Land use information can be used to develop solutions for natural resource management issues such as salinity and water quality. For instance, water bodies in a region that has been deforested or having erosion will have different water quality than those in areas that are forested. Bangladesh is a third world developing country with a huge population within a small area. But its favorable climate, countless rivers, fertile soil, flora & fauna, natural resources make it rich. But we can t enjoy our resources because of the high pressure of population. For proper management of existing land and for sustainable development Bangladesh must adopt some policy. For the policy and protection of land it is necessary to explore the present situation of land use pattern, its trends and nature of dependency on land. ····· 10361131883

Generally it has been seen that people living in vulnerable city areas are more vulnerable to health risks and diseases especially where population is high and urbanization is rapidly expanding in an unplanned manner. The rapid pace of urbanization would presuppose an increase in the provision of infrastructure.Urbanization could cause a strain to the municipal infrastructures and finally assessing their impacts on the environment. Municipal solid waste is useless or unwanted material discarded as a result of human or animal activity. As urbanization continues to take place, the management of solid waste is becoming a major public health and environmental concern in urban areas of many developing countries. The disposal of municipal solid waste is the generation, separation, collection transfers, transportation and disposal of waste in a way that takes into account mainly public health. ····· 10361131871

A more integrated approach that draws methods from both the physical and social sciences becomes necessary to better understand the physical flood hazard(scape) and the vulnerability of the at-risk population. Such an understanding is anticipated to lead to a more comprehensive strategy for urban flood risk management in the developing country context. This book is an attempt to demonstrate, by way of actual events, how such an integrated approach can be achieved and the merits thereof. The research is based on field experience of the 2006 and 2007 extreme weather events in the town of George in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. ····· 10361131769

To interpret how does the size of land holding impact the decision of a farmer regarding his choice of crops, and to evaluate this, selected villages were visited during the Kharif (summer) and Rabi (winter) season and farmers were selected on the basis of their farm sizes and the type of crops they prefer to grow in their field. Different farmers, i.e. large, medium, semi medium, small and marginal gave their choice of crops in their field .Which varies with the size of their fields. It was found that only 10 to 12 crops have their dominance in the study area during either season but their intensity or their area vary according to the size of farm. ····· 10361119766

Such situation has necessitated the use of alternative management approaches like Beach Management Units (BMUs), which promote more community involvement in the fisheries resources management. The objective of the study was to assess the effectiveness of BMUs strategy for managing the Lake Victoria fisheries resources. The emphasis was on how BMUs have managed to facilitate effective management of the lake environment. Findings from the study show that BMUs in the Lake Victoria basin have succeeded in reducing unsustainable practices and ensuring sustainable management of the fisheries resources. However, they need more moral and material support for enhanced sustainability. Target group include community members and stakeholders such as policy and decision makers, researchers, government and non-governmental institutions involved in the management of fisheries resources in the lake and aquatic environment in general. ····· 10361119744

According to NFHS-3 survey (2005-06) 48%, 42.5% and 19.8% children are respectively reported to be stunted, underweight and wasted. The reduction of child undernourishment is a major challenge for the government and policy makers. A widespread social and regional inequalities also prevail in the levels of child undernutrition in the country. The disadvantaged social groups (especially scheduled population) and some of the poorer pockets are bearing brunt of undernourishment. In this context, the study examines the degree of inter-state and social inequalities of child undernourishment. It has largely been found that the problem is deeply rooted in the larger socio-economic inequalities. The study further illustrates that Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) which is the major government sponsored programme to deal with undernourishment among the women and young children is least effective in most of the rural areas in the country. ····· 10361119595

This research aimed to determine, assess and analyse the uptake, use and application of seasonal forecasts amongst commercial maize farmers, and to determine the role that forecasts played in their management decision-making processes. Two assertions regarding the usefulness are made, namely that seasonal forecasts in South Africa are not generally used amongst maize farmers and secondly, that they are only likely to be beneficial when they are more accurate, more focused, more specific and better disseminated than at present. Maize farmers were targeted and surveyed to determine their use of forecasts. The gathered information provides appreciable insight into the usefulness of seasonal forecasts, validating both assertions and allowing forecast providers, analysts and distributors the opportunity of continual improvement, adaptation and sector-specific tailoring of information. ····· 10361119513

The book also illustrates how these changes affect the local community, such as impact of tourism and changes to the local identity of the community as an historic town, its culture and way of life. It documents local resident s reactions directed at minimising and reducing negative impacts by proposing forms of development such as community-based tourism such as home-stay tourism, cultural tourism, and historical tourism which they perceive to be more appropriate because they have less impact on the community and consume fewer resources. The book also illustrates that community involvement and participation in development are perceived by local residents to be key in achieving successful community development. ····· 10361118754

The physical and biological data have been collected from a wide range of lakes of Norway and Scotland. Primarily, how locally-mediated climate influences the lake ecosystem in mountain has been examined using seasonal dynamics of modern cladocderans from a Scottish mountain lake, Loch Coire Fionnaraich (LCFR). Secondly, recent climate change has been examined at a regional scale through the assessment of the modern cladcoerans from the Scottish and Norwegian mountain lakes by developing a training set followed by a construction of a summer lake surface water temperature (LSWT) transfer function. Thirdly, how precisely the transfer function is being developed for a past climate reconstruction in the region has been examined through a taphonomic study of cladocerans in LCFR. Finally, a regional scale climate change of northwest Europe has been reconstructed based on a cladoceran-inferred summer LSWT temperature transfer function in the LCFR. ····· 10361118488
für 71.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray This work investigates the hydrological aspects of desertification in drylands through water balance modelling. Rainfall, as the main water input to dryland hydrology, is characterised by strong variability over small spatial and temporal scales and determines water available as surface runoff, groundwater recharge and soil moisture. Thus, the focus here is on improving the realism of rainfall representation through optimal use of newly available remote sensing datasets. The hydrological importance of improved rainfall representation is investigated through modelling simulations using a dynamic, process-driven water balance model, DryMOD, applied in two distinctly different catchments in Tunisia and Senegal, respectively. The improved representation of rainfall in model-based scenarios helped to investigate small-scale variability of simulated rainfall, to identify runoff-generating areas, and to analyse the spatial distribution and seasonal variability of runoff and soil moisture all factors of paramount importance to water resource management in drylands. ····· 10361118108

Lake Mývatn is a key natural attraction in Iceland having a scenic natural habitat that can be easily damaged by tourism pressure.Realizing the potential threats and the importance of setting thresholds to the rapid tourism development, carrying capacity studies have been introduced in Iceland. The report focuses on the physical-ecological carrying capacity at lake Mývatn where such studies were never finalized and published. The objective of this thesis is to analyze the concept of Tourism Carrying Capacity in order to identify the relevant elements to the region of lake Mývatn and give recommendations for sustainable future growth. The findings lead to several important conclusions suggesting that limits of the physical-ecological carrying capacity at Mývatn have not been exceeded yet.
