In this thesis the photonic crystal line-defect waveguides are investigated. Four major issues of slow light are considered: small group velocity, large second order dispersion, coupling to small group velocity modes, and disorder induced losses. Following concepts are presented: constant group velocity 0.02c on the bandwidth of 1THz, dispersion of -200ps/nm/mm on the bandwidth of 100GHz, two stage coupling with 95% transmission at 0.02c group velocity.
