An Assessment of Carbon Stock in Tropical Shorea robusta Forest

As both carbon sources and sinks, they have the potential to form an important component in efforts to combat global climate change. Accounting for the carbon within forest ecosystems and changes in carbon stocks resulting from human activities is a necessary first step towards the better representation of forests in climate Change policy at global, regional, and national scales. The study was carried out in the tropical forest of Institute of Forestry (IOF), Hetauda, Nepal. Species richness and Shannon-Wiener index were found higher in herbs/grasses followed by shrubs and trees respectively. The total biomass of different species of trees was found 473.91 t/ha. The total carbon stock in the forest was 203.78 t/ha with the aboveground Carbon stock 177.21 t/ha and below ground stock26.57 t/ha. . The carbon Stock in Shorea robusta was found to be Highest (198.49 t/ha). Different management practices and economic valuation of carbon are recommended for effective management of carbon stock for the benefit of forest itself and nation.
