The significant effect of psychological and psychosocial factors on the chronicity of pain has been proved in numerous empirical studies and although stress has been investigated for some time as one of the most important psychosocial factors of chronic orofacial pain, there are hardly any studies that examine the underlying mechanisms of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. For this reason we conducted two studies at the interdisciplinary orofacial pain consultant service at the Center for Dental and Oral Medicine and Craniomaxillofacial Surgery of the University of Zurich. The first study investigated a possible dysregulation of the HPA axis by means of the ôlow-dose dexamethasone testö. Twenty patients (17 females, 3 males) with chronic myogenous facial pain were dentally examined according to the criteria for RDC/TMD. Further, each underwent a personal interview and completed a series of questionnaires (DIAX, HADS-D, Fatigue Scale, VAS Scales of pain intensity and quality of sleep). The control group comprised 20 healthy subjects, matched by gender, age and BMI. Salivary cortisol was measured on two consecutive days (awakening and daytime profile). 0,5 mg of dexamethasone was administered on the first evening. Results: in comparison to controls, chronic myogenous facial pain patients showed enhanced and prolonged suppression of cortisol following the administration of 0,5 mg of dexamethasone. Unstimulated cortisol response to awakening and daytime cortisol levels did not differ between the groups. Dysregulation in terms of enhanced negative feedback suppression exists in chronic myogenous facial pain. The second study investigated the predictive value of illness beliefs on therapy outcome in patients with chronic orofacial pain, as measured by the SRM. Relations could be found between subjective illness beliefs and physical as well as psychological adjustment in various chronic illnesses. No research is available to date with regard to chronic orofacial pain. 152 consecutive patients referred to the interdisciplinary orofacial pain consultant service at the Center for Dental and Oral Medicine and Cranio-maxillofacial Surgery, University of Zurich received questionnaires to assess pain and pain related disability, anxiety, depression as well as physical and mental quality of life at three time points: prior to treatment, three and six months after beginning of treatment. Results: Significant improvement over time was found for all outcome measures except mental quality of life. Results of the regression analysis indicated that believing pain could have serious consequences on oneÆs life (IPQ subscale consequences) is one of the most important predictors for treatment outcome regarding pain as well as mood in patients with chronic orofacial pain. The belief in low personal control and in a chronic timeline are shown to be predictive for outcome as well, explaining however a smaller proportion of variance. These results provided evidence that even when controlled for pain and mood, beliefs about pain are important predictors for treatment outcome and need to be considered in in the management of patients with chronic orofacial pain. Asking patients about their view of illness can provide essential information about these important predictors. Taken together both studies are in line with a multifactorial etiology of chronic facial pain, shifting the perspective away from a local towards a more central etiology with dysregulations in the stress and pain modulating system and pain related beliefs as important psychological determinants of adjustment to chronic pain. ····· 10361169953

Geräusche scheinen Babys zu helfen, die Strukturen von Handlungen zu extrahieren und Zielgerichtetheit zu erkennen. Die vorliegende Dissertation untersuchte daher den Einfluss von Handlungseffekten auf die Handlungswahrnehmung und -steuerung von Babys am Ende des ersten Lebensjahres. Dabei wurde gezeigt, dass 12-Monatige sowohl bei der Beobachtung der Handlungen eines Live- als auch TV-Modells die relevanten Informationen erfassen und diese für eigene Handlungen verwenden. Zudem wurde nachgewiesen, dass bereits Babys im Alter von 9 Monaten in der Lage sind, verschiedene Handlungen mit Objekten und die dadurch ausgelösten Effekte (Geräusche) miteinander in Beziehung zu setzen, wenn sie eine handelnde Person beobachten, und sie entsprechend eine Veränderung dieser Handlungs-Effekt-Kontingenzen bemerken. Chr. erweitert, die den dann kulturbestimmenden patriarchalen Kulturen vorangehen. Dies ermöglicht im Rahmen der kritischen Patriarchatsforschung auch eine Kritik der Schattenseiten dieser kulturellen Neuorientierung. Eine besondere Dynamik in der individuellen und kollektiven Entwicklung entsteht nun daraus, dass die biografisch ursprünglichsten vorsprachlichen Erfahrungen vor, während und nach der Geburt infolge der `physiologischen Frühgeburtlichkeit` des Menschen lebenslang in einer Art Hintergrundsfilm virulent bleiben und als Kern des Unbewussten magische und mythische Erlebensweisen prägen, die sowohl das Erleben des Kindes wie auch die Mentalitäten der frühen Menschheitskulturen bestimmen, wie auch bis heute im gesellschaftlichen Leben in verdeckter Form wirksam sind. Dies ist das Forschungsgebiet der Pränatalen Psychologie, die eine bedeutsame Ergänzung zu der in der nachgeburtlichen Zeit ansetzenden Entwicklungspsychologie darstellt. Die kollektivpsychologische Bedeutung dieser Zusammenhänge ist bisher nur ansatzweise erschlossen. Numerical hysteresis models are combined with the Finite Integration Technique applied for the discretization of the model geometry.Ferromagnetic hysteresis is a phenomenon where the magnetic flux density is not only determined by the instantaneous excitation, but also from the hysteresis history. Hence, the relationship between the magnetic flux density and the magnetic field strength can not be reduced to a time-independent material characteristic. As mathematical models for representing hysteresis, the Preisach model and the Jiles-Atherton model are used. The Preisach model is based on the assumption that any hysteresis can be expressed as a sum of elementary hysteresis loops. The distribution function of the elementary hysteresis is determined from a set of measured first-order transition curves. A two-step interpolation on the measurement data is applied. The Jiles-Atherton model is described by a first-order ordinary differential equation which depends on five parameters of the Jiles-Atherton model. These parameters are determined from the experimental data. Both models can be evaluated for arbitrary input values.The hysteresis model are combined with the Finite Integration Technique yielding two possible nonlinear magnetoquasistatic formulations: the magnetic polarization update scheme and the magnetic reluctivity nonlinear update scheme. Using the magnetic polarization update scheme, only a magnetization term at the right hand side of the algebraic system of equations has to be updated between two successive nonlinear steps. In the magnetic reluctivity nonlinear update scheme, the reluctivity at the left hand side of the algebraic system of equations has to be updated. For the latter case, the system has to be linearized, which is here based on the Newton-Raphson method or the successive approximation technique, equipped with a relaxation strategy.Compared with the magnetic polarization update scheme, the magnetic reluctivity nonlinear update scheme linearized by the Newton-Raphson method converges substantivally faster. Its convergence is, however, only guaranteed in the vicinity of the solution. On the other hand, the magnetic polarization update scheme is very robust. In order to combine the advantages of the both update scheme, a new hybrid Newton-Polarization method is introduced within the magnetoqusistatic models. A vector hysteresis model as an extension of the hysteresis models is also with the Finite Integration Technique, in order to numerically simulate hysteresis phenomena in models parts submitted to rotational flux.The above mentioned algorithms are tested using the TEAM Benchmark Problem 32. The first and foremost aim of the present work was to combine two lines of research on semantic memory. Originally, the first line comes from lesion patients and was then further explored with healthy subjects, that is the distinction of natural and artifactual categories. The second line of research comes from cognitive psychology. Here, a paradigm is frequently used to investigate the structure of and processes in semantic memory, that is the semantic priming paradigm. In the present work, this paradigm was used and natural versus artifactual categories were tested. Interestingly, an interaction with participants¿ sex was found. Females showed strong positive priming effects (i.e., faster reactions to a second target-word preceded by a related first word compared to an unrelated first word) for natural categories but no or even reversed priming effects for artifactual categories. In contrast, males showed approximately equal sized positive priming effects for natural and for artifactual categories. This finding was further investigated using common techniques from (neuro-)psychology. First, a lateralized presentation of stimuli was used to explore the involvement of both hemispheres. Second, event-related potentials of the initial finding were analyzed. The results of these experiments were evidence that females and males can use the same underlying neurophysiological processes and that the sexes do not differ in their fixed underlying representations of natural and artifactual categories. Further experiments were conducted which induced a specific focus on perceptual or functional features of objects in general. These experiments showed that females and males most probably differ in their preferred processing modes but that females and males are able to use both processing modes. Furthermore, the experiments showed that semantic priming effects can be experimentally manipulated and hinge on an overlap of category relevant features. In turn, this overlap can be changed by the current top-down focus of a person which is either habitually set or experimentally induced. ····· 10361170026

La intención del presente estudio fue el determinar y conocer la prevalencia de dientes incluidos en una muestra heterogénea de individuos en su mayoría domiciliados en Quito. Se analizaron 200 pacientes que acudieron durante el segundo semestre del 2009 al Dispensario Central IESS Quito que recibieron la indicación de tratamiento quirúrgico y que contaban con radiografía panorámica. De este grupo se observó un mayor porcentaje de pacientes de sexo femenino y se los distribuyó según edad en ocho grupos. Con respecto a las inclusiones dentarias se observó que la prevalencia se presento en mujeres con una probabilidad de 4.8 % de tener diente incluido, mientras que los hombres un 3.8%. Se pudo observar que a mayor edad, es menor la probabilidad de encontrar un diente incluido, esto se debe aparentemente a que estas piezas dentarias pudieron haber sido extraídas ya sea porque presentaron síntomas o por razones profilácticas. También se ha notado claramente que la probabilidad de tener un diente incluido mandibular es mayor a la probabilidad de tener uno maxilar. ····· 1036123516

Los silos fueron abiertos a los 70 días, asumiendo que la estabilización del proceso estaría completada. Se encontró que es factible ensilar el alga Gracilaria chilensis. Al analizar las diferencias entre los proximales del alga fresca y los tratamientos se encontró que éstas fueron significativas ( 0,05) para todos los casos, excepto para el extracto etéreo. Die große Anzahl an Trauerratgebern, meist auf Glaubensgrundsätzen oder individuellen Erfahrungsberichten beruhend, macht das gesellschaftliche Bedürfnis nach Verständnis und Hilfen bei der Trauerbewältigung deutlich, suggeriert jedoch einen fortgeschrittenen Forschungsstand, der faktisch nicht besteht. Empirische Daten fehlen weitgehend. In Deutschland ist bisher wenig Trauerforschung zu verzeichnen, aber auch auf internationaler Ebene fehlen aussagekräftige Daten innerhalb des ersten Jahres der Trauer. Mit dieser Studie wurde das in der Forschung bestehende Vermeidungsverhalten, Betroffene schon früh nach dem Tod des Ehepartners wissenschaftlich zu befragen, überwunden. Auch bestand bisher in der Trauerforschung eine weitreichende Theorienarmut, indem Daten ohne Bezug zu bestehenden Persönlichkeits- und Stressmodellen erfasst wurden. Es wurde somit bisher versäumt, bestehende psychologische Theorien für das Thema Trauer nutzbar zu machen. Über die Auswertung von Todesanzeigen konnten 66 Teilnehmer für eine Längsschnittstudie gewonnen werden. Die Teilnehmer wurden über Fragebogen zu den drei Messzeitpunkten drei Monate, sechs Monate und neun Monate nach dem Tod des Lebenspartners befragt. Auf der Grundlage der Set-Point-Theorie des Glücks, der Persönlichkeitsmodelle des Optimismus nach Carver und Scheier und der Handlungsorientierung nach Kuhl sowie nach den Stressmodellen von Lazarus und dem Ressourcen-Konservierungs-Modell von Hobfoll wurden Hypothesen zur Gestalt des Trauerverlaufs generiert und entsprechende Variablen in die Befragung aufgenommen. Neben soziodemographischen Daten wurden Persönlichkeitsvariablen, Ressourcenvariablen sowie Bewältigungsstrategien erfasst. Als abhängige Variablen wurden die depressive und psychosomatische Symptomatik und die allgemeine Lebenszufriedenheit in die Studie aufgenommen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass der Trauerverlauf primär durch eine Veränderung depressiver Symptome und nicht durch eine Veränderung psychosomatischer Symptome oder der allgemeinen Lebenszufriedenheit gekennzeichnet ist. Innerhalb des ersten halben Jahres nach dem Todesereignis ist eine deutliche Besserung der depressiven Symptome bei den Hinterbliebenen messbar. Das hervorstechendste Ergebnis ist, dass die Akzeptanz den zentralen Faktor erfolgreicher Trauerbewältigung darstellt. Die Akzeptanz hängt nicht nur mit den abhängigen Variablen zusammen, sondern ist auch ein signifikanter Prädiktor zur Vorhersage der Veränderungen depressiver und psychosomatischer Symptome sowie der allgemeinen Lebenszufriedenheit. Zwar hängt auch eine positive Neubewertung mit geringeren Symptomen zusammen, jedoch hängt dieser Zusammenhang von der Akzeptanz ab. Eine ausgeprägte Aufmerksamkeitsfokussierung auf Gefühle und Ausdruck von Gefühlen kennzeichnet eine stärkere Trauerreaktion. Handlungsorientierte Bewältigungsstrategien zeigten sich im Gegensatz zu emotionszentrierten Bewältigungsstrategien im Trauerverlauf nicht wirksam. Optimisten zeigen sich bei Verlust des Partners weniger belastet als Pessimisten, aber auch die Überlegenheit der Optimisten gegenüber den Pessimisten wird vor allem durch die Fähigkeit zur Akzeptanz vermittelt. Der Verlust finanzieller Ressourcen stellt für Hinterbliebene, insbesondere für Frauen, einen bedeutsamen weiteren Belastungsfaktor dar, der bei dem Tod des Ehepartners zusätzlich auftritt. Auch wenn die Teilnehmer nach dem Tod des Partners eine gesteigerte soziale Unterstützung erlebten, konnte jedoch nicht wie erwartet eine positive Wirkung einer gesteigerten sozialen Unterstützung auf den Trauerverlauf ausgemacht werden. Gründe hierzu wurden diskutiert. Insgesamt erwiesen sich die angewandten psychologischen Modelle zum Verständnis des Trauerverlaufs als hilfreich. Insbesondere die aus dem Persönlichkeitsmodell des Optimismus nach Carver und Scheier und die aus dem Stressmodell von Lazarus generierten Annahmen ließen sich auf die Gestalt des Trauerverlaufs übertragen. Aus den Ergebnissen dieser Studie konnten Hinweise zur Prävention besonderer Belastungen bei dem Tod des Lebenspartners gewonnen werden. Ebenso konnten Aspekte ausgemacht werden, die die Unterscheidung einer klinisch bedeutsamen Depression von einer normalen Trauerreaktion erleichtern können. Des Weiteren hat die Arbeit aufzeigen können, welche Schwerpunkte bei der Intervention anhaltend schwerer Trauerreaktionen gelegt werden sollten. Forscher arbeiten schon daran, eine pathologische Trauerreaktion zu identifizieren, was langfristig dazu führen kann, dass eine pathologische Trauer in die Klassifikation psychischer Störungen aufgenommen wird. Wichtig ist jedoch zunächst, eine normale Trauerreaktion zu verstehen, um eine pathologische Trauer von einer normalen Trauer unterscheiden zu können. In this study, we performed a QTL analysis of rice cooking and eating quality using a recombinant inbred line derived from a cross between Minghui 63 (MH63), the Chinese best male sterility restorer in the hybrid rice programs, and Kkao Dawk Mali105 (KDML 105), the Thai jasmine rice, known as the best quality rice. The traits analyzed include amylose content (AC), gel consistency (GC), alkali spreading value (ASV), and 13 parameters from the viscosity profile. Comparison of the QTL identified revealed 11 QTL clusters for these traits that are distributed on six chromosomes. The QTL for the traits in same class often clustered into same chromosomal regions. A total of 29 distinct QTLs were identified for 16 traits (or parameters) in the two years at P=0.01 level. Our results clearly showed that the QTL corresponding to the Wx locus simultaneously controlled most of viscosity parameters, but had no effect on AC, GC, ASV, V95, Btime, Atime, Atemp, Btemp and CPV.
