Während des Dialoges einigt man sich, dass der Mensch Gott gegenüber Genugtuung (Satisfaktion) zu leisten habe, die die begangene Sünde angemessen ausgleicht. Anderenfalls wäre nämlich Gott ungerecht, weil er die Sünde ungestraft ließe. Da der Mensch auf Grund seines gefallenen Status unmöglich diese Genugtuung erbringen kann, müsste Gott die gesamte Menschheit verwerfen, was aber seiner Barmherzigkeit widerspricht. Der Gott-Mensch Jesus hingegen kann die Menschheit mit Gott durch seinen Kreuzestod versöhnen, da er als sündloser Mensch durch seinen Tod eine Genugtuung erbringen kann, die die Erbsünde angemessen ausgleicht. The `human reason` pronounces judgment concerning the character of the end it is, therefore, the law for action. By repeating a good action, man acquires a moral habit or a quality which enables him to do the good gladly and easily. This is true, however, only of the intellectual and moral virtues (which Aquinas treats after the manner of Aristotle) the theological virtues are imparted by God to man as a `disposition`, from which the acts here proceed while they strengthen, they do not form it. Those who may question his conclusions cannot trace them to an unworthy motive. Timid theologians will be occasionally startled by his expositions. Bede`s best-known work is the Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum, or An Ecclesiastical History of the English People. Completed in about 731, the first of the five books begins with some geographical background, and then sketches the history of England, beginning with Caesar`s invasion in 55 B.C. A brief account of Christianity in Roman Britain, including the martyrdom of St Alban, is followed by the story of Augustine`s mission to England in 597, which brought Christianity to the Anglo-Saxons. The second book begins with the death of Gregory the Great in 604, and follows the further progress of Christianity in Kent and the first attempts to evangelize Northumbria. These ended in disaster when Penda, the pagan king of Mercia, killed the newly Christian Edwin of Northumbria at the Battle of Hatfield Chase in about 632. The setback was temporary, and the third book recounts the growth of Christianity in Northumbria under kings Oswald of Northumbria and Oswy. The climax of the third book is the account of the Council of Whitby, traditionally seen as a major turning point in English history. The fourth book begins with the consecration of Theodore as Archbishop of Canterbury, and recounts Wilfrid`s efforts to bring Christianity to the kingdom of Sussex. The fifth book brings the story up to Bede`s day, and includes an account of missionary work in Frisia, and of the conflict with the British church over the correct dating of Easter. Bede wrote a preface for the work, in which he dedicates it to Ceolwulf, king of Northumbria. The preface mentions that Ceolwulf received an earlier draft of the book presumably Ceolwulf knew enough Latin to understand it, and he may even have been able to read it. The preface makes it clear that Ceolwulf had requested the earlier copy, and Bede had asked for Ceolwulf`s approval this correspondence with the king indicates that Bede`s monastery had excellent connections among the Northumbrian nobility. Caecilius Natalis was a native of Cirta he lived at Rome and attentively followed Minucius in his activity as an advocate. Octavius had just arrived from a foreign country where he had left his family. Minucius lived at Rome. All three were advocates. The name Minucius Felix has been found on inscriptions at Tebessa and Carthage (Cor. Inscrip. Lat. VIII, 1964 and 12499) that of Octavius Januarius at Saldae (Bougie ib., 8962) that of Caecilius at Cirta itself (ib., 7097-7098, 6996). The M. Caecilius Natalis of the inscriptions discharged important municipal duties and gave pagan festivals with memorable prodigality. He may have belonged to the same family as the interlocutor of the dialogue. Attempts have been made to make them identical or to establish family relationship between them. These are pure hypotheses subordinate to the opinion entertained regarding the date of the dialogue. The persons are real. The dialogue may likewise be so, despite the fact that Minucius has transformed into an almost judicial debate what must have been a mere conversation or series of conversations. Owing to the adjournment of the courts during the vintage time, the three friends went for rest to Ostia. Here they walked on the sea-shore, and when they passed before a statue of Serapis, Caecilius saluted it with the customary kiss. Octavius thereupon expressed his indignation that Minucius should allow his daily companion to fall into idolatry. They resume their walk while Octavius gives an account of his voyage they go to and fro on the shore and the quay they watch children jumping about in the sea. This beginning is charming it is the most perfect portion of the work. During the walk Caecilius, silenced by the words of Octavius, has not spoken. He now explains himself and it is agreed to settle the debate. They seat themselves on a lonely pier Minucius seated in the centre is to be the arbitrator. Thereupon Caecilius begins by attacking Christianity Minucius says a few words, and then Octavius replies. At the end Minucius and Caecilius express their admiration and the latter declares that he surrenders. Fuller explanations of the new religion are postponed until the next day. The style of the Epistle itself called for this, being such as almost constantly to remind anattentive reader of the necessity of froming some notion of the views and feelings of the persons to whom it was orginally addressed. To this point St. Crysotom has paid much attention, and has consequently obtained a far clearer view of the doctinal bearing of the Epistle than most other commentators. His early rhetorical education would probably have given him even to strong a bias toward that kind of exposition, but for his supsequent course of severe discipline and ascetic devotion. As it is, the rhetorical element in his commentary is of ver great value. His ready apprehension of the effect intended to be prodcued by the style and wording of a sentence, is often the means of clearing up what minght othewise seem obscure of even inconsistent. An example of this occurs in the beginning of the seventh cahpter, which he expounds in the 12th Homily. The illustration of uor release from the Law of Moses by partaking in the Death of Christ, by the dissolution of marriage at deat, is so stated in the Epistle as to contain an apparent inconsistency, as though the death of the Law, and the death of the personn, were confounded. And the various readings only shift the difficulty, without removing it. This, however, he has very ably shown to be, in fact, an argument a priori. Montfaucon consideres his little mention of the sin of swearing a sign of his accomplished some reformation on that point by his previous exertions. In the Homilies delievered from 386 to 388, it is a constant topic and the Homilies known to belong to that date are so numerous, as scarcely leave room for such a series as the present. These, however, contain very little to mark the period to which they belong. The argument from his reference to dissensions some time gone by, possible those between St. Meletius and Paulinus and Evagrius, in commenting on St. Matt. xxiii. 6. is not very conclusive. A modern reader must sometimes be struck with finding in St. Chrysostom a kind of criticism, which we are apt to thing belongs only to later times. Hist main object, however, is moral, and he searches out with diligence both the meaning and the applications of particular passages, usually concluding with an eloquent exhortation to some special virtue. Some of the most remarkable of these exhortations are on the subject of Alms-giving, which he seems to have pressed with some success at last. His calculation in Hom. lxvi as to what might be done, is somewhat curious. In the end of Hom. lxxxviii. he demands a reformation as the condition of his entering on the cntroversy with Infidels. But the Psalms have been so in the mouth and in the heart of God`s people in all languages, that it has been necessary often to find an explanation suitable to imperfect translations. And no doubt it is intended that we should use such explanations for the purpose of edification, when we are unable to be more accurate, though in proving doctrine it is necessary always to remember and allow for any want of acquaintance with the original, or uncertainty with respect to its actual meaning. However, the main scope and bearing of the text is rarely affected by such points as vary in different translations, and the analogy of the faith is sufficient to prevent a Catholic 4 mind from adopting any error in consequence of a text seeming to bear a heterodox meaning. Perhaps the errors of translation in the existing versions may have led the Fathers to adopt rules of interpretation ranging too far from the simple and literal but having such translations, they could hardly use them otherwise. Meanwhile St. Augustin will be found to excel in the intense apprehension of those great truths which pervade the whole of Sacred Writ, and in the vivid and powerful exposition of what bears upon them. It is hardly possible to read his practical and forcible applications of Holy Scripture, without feeling those truths by the faith of which we ought to live brought home to the heart in a wonderful manner. Its authority has always been great among the theologians of the East and West. Here, again, the author modestly disavows any claim of originality - any purpose to essay a new exposition of doctrinal truth. He assigns himself the less pretentious task of collecting in a single work the opinions of the ancient writers scattered through many volumes, and of systematizing and connecting them in a logical whole. It is no small credit to John of Damascus that he was able to give to the Church in the eighth century its first summary of connected theological opinions. At the command of Eugenius III it was rendered into Latin by Burgundio of Pisa, in 1150, shortly before Peter Lombard`s `Book of Sentences` appeared. This translation was used by Peter Lombard and St. Thomas Aquinas, as well as by other theologians, till the Humanists rejected it for a more elegant one. The author follows the same order as does Theodoret of Cyrus in his `Epitome of Christian Doctrine`. But, while he imitates the general plan of Theodoret, he does not make use of his method. He quotes, not only form the pages of Holy Writ, but also from the writings of the Fathers. As a result, his work is an inexhaustible thesaurus of tradition which became the standard for the great Scholastics who followed. In particular, he draws generously from Gregory of Nazianzus, whose works he seems to have absorbed, from Basil, Gregory of Nyssa, Cyril of Alexandria, Leo the Great, Athanasius, John Chrysostum, and Epiphanius. The work is divided into four books. This division, however, is an arbitrary one neither contemplated by the author nor justified by the Greek manuscript. Until the beginning of the fourth century historiography remained a pagan science. With the exception of the Acts of the Apostles and its apocryphal imitations, no sort of attempt hadbeen made to record even the annals of the Christian Church. At the opening of the fourth century Eusebius conceived the idea of writing a history which should include a complete account of the Church`s life to his own days. Hence he has correctly been called the Father of Church History. His work was done so satisfactorily to his contemporaries and immediate successors that none of them undertook to go over the same field again. They estimated the thoroughness and accuracy of his work much higher than later ages have done. But this respect, which enhanced the magnitude of his work in their eyes, at the same time inspired many of them with a desire to imitate him. As the title of the work indicates, the subject is chiefly the vicissitudes and experiences of the Christian Church but the author finds various reasons for interweaving with the account of ecclesiastical affairs some record also of the affairs of the state. His statement of these reasons puts first among them the relief his readers would experience by passing from the accounts of the perpetual wranglings of bishops to something of a different character second, the information which all ought to have on secular as well as ecclesiastical matters and third, the interlacing of these two lines, on account of which the understanding of the one cannot be full without some knowledge of the other. ` By a sort of sympathy,` says he, `the church takes part in the disturbances of the state,` and `since the emperors became (Christians, the affairs of the church have become dependent on them, and the greatest synods have been held and are held at their bidding.` It cannot be said, however, that Socrates either thoroughly realized or attempted any systematic treatment of his subject from the point of view of the true relations of church and state he simply had the consciousness that the two spheres were not as much dissociated as one might assume. ····· 1036143505

The `Miscellanies` comprise seven entire books, of which the first four are earlier than `The Tutor`. When he had finished this latter work he returned to the `Miscellanies`, which he was never able to finish. The first pages of the work are now missing. What has been known as the eighth book since the time of Eusebius is nothing more than a collection of extracts drawn from pagan philosophers. In the `Miscellanies` Clement disclaims order and plan. He compares the work to a meadow where all kinds of flowers grow at random and, again, to a shady hill or mountain planted with trees of every sort. In fact, it is a loosely related series of remaks, possibly notes of his lectures in the school. It is the fullest of Clement`s works. He starts with the importance of philosophy for the pursuit of Christian knowledge. Here he is perhaps defending his own scientific labours from local criticism of conservative brethren. He shows how faith is related to knowledge, and emphasizes the superiority of revelation to philosophy. God`s truth is to be found in revelation, another portion of it in philosophy. It is the duty of the Christian to neglect neither. Religious science, drawn from his twofold source, is even an element of perfection, the instructed Christian -- `the true Gnostic` is the perfect Christian. He who has risen to this height is far from the disturbance of passion he is united to God, and in a mysterious sense is one with Him. Such is the line of thought indicated in the work, which is full of digressions. `The Tutor` is a practical treatise in three books. Its purpose is to fit the ordinary Christian by a disciplined life to become an instructed Christian. In ancient times the paedagogus was the slave who had constant charge of a boy, his companion at all times. On him depended the formation of the boy`s character. such is the office of the Word Incarnate towards men. He first summons them to be HIS, then He trains them in His ways. His ways are temperate, orderly, calm, and simple. Nothing is too common or trivial for the Tutor`s care. His influence tells on the minute details of life, on one`s manner of eating, drinking, sleeping, dressing, taking recreation, etc. The moral tone of this work is kindly very beautiful is the ideal of a transfigured life described at the close. Die Arbeit hat zum Ziel, die Entstehung und Entwicklung des Islambildes im christlichen Abendland unter diskurshistorischen Aspekten zu betrachten. Es geht darum dieses Bild in seinem gegenwärtigen Zustand gemäß den Erkenntnissen und Methoden der interkulturellen Philosophie und der Angewandten Toleranz auf seine Stimmigkeit und seine Tauglichkeit für die Zukunft hin zu überprüfen. Die Studie ist in fünf Kapitel aufgeteilt. Inhalt des ersten Kapitels ist, den Begriff `Islam` zu fassen, einen historischen Überblick über die Jahrhunderte zu geben, wobei die gegenwärtigen politischen und philosophischen Strömungen am Beispiel Iran genauer spezifiziert werden, und den Islam in einen Zusammenhang mit anderen Religionen, insbesondere den Schriftreligionen, zu stellen. Dabei soll der Islam so gezeigt werden, wie er sich selbst versteht. Die Sicht des Morgenlandes auf das Abendland rundet dieses Kapitel ab. Im zweiten Kapitel wird die Entstehung und Entwicklung des Orient- und Islambildes im westlichen Diskurs von Altertum über das Mittealter bis zur Neuzeit dargestellt. Es tritt deutlich zutage, daß sich zu verschiedenen Zeiten aufgrund bestimmter historischer, religiöser und politischer Gegebenheiten unterschiedliche Diskurse ausprägten, wobei der Orient selten neutral, sondern meist verzerrend und abwertend gesehen wurde. Hauptgegenstand des dritten Kapitels ist, die verschärfte Auseinandersetzung des Westens mit dem Islam im gegenwärtigen Medienzeitalter detailliert darzustellen. Unter dem Begriff `Medien` werden hier Presse, Funk und Fernsehen, aber auch Literatur ethnologischen Inhalts, wissenschaftliche Literatur und Schulbücher verstanden. Die in diesen Medien gepflegte Sprache ist, mit einigen Modifizierungen, eine Fortsetzung der im zweiten Kapitel aufgezeigten antiislamischen Diskurse. Die Methodologie von Imperialismus und Islamismus ist Gegenstand des vierten Kapitels. Beide ähneln sich in ihrer Struktur und stellen für die Weltgesellschaft eine Herausforderung hinsichtlich der Gestaltung eines friedlichen Miteinanders dar. Das fünfte Kapitel stellt die Konzeptualisierung einer interkulturellen Philosophie der Toleranz vor, die von einer Verbindung zwischen `West`, `Ost`, `Ich`, `Du`, `Wir`, `Ihr` ausgeht.
