This plant is the most used by the populations of the west of the island. In this region of Sakalava, it is called Motrobeatiagnana or Motrobeatianina, which means "great fire in the bowels" because the whole aerial part of the plant has a spicy flavor. Also according to the different Malagasy dialects it is called Fanalamangidy, "that removes the bitterness", Mangidymanitra, "that smells bitter", Sakarivohazo, "ginger wood" or Sakaihazo, "Pimienta wood".
