Both hydroxylisin and hydroxyproline are produced after the synthesis of the polypeptide chain, by modification of the non-hydroxylated amino acids by specific enzymes. Collagen fibres are flexible, but offer high tensile strength. Collagen is responsible for forming the entire structure of skin tissues, bones and joints. Collagen is the most abundant and important structural protein in the human body, so much so that it constitutes 70% of the dry weight of human skin. It is a very flexible structure.
