 'subjective truth.' This makes it increasingly difficult to reach a consensus on how the "real" world should be seen. \n\nA new effective and influential step in the spread of dis- and misinformation is the rise of synthetic media.\n\nThe following speakers will appear in this episode: \nNina Schick, Writer and Consultant\nYori Ettema, Product designer Deep Memory\nDavid van den Berg, Clinical psychologist\nHenry Ajder, Philosopher\nStephanie Lepp, Artist\n\nOriginal title: VPRO Tegenlicht: Zien is geloven\nAired on March 7, 2021\n\nDirected by Shuchen Tan\nResearch: Soraya Pol\nProduction: Jeroen Beumer\nEditing: Christien Houbier\nFinal editing: Doke Romeijn and Geert Rozinga\nOnline editors: Daan Kuys and Julia Veldman\n\nVPRO Documentary publishes a new subtitled documentary weekly, investigating current affairs, finance, sustainability, climate change or politics. In the Netherlands, 200,000 young people are worried about the demise of the world and the major climate disasters they might experience. They learn from Greta Thunberg that the world will end if we continue like this. Climate depression and eco-anxiety have recently become official diagnoses. There is a strong feeling among these teens and the 20-somethings of today that they need to clean up the mess for the generations before them. \n\nIn this short documentary we see three young people who turn their climate concerns into action. How far will they go and how lonely is their struggle?\n\nRobin (26 years old, who/when) is one of the initiators of action group Extinction Rebellion and fights for a just and clean fashion industry. Robin goes bare-breasted in the window of a fashion store where they glue themselves to the store window, to draw attention to greenwashing of the fast fashion chain.\n \nMelih (16 years old, he/he) lives in two worlds. On the one hand, the world of his Turkish parents, his father is a climate denier and with his mother he has to eat meat, and his friends in Amstelveen. On the other hand, the world of Fridays for Future. With his friends at this platform for students he goes to strikes and meetings. Together they organize climate actions. \n \nLike his father and brother, Armando (21 years old, he/he) went to study technical business administration, but quickly saw that the 'business way' is not the solution to the climate problem. How did Brexit happen? | VPRO Documentary

Britain will permanently leave the EU on January 1 2021, four years after the disputed referendum. It is only now that many Brexit voters are discovering that they have been abused for the political elite's power games. The campaign team of the advocates of brexit won the referendum with loud and clear lies and a cunning use of algorithms. Brexit is not going to bring the supporters what they hoped for, quite the contrary. But, as always, repentance comes too late. With: James Graham, he wrote 'Brexit: The Uncivil War'. And the 'ordinary' Brit will speak, including cook Guy Matthews.\n\nOn VPRO broadcast you will find nonfiction videos with English subtitles, French subtitles and Spanish subtitles, such as documentaries, short interviews and documentary series. \n \nThis channel offers some of the best travel series from the Dutch broadcaster VPRO. How in Taiwan spirituality and modern life goes together | VPRO Documentary

After a burnout due to stress, Dutch director Sunny Bergman decided to investigate how people deal with spiritual strain and depression in countries that seem less affected by it.\n\nHow does in Taiwan spirituality and modern life go together? Are people in Taiwan more into spirituality or are is there modern life more embracing it? Is Taiwan a place where spirituality is part of culture and therefore also their modern life? In this documentary we visit Taiwan and experience modern life and spirituality. \n\nEpisode 2/3 – Taiwan\n\nTaiwan is just as densely populated as The Netherlands and the pressure people experience at their jobs is very high. The country has a very strong spiritual tradition from taoism to buddhism. They do not visit a doctor only when they are sick, but also to stay healthy. Sunny Bergman is curious how the Taiwanese handle complaints like burn-outs and stress, since she experienced it herself. She visits a brain centre, where the effects of meditation on the stress levels are being researched.\n\nDoes spirituality contribute to our mental health? Four out of ten people in the Netherlands suffer from depression, insomnia, ADHD and stress. Sunny Bergman studied how people in Ghana, Taiwan and Brazil deal with these psychological symptoms, in an often spiritual way. These 3 countries are just as modern as western countries, but there, traditional rituals are treated as powerful medicine. Does that approach work? And what is a normal mental condition anyway? There is hardly any country in the world that spends so much money on mental health care as the Netherlands. Where do all these mental problems come from? Are they diseases arising from abundance?\nOn VPRO broadcast you will find nonfiction videos with English subtitles, French subtitles and Spanish subtitles, such as documentaries, short interviews and documentary series. \n \nThis channel offers some of the best travel series from the Dutch broadcaster VPRO. Is depression something that is discussed in Ghana? Is there even a word for depression or are people in Ghana avoiding the down sides of life? In the western world depression is more and more common but how are people in Ghana thinking about our way of facing depression?\n\nEpisode 1/3 – Ghana\n\nMany Ghanaians do not know what depression is, and they certainly have no idea of what loneliness is. They live, work, sleep and eat together. If a member of the group gets depressed, it becomes a problem for the whole community, and they must find a solution together. Sunny experiences with the family of a friend that taking care of each other is also taking care of yourself in a way.\n\nDoes spirituality contribute to our mental health? The classic business structure, where a company aims to maximize its profits for their shareholders, is under fire. Can they bring out the best in people while maintaining profits?\n \nShareholder capitalism - the business model focused on short term profits and shareholder value maximization – is under increasingly scrutiny in recent years. Genoa: City of migrants | VPRO Documentary

für € kaufen ···· vpro documentary
Genoa is a haven city in Italy. In Genoa, tens of thousands of African migrants arrive, and the city and its inhabitants are overwhelmed by this flood of men. Administratively, the migrants are stuck in Genoa, and the locals have to live with the migrants, the criminality, and the shift in Genoa's culture, highly visible in the emblematic street Via di Pré.\n\nIn this VPRO travel series Via Genoa, writer Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer speaks with the colorful inhabitants of his hometown, the Italian port city of Genoa. Pfeijffer shows how Italy changes politically, socially and economically with all the newcomers.\n\nIn this first episode Ilja identifies the problems: in the neighborhood, many unemployed African migrants live, and many migrants do not have a residence permit. To have a residence permit they need an employment contract. But there are no jobs for migrants. For this reason, via di Prè became a criminal street, where you avoid eye contact and keep on walking. Even locals do not want to go on Via di Pré anymore.\n\nThe new police boss, Sergia Bracco, increased the number of patrols in central Genoa. The reason for this was the neighborhood residents and shopkeepers complaining, the terrorist attacks in other European cities and the various fake bombings in the city. Regular military and police patrols roam the city.\n\nEvery day, new Africans arrive in Genoa looking for work that doesn't seem to be real. At present, these are mostly young men from West Africa. In Lampedusa and the reception centers in Sicily they are divided among the Italian municipalities. Genoa currently has over 3000 registered asylum seekers. In the last month of December, tens of thousands came up daily. During the winter season, there are fewer arrivals on the southern Italian coasts, but the prospects are that 2017 will be another record year.\n\nThis shows how Italy has changed on the wings of migration over recent decades. Italians traded their salami, cheeses and vegetables and fruits for Senegalese seafood restaurants, Nigerian barbers and Moroccan kebab stores. During the nightly hours, the Italians in this part of the city can be counted on one hand.\n\nDirector: Hans Pool\nPresented by: Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer\nJanuary 2017\n\nOn VPRO broadcast you will find nonfiction videos with English subtitles, French subtitles and Spanish subtitles, such as documentaries, short interviews and documentary series. \n \nThis channel offers some of the best travel series from the Dutch broadcaster VPRO. This interview was not conducted to be a stand-alone interview, it was conducted for a Dutch documentary about male/female-dynamics in Canada. Within this documentary, we explored how an event like the Toronto van attack could happen in Canada and how Canadians are trying to heal from it. More broadly, we looked at misogyny and violence against women within Canada, and what it is about contemporary feminism that makes some men angry or lost. We also paid attention to men suffering from violence that their female partners had inflicted upon them. As prominent Canadian voices, we included both Margaret Atwood and Jordan Peterson.\n\nPsychology professor Jordan Peterson has become a controversial figure ever since speaking out against Bill C-16 (2016), a law which adds gender expression and gender identity to the Canadian Human Rights Act. He has received both praise and criticism after the publication of his self-help book 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos (2018). His fans are thankful for the advice he’s given them to take responsibility for their lives, his critics argue that his emphasis on the danger posed by ‘postmodern neo-marxists’ is dangerous in itself. He has been accused of being anti-feminist and feeding into the alt-right. While he gained support among people who do identify with the alt-right, he himself does not. \n\nPeterson has become an important inspiration for various men’s groups, an influential voice. Therefore, we wanted to get clear where he stands on contemporary feminism and how he interprets the van attack, which took place in the city he lives in. Since the documentary episode only allowed for brief passages from the interview, while Peterson’s answers are extensive, we decided to provide the entire interview.\n\nWe talked to Peterson on the 4th of June 2019, in Toronto, Ontario. Since there were some breaks (for adjusting the camera and for having coffee) during the interview, it consists of multiple takes. Apart from leaving out the breaks themselves and making the transition between breaks more fluent, no further editing has been done. \n\nThe documentary about the Toronto van attack and male-female dynamics in Canada is available here: https://youtu.be/KTsPUBBY5pI\n\npresented by Emy Koopman\ndirected & filmed by Hans Pool\nsound recording Pepijn Aben\nediting Jouke Dubel\nresearch Sasha Ourikh\nlocal research Margot Minjon-Grant\ngrading Gerhard van der Beek\naudio post-production Pepijn Aben, Mark Meewis\nmusic Ocobar\nproduction assistant Jeroen Mondria, Anna Schuitema, Margo de Roos\nsubtitling Daniel Naamani\nweb editor Evelien de Vries\nmarketing & communication Wieneke Mulder\nproducer Elleke Claessen, Nicole Frints, Nicoline Tania\ncommissioning editor Hans Simonse\n\nOn VPRO broadcast you will find nonfiction videos with English subtitles, French subtitles and Spanish subtitles, such as documentaries, short interviews and documentary series.\n\nThis channel offers some of the best travel series from the Dutch broadcaster VPRO. In her early childhood, Marcelline lost her mother and father. But the glacier had kept their bodies all this time.\n\nMarcelline Udry-Dumoulin was only a toddler when her parents went missing on a trip through the mountains in 1942. Probably they were attacked by storms, or sank into a snow-covered crevice in the glacier. \n\nDuring the extreme summer of 2003, a new phenomenon occurred: the glaciers high up in the Swiss mountains began to melt. Never before had the eternal snow melted to such heights, literally bringing a piece of the past to the surface. Including the bodies of missing mountain hikers. The thaw continued after that. 75 years after they went missing, the bodies of Marcelline's parents appeared and she was able to bury them.\n\nThe VPRO is touring Europe and European history. The series 'In Europe, History caught in the act' picks up the thread where the previous one ended: in 1999. Optimism at the turn of the century gave way to fear and confusion following the attacks on the Twin Towers, the credit crisis, an increasing flow of refugees, and an increasingly troubled relationship with Russia. Italy is on the front line of migration, and the street scene is changing with every new flow of refugees coming to Italy, searching for a new life. How do the Italians cope with the flow of refugees? And specifically with Muslim refugees? How is it to be a Muslim refugee in Italy? How do the refugees cope with the Italians?\n\nIn this second episode of the VPRO travel series Via Genua, Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer speaks to Rosella, a transgender prostitute who is confronted with a mosque next to her house.\n\nIlja is looking for Kumuna, the minor asylum seeker from Gambia whom he met in the first episode. Kumuna is now going to school. One of the first words he learns there is: Casa. Italian for 'home'. What is "Home" in Via di Prè? How do you master such a street as Via di Pré and how do you deal with it, if, what you consider your home changes with the arrival of migrants?\n\nIt is the day of the Festival of Sacrifice (Aïd el-Kebir). In the Via di Prè the men have put on their most beautiful religious clothing in all colors of the world. The women are at home and prepare the lamb. On the street, Ilja speaks to various Muslims. They tell him that unfortunately they are not allowed to slaughter lamb at home because of the Italian legislation and so they buy it at the Islamic butcher shops in Via di Prè.\n\nIlja is invited by a Senegalese family living in Via di Prè. The son of the house tells how he hears Italians on the street complaining about the crisis. Senegalese do that differently, he claims. "No one has to complain here. We always help each other. That is a bit of a different way of living than people outside the Senegalese community are used to.'\n\nDirector: Hans Pool\nPresented by: Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer\nJanuary 2017\n\nOn VPRO broadcast you will find nonfiction videos with English subtitles, French subtitles and Spanish subtitles, such as documentaries, short interviews and documentary series. \n\n This channel offers some of the best travel series from the Dutch broadcaster VPRO. Farmer Jerome Laronze wanted to work in an animal-friendly and small-scale manner, but that brought him into conflict with authority. Now he is dead.\n\nJérôme Laronze was convinced: if you want to save the environment, you have to go back to traditional farming methods. He was emphatically against intensive livestock farming and chose his own path: animal-friendly and small-scale.\n\nHis opposition to vaccinations, antibiotics and other European regulations brought him into conflict with authority. His farm was in danger of being evacuated, his cows taken away.\n\nThen, on a Saturday in 2017, Jerome was killed in his car by three bullets from a gendarme. In Canada, indigenous women are six times more likely to die violently than white women. The Highway of Tears is an endless road in the province of British Columbia, where women and girls have disappeared since the 1970s, at least 19, but unofficially estimated at over 40. Most of them belonged to the indigenous population. They do not stand alone but are said to be the result of more than a hundred years of colonial policy, whereby indigenous children were snatched from their families to be placed in boarding schools.\n\nBoarding schools that had to destroy 'the Indian in the child', but in many cases irreparably damaged the child itself. Dore van Duivenbode delves into the modern debate on abortion in Poland. A discussion with strong supporters and opponents. The reality is: abortion is forbidden with three exceptions to the rule.\n\nWhen you become pregnant by incest or rape, when your own life is in danger or when the fetus is deformed, Poland offers the possibility of abortion. Otherwise, you will have to travel to a country where this is legal or to have a child you would rather not have had. In the 1960s and 1970s it was the other way round. At that time, women from other countries came to Poland precisely because it was possible there on request. Why has that changed?\n\nPart of a tv-series called ' Moja Polska' ('My Poland') made in 2019 by Dore van Duivenbode and Britta Hosman.\n\nhttp://www.vpro.nl/mojapolska\n\nOn VPRO broadcast you will find nonfiction videos with English subtitles, French subtitles and Spanish subtitles, such as documentaries, short interviews and documentary series. \n \nThis channel offers some of the best travel series from the Dutch broadcaster VPRO. Pete's parents have certain expectations, but the Dutch dating market has different standards altogether. No matter how Dutch a banana like Pete feels, he always has to think of how he is seen or perceived. Pete looks Chinese, which isn't always considered attractive. So how do you navigate an ocean of potential dates when you don't meet today's standards yourself? And how do other "bananas" deal with that?\n\nIn the three-part docu-series Pete and the Bananas, journalist Pete Wu explores the most beautiful thing there is: love. But there are other dating rules for "bananas" as they are caught between two conflicting cultures. Pete calls himself a banana: Chinese on the outside ("yellow") and Dutch on the inside ("white"). Pete is investigating in this series: what is dating like for him? How do other "bananas" experience this? A series about love and dating between two worlds.\n\nPart 2 of 3.\n\nOn VPRO broadcast you will find nonfiction videos with English subtitles, French subtitles and Spanish subtitles, such as documentaries, short interviews and documentary series. \n \nThis channel offers some of the best travel series from the Dutch broadcaster VPRO.
