In der heutigen Zeit kommen in vielen Bereichen vermehrt nanoskalige Leuchtstoffe zum Einsatz, wenn diese mit herkömmlichen Bulkleuchtstoffen nicht zugänglich sind. Um jedoch technisch relevant zu sein, müssen Nanoleuchtstoffe auch durch Anregungs- und Emissionsspektren charakterisiert werden, eine geeignete Materialstabilität aufweisen und reproduzierbar synthetisiert werden können. Darüber hinaus sollten sie mit einer hohen Quantenausbeute das technische Gütekriterium für Leuchtstoffe erfüllen. Bei der Herstellung von Nanopartikeln ergeben sich folglich besondere Herausforderungen. Es müssen Synthesestrategien entwickelt werden, die einerseits die Kontrolle der Partikelgröße zulassen und bei geeigneter Temperatur betrieben werden können, die andererseits aber auch Defekte und Oberflächenterminierungen minimieren. In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden für die Leuchtstoffe Zn2SiO4:Mn, CaWO4 und ZnWO4 geeignete Synthesestrategien entworfen. Dies beinhaltet Synthesen in inversen Mikroemulsionen sowie Verfahren, die mikrowellenunterstützt in Ionischen Flüssigkeiten durchgeführt werden. Die Leuchtstoffe werden mittels Pulverdiffraktometrie, IR- und UV-Vis-Spektroskopie, Rasterelektronenmikroskopie und Dynamischer Lichtstreuung charakterisiert. Darüber hinaus werden ihre Lumineszenzeigenschaften fluoreszenzspektroskopisch untersucht und die Quantenausbeuten ermittelt. Hierzu wird ein neuartiges Messverfahren entwickelt, das auf der Verwendung eines kommerziellen Fluoreszenzspektrometers und einer Integrationskugel beruht, und das es erlaubt, die Quantenausbeute sowohl von Pulvern als auch von Flüssigkeiten und Suspensionen zu bestimmen. Außerdem wird der Einfluss von Dotierungen auf die Lumineszenzeigenschaften sowie ein möglicher Energietransfer untersucht. Zusätzlich zu den nanoskaligen Leuchtstoffen wird aufgrund des großen Interesses an magnetischen Metallnanopartikeln das Verhalten von metallhaltigen Ionischen Flüssigkeiten gegenüber verschiedenen Reduktionsmitteln untersucht. Novel Functionalized Rare Earth Metal Clusters and Polymers

Novel functionalized rare earth metal clusters and polymers have been prepared, characterized and investigated with respect to various potential applications. The literature known tetra- and pentanuclear rare earth metal hydroxy clusters [Ln4( 3-OH)2(Ph2acac)10] (Ln = Pr, Nd, Sm) and [Ln5( 4-OH)( 3-OH)4(Ph2acac)10] (Ln = Y, Eu) were embedded into different polymer matrices applying the miniemulsion polymerization technique to give cluster-polymer hybrid nanocompounds with narrow size distributions. The polymer matrices involved were composed of polystyrene (PS), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), poly(lauryl methacrylate) (PLMA) and poly(butyl acrylate-co-methyl methacrylate) (PBA-co-MMA). As a consequence of encapsulation, aqueous dispersions containing the hydrophobic clusters with more than 1000 mg¿L-1 could be prepared. Subsequent optical investigations revealed the retention of the encapsulated clusters` photophysical properties in aqueous dispersions. Additionally, a very efficient energy transfer from the ligand and polymeric unit to the Eu3+-ions was observed.Envisioning a functionalization of these pure Ph2acac clusters, the pentanuclear mixed ligated rare earth metal hydroxy clusters [Ln5( 4-OH)( 3-OH)4( AA)4(Ph2acac)6] (1-6) (Ln = Y: AA = D-PhGly (1), L-Pro (2), L-Val (3), L-Trp (4), Ph2Gly (5) Ln = Dy: AA = D-PhGly (6)) were reproducibly prepared in gram scale and the corresponding solid state structures were established via single crystal X-ray analysis. Clusters 1-6 display a square pyramidal {Ln5( 4-OH)( 3-OH)4}10+ scaffold, which is coordinatively and electronically saturated by six chelating Ph2acac ligands and four amino acid ligands acting as bridging chelates. The hydrodynamic radius rH of valine cluster 3 was determined via NMR-based PGSE diffusion experiments, revealing the retention of the cluster`s scaffold upon dissolution. Furthermore, 2D NMR experiments with 3 showed a heteronuclear cross coupling between 89Y and 1H nuclei. Applying similar reaction conditions as for 1-6, mixed ligated pentadecanuclear clusters accommodating the bifunctionalized peptoid ligand PepCO2 of formula [Ln15( 3-OH)20(PepCO2)10(Ph2acac)10 Cl]Cl4 (Ln = Y (7), Tb (8), Dy (9)) were obtained in gram scale. ESI-MS experiments in methanol have shown that the hydroxy bridges in clusters 7-9 undergo a methanolysis. The hydrodynamic radius rH of the diamagnetic cluster 7 determined via PGSE NMR diffusion experiments agrees very well with the value deduced from the X-ray data. The 1H,89Y gHMQC spectrum of 7 has confirmed the presence of two chemically distinguishable yttrium atoms. Magnetism and susceptibility measurements of dysprosium cluster 9 have revealed a behaviour which is typical for single-molecule-magnets (SMM). Terbium cluster 8 shows emission of orange luminescence at a wavelength of 613 nm. In vitro investigations were performed by incubating HeLa tumor cells with 7-9, showing an internalization of the clusters and subsequent enrichment in either the endoplasmatic reticulum (7 and 9) or the cytosol and the nucleus (8). Reaction of [LnCl3¿(H2O)6] (Ln = Y, Nd, Dy) with -ketoester ethyl acetylacetate (acacOEtH) under basic conditions yielded the nonanuclear rare earth metal hydroxy clusters [Ln9( 4-O)( 4-OH)( 3-OH)8(acacOEt)16] (Ln = Y (10), Nd (11), Dy (12)). The conversion of [NdCl3¿(H2O)6] with four equivalents of Ph2acacH and KOtBu each gave a onedimensional coordination polymer of formula [K(CH2Cl2)2{Nd(Ph2acac)4]n (13), whereas analogous reactions using [PrCl3¿(H2O)7] and [SmCl3¿(H2O)6] afforded the literature known tetranuclear clusters [Ln4( 3-OH)2(Ph2acac)10] (Ln = Pr, Sm). Analogous onedimensional coordination polymers [Cs{Ln(Ph2acac)4(C3H7NO)2]n (Ln = Pr (14), Nd (15), Sm (16), Dy (17)) were obtained using Cs2CO3 as base. The Ph2acac ligands of the isostructural compounds 14-17 serve to link the metal atoms by chelating and bridging in : 2: 2-mode. Since the ESI-MS spectra of 13-17 in DMF contain signal sets of several ionic species, complex equilibria in solution are suggested. Additionally, ultra-short-time dynamics in solution were investigated via femtosecond laser spectroscopy. The results allow an assignment of rare earth metal atom specific relaxation processes which arise from the lifetimes of their individual excited states. ····· 10361192947

In the 1H NMR spectra, the signal due to -CH=N-, -N-NH, NH2 and aromatic protons were observed in the expected regions. Stability Constant Study

The equilibrium constants for trivalent metal ions (Fe3+ and Cr3+) and divalent metal ions (Cu2+, Ni2+ and Co2+) with ligands gallic acid, L-norleucine and nicotinic acid were studied by using pH-potentiometric titration in aqueous solution at 25oC (I = 0.15M NaNO3). In order to determine the stability constant values, the protonation constants of free ligands were also determined. The complexation model for each system was established by the software program HYPERQUAD 2008 from potentiometric titration data. UV spectrophotometric measurement was carried out to confirm the complex that formed in each solution qualitatively. The phenomenon that occurred in each system was discussed. In terms of the nature of metal ion, the trend of stability constant is Cu2+Ni2+Co2+, which is in agreement with the Irving-William order of divalent metal ions. For trivalent metal ions, stability constant of Fe3+ is always higher than that of Cr3+. In terms of the ligand, the system that contains gallic acid as a ligand is more stable than the other systems that do not contain gallic acid. ····· 1036198757

In this work the adsorption isotherms of Thorium(IV) and Uranium(VI) onto Azraq Humic acid (AZHA) were studied at different temperature and pH values. The results indicate that Thorium(IV) has higher adsorptivity than Uranium(VI). The increasing of pH resulted in higher adsorptivity of Actinides. In contrast to heavy metals and Lanthanides (entropy driven), the adsorption of Actinides on HA was found to be exothermic and so enthalpy driven. This leads to the hypothesis that Thorium(IV) and Uranium(IV) are encapsulated in the interior of HA helix with their water of hydration because the interior is full with water. Mismatched Interactions in Bis(phenolato) Metal Complexes: Insights from Experimental Charge Density

Bis(phenolate) complexes of the early transition metals, such as titanium, are precatalysts for olefin polymerization. The ligand structure has a strong influence on the stereochemistry of the resulting polymer. For this reason, the bis(phenolate) ligands have been tuned by different substituents on the aromatic rings (R1 and R2) as well as by modifying the bridging unit. S atoms as part of the bridge can improve the catalytic activity, obviously as a result of hemilabile interactions. However, little is known about the bonding situation between the central metal and the ligands` sulfur atoms in these complexes. To clarify the bonding situation between these, according to the HSAB principle, mismatched atoms, bis(phenolato)titanium complexes as model compounds for active catalysts in the homogeneous olefin polymerization were synthesized and examined with high resolution Xray single crystal analysis. With the cyclohexyl bridged ligand a system was found which renders the base frame of the active catalysts. These model compounds do not comprise sterically demanding or disordering groups, which prevent a good resolution in single crystal X-ray analysis. It was possible to get high quality crystals of two different bis(phenolato)titanium complexes and one of the corresponding ligands. Furthermore a simplified cyclohexyl bridged salen ligand was used for complexation with titanium tetrachloride. The first crystal structure for dichlorido-N,N`-bis(salicylidene)-1,2cyclohexanediamino-titanium(IV) is reported here. Based on high-resolution data sets from the single crystal X-ray analysis, a multipole refinement based on the Hansen-Coppens multipole formalism was performed. The multipole refinement leads to an aspherical electron density, which enables the inspection of the bonding conditions in the molecule. With the aspherical electron density, a topological analysis of the bonding states was conducted. ····· 10361108178

Specimens of ZrB2 containing various concentrations of SiC, TaB2, and TaSi2 were pressureless-sintered and post-HIPed to theoretical densities. Oxidation resistances were studied by scanning thermogravimetry over the range 1150 - 1550 C, and isothermal thermogravimetry at 1200 - 1900 C. Most silicon-containing compositions formed a glassy surface layer, covering an interior oxide layer. This interior layer was less porous in tantalum-containing compositions. Small concentrations of TaB2 additions were more effective at increasing oxidation resistance than equal additions of TaSi2. The benefit of these additives was related to the formation of fine particles of ZrO2 and TaC during oxidation. These particles resisted wicking of their liquid/glassy borosilicate encapsulation. With increasing TaB2 or TaSi2 concentration, oxidation resistance degraded. In these cases, zirconia dendrites appeared to grow through the glassy layers, providing conduits for oxygen migration. At 1700 C and above, a layer of ZrB2 devoid of SiC was argued to be from preferential removal of SiC by reaction of silica oxidation product with adjacent unreacted SiC to form escaping gases. ····· 10361101673

Herein, the hydrothermal synthesis (HS) of hematite NRs is investigated using a combination of analytical techniques. Development of a novel, valve-assisted, hydrothermal pressure vessel, which allows for the rapid quenching of hydrothermal products as a function of reaction time and known reaction temperature, provided fundamental insight into the anisotropic crystal growth mechanism of the acicular hematite NRs. The hematite NR growth mechanism was found to be a two stage process: 1) the growth and dissolution of intermediate -FeOOH NRs, alongside precipitation of primary hematite nanoparticles (NPs) and 2) the agglomeration and coarsening of primary hematite NPs into hematite NRs. The isolation of the unsymmetrical Schiff bases and their VO(IV) complexes as well as some of the symmetrical Schiff bases and their complexes generated in this research work was considered to be novel. The in vitro and in vivo insulin-mimetic studies show that majority of the Schiff base complexes of VO(IV) were active and two of the complexes were as active or more active than insulin. In addition, 113Cd NMR spectra suggested the participation of -N and -OH containing ligands, and a six-coordinate structure. The Mössbauer spectra of Fe-57 revealed unequal bond lengths between Fe(III) ion and the bonded ligand atoms, and marine algae exhibited a reducing ability into Fe(II) moieties of low octahedral symmetry. Three polyhedral geometries around Sn-119 tetravalent moieties are in equilibrium, and are concentration dependent. The alga chlorella vulgaris restored part of its lost capacity towards metal binding, upon reuse, by aqueous ethanol metal ion solutions which increased with decrease in ionic radii. ····· 1036192441

Saccharine (Sac) and Melamine (Mela) were immobilized onto RHACCl to form RHAC-Sac and RHAPrMela. The catalysts showed good textural and structural properties. RHAC-Sac, RHAPrMela, RHAPrSO3H, RHA Blank (as control) as well as homogenous Sac and homogenous Mela were used as catalysts in the esterification reaction. The catalytic activity was found to follow the sequence: RHAPrSO3H RHAPrMela homogenous Sac RHAC Sac homogenous Mela RHA Blank. In Part B, various di-, tri- and chlorodiorganotin(IV) thiocarboxylates have been synthesized by the reaction of di- and triorganotin(IV) chlorides with thiocarboxylic acid in stoichiometric amount in dry toluene under reflux conditions. The structural assignments were made on the basis of spectral techniques such as FT-IR, 1H, 13C, 119Sn NMR, mass spectrometry and XRD which ascertain the tetrahedral environment around the tin atom in solution, while penta or hexa coordination is found in the solid state. Biological activity tests of the synthesized carboxylates and thiocarboxylates were made against various medically important bacteria, fungi, insects and leishmania. Most of the compounds were found to show activity with a few exceptions. These compounds were also evaluated for their cytotoxicity using the brine-shrimp lethality bioassay method. Electron irradiation may be a useful method for treating inorganic cosmetic powders such as talc for undesirable microorganisms if it can be established that no loss of quality or efficacy results as a consequence of the technique. A commercial electron accelerator was used to prepare bulk samples by exposure to electron irradiation under different conditions. A morphological characterisation of the control talc was carried out using microscopy techniques and focused on the particle size, shape and surface features of individual particles. Asperity dimensions vs. Roughness values were compared. Assessment of the bulk properties of the powders as a function of absorbed dose showed no serious impact on the quality or efficacy of the powder for cosmetic applications. The particle size and the level of dust expelled during impact were maintained. Changes to the surface chemistry of the irradiated powders were apparent from an increase in pH and water retention with increasing dose. Improvements to the fragrance retention occurred for both irradiated powders tested.
