····· 1036122801

This book presents the spatial prevalence of malaria and the coping strategies adopted to prevent and treat malaria in the Ga East Municipality. It was observed that the disease has consistently been the most predominant cause of morbidity and places a challenge on the health delivery system in the municipality. The book also shows that an interplay of environmental, economic and anthropogenic factors leads to differentials in vulnerability to malaria infections. Malaria also directly and indirectly affects the potential of an individual to undertake his or her daily economic activities, the ability to participate in community and religious gatherings. Malaria has the tendency of reducing household income and creates emotional and psychological distress. This book therefore identifies the weaknesses associated with the unavailability of basic services in urban fringes and how they affect health conditions. Anemia is a major public health problem in sub-Saharan Africa where prevalence is as high as 75%. Anemia, even when mild, is associated with reduced work productivity taking into account that African women perform a lot house chores sometimes up to time of delivery . Anemia in pregnancy has serious health consequences both to the mother and the fetus. It may cause maternal death, and for the fetus it may result in intrauterine growth retardation, still birth and low birth weight. It is therefore our responsibility as public health professionals to identify vegetarian foods that are rich in iron. This is necessitated by the fact that most African foods are cereal based. Cereals are sources of non-heme iron which is not readily absorbed without the use of absorption enhancers. We would be doing a great service to save lives of mothers and infants if we educate mothers on the way to get maximum dietary iron from cereal based foods. Heme iron sources, which are readily absorbed, are expensive and in most cases out of reach of rural mothers. Lets keep the spirit burning to save lives. ····· 10361128

For example, a MRI study of the brain may involve structural, spectroscopy, perfusion, and functional MRI in different sessions, providing anatomical, metabolic, physiological and functional information. Such data often needs to be analyzed and visualized separately as topological information in each dataset tends to be independent of the other. In this project, we explore a global approach that involves visualization and inter/intra-modality registration support for various MRI modalities and supplement it with a library of optimized tools for 3D image processing, performing multi-step complex DTI computation, gray-white matter classification, cortical thickness calculation, noise removal and perfusion ratio calculation. By quantitative comparisons of reproducibility of results at various processing steps, we measure the variability of the implemented algorithms and also attempt to solve issues like memory management, low robustness and scalability and high processing times. ····· 103613233

Little is known, however, about the typology of preventive health behaviour adopted by undergraduates of the University of Ibadan against the disease condition. This study, therefore determined the pattern and types of HIV preventive health behaviour among undergraduates of the University. The study was cross-sectional in design. A two-stage sampling procedure was used to randomly select 400 students from the Faculties of Pharmacy, the Social Sciences, Arts and Dentistry out of the thirteen Faculties in the university. A validated questionnaire which assessed the students preventive health behaviour and the antecedent factors was used for data collection. The prevalence of the adoption of each of the types of HIV preventive health behaviour among the participants was low in spite of their general high level of knowledge of the disease. Health education strategies such as peer education, social marketing and advocacy are needed to promote the adoption of preventive health behaviour among young persons. ····· 1036118070

Research efforts towards the search for neuroprotective substances in hopes to curtailing the consequences of these diseases are continuous. Most neurodegenrative diseases are usually a consequence of excess production of oxygen radicals from oxidative stress. The oxygen radicals are mopped up by antioxidants produced endogenously or from nutritional supplements. Flavonoids are rich sources of antioxidants. Thus have the ability to scavenge free radicals, making them harmless. There are abundant plants known to be rich in antioxidants. Kolaviron is the biflavonoid complex and most abundant constituent of one of such plants, Garcinia kola. Due to the antioxidant properties of kolaviron it will have the potential to protect neurons from toxic damage, and that is the focus of this work. Also this work hopes to encourage more researches amongst bio-medical scientists in search for more neuroprotective plant sources as these may make a key contribution to controlling and curtailing neurological diseases. ····· 1036118174

Though important, the hospital environment of care is arguably represented by multiple inter-professional and intangible factors that influence patient outcomes that are not cost-driven but service-oriented. In the absence of uniform standards that address common problems across diverse health care facilities such as the association of medical equipment with adverse events, hospital administrators must view alternative methods to measure effectiveness, efficiency, and equity. One method is to examine the inter-professional impact of the Biomedical Engineering Technician (BMET) occupation in the hospital Clinical Engineering Department on the level of hospital quality in the environment of care. The proposition is premised on the knowledge that 1) the BMET duties are associated with medical equipment status, and 2) the availability of properly functioning, clean, and timely access to medical equipment that is central to healthcare. The analysis found a range of different perspectives on inequities and their impact on health outcomes. Mainly participants perceived inequities in terms of differentials in health outcomes and unequal experiences related to health, which arise from uneven and inequitable distribution of resources and social interaction that has at its base an element of unfairness. The major forms of inequities were socioeconomic, based on place of residence and gender. The unfair and unnecessary inequities have huge impact on access to, affordability and lower utilisation of health care services that resulted in differences in morbidity and mortality between poor and rich, man and woman and urban and rural residents. Since the effect of migration on health and mortality may be mixed, it is important to explore this relationship closely. Studies of this kind present the opportunity to identify intervention programs appropriate in different populations in our attempt to reach the WHO Millennium Development Goal on infant and child mortality. Therefore, the goal of this paper was to assess whether or not father s migration improved child mortality using secondary data from Agincourt Health and Demographic Surveillance Site in South Africa collected in 2002. Throughout the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world the disease causes more than 300 million acute illnesses and at least a million deaths annually. Due to the heavy burden that it exerts on pregnant women and their infants, various policies have been implemented to control the disease in pregnant women. One such strategy is the use of intermittent preventive treatment (IPT) services with Sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP). This investigation shows that even though antenatal clinic (ANC) attendance is high among women, only 47.2% (CI 3.1 50.8) of women who took SP as IPT had three doses. Women who lack formal education are more likely not to have complete IPT (OR 1.5 95% CI 1.23 1.69). ANC staff in rural areas have been trained on IPT but there were occasional shortages of the drug in some health facilities. The study should help illuminate how specific variables significantly interact to influence the uptake of IPT services in rural settings. The process of agricultural production and the outputs it generates can contribute to both good and poor health, among producers as well as the wider population. Agriculture is fundamental for good health through the production of the world s food, fiber and materials for shelter, and in some systems, medicinal plants. Among rural communities it contributes to livelihoods and food security, and provides income which can be spent on health care and prevention. Agriculture is the primary source of livelihood for the majority of the India s rural population who in turn are most vulnerable to ill-health due to occupational risks. Knowledge of farmers about agrochemical use and safe animal keeping is a key to understanding how to take sensible precautions against health exposure. In vivo, knockout mice with PGK-Neomycin insertion control early murine cytomegalovirus infection better, but no difference could be detected in mice with recombined LoxP sites. Thus, we observed a differential immune response dependent on the gene knockout strategy. In mice with PGK-Neomycin insertion, we found enhanced hematopoiesis of some populations of the myeloid lineage and lower activation of pDCs following treatment with particular Toll-like receptor ligands, which translates into diminished T cell stimulatory capacity. This suggests a role for Ly49Q in regulating hematopoiesis and pDC activation potential. ····· 10361135568

Therefore, prevention and/or regression of LVH is a major therapeutic goal whether achieved by pharmacologic, mechanical, surgical or genetic means. Studeis were done in Sprague Dawley rats and it was found that at the renal resistance vessels, a multiple subtype shift of 1 adrenoceptor subtypes occurs which generated a complex feedback on the renal AT1 receptors. 1D adrenoceptor subtype gains functional importance in LVH with a minimal altered role of 1A and 1B adrenoceptors.Hence renal 1D adrenoceptors can be a potential therapeutic target for better treatment outcomes of LVH. The World Health Organization underlines that most maternal deaths occur due to delays to access appropriate obstetric care. Lack of readily available, accessible, reliable, affordable and organized means of transportation for rural expectant women seeking obstetric care has been recognized as one of the risk factors contributing to these deaths. A number of studies have documented that means of transportation available for expectant women especially in resource poor settings are- uncomfortable, slow, unreliable, unaffordable and dehumanizing- thus, striping women respect and dignity. To develop rational policies and feasible plans for efficient, acceptable, cost-effective, affordable and accessible health services, the drivers of health seeking behaviour need to be understood. Traditionally, the health policy planning process has been impaired due to a lack of information relating to the utilization of public, private and informal health care in Pakistan, especially among the rural remote population sub groups. No significant differences were observed for blood glucose across the 3 conditions (p = 0.442), but significance was found for core temperature, heat storage, and sweat rate (p 0.01). Blood glucose was also shown to vary greatly between individuals among conditions. Recently it is shown that in leukemia there is a locus specific HLA class Ia downregulation both at the antigenic and transcriptional level. As, so far, no mutation is recorded in HLA genes so the reason may lies at the expression of different transcription factors (TRFs) that regulate its expression. Reports suggest that there is an alteration of the constitutive region binding TRFs of the HLA promoter in leukemia. Though there is upregulation of some inducible region binding TRFs, but they are unable to transcribe the HLA class Ia genes. This indicates the accessory role of the inducible binding TRFs. Absence of non-classical HLA class I (class Ib) in leukemic cells may give us the molecular rationale for the success of NK cell mediated immunotherapy. Interestingly, neutrophils (PMNs) of normal volunteers in contact with leukemic cells showed HLA class II expression and oxidative damage towards the leukemic cells. The outcome of the study showed that the extract-induced behaviors in the rats were mediated via mainly Cholinergic, dopaminergic, GABAergic and opioid neural axis. It is suggested that treatment targeted at these systems may be useful in the management of seasonal ataxia in humans. ····· 1036192032

They are also more subject to external influences, which may drive them to adopt new practices such as drug use. Because of this increased vulnerability, they may become transmitters of STI/HIV to their families and communities back home. In fact, in Tamil Nadu, migration is the main link between HIV high-risk groups and the population at large. Although all elements point to the importance of a coordinated prevention policy for migrants on HIV, research on the subject has been minimal and inter-state cooperation has been restricted to a few isolated activities, falling short of a comprehensive policy on the subject. It is hoped that the present research will contribute to filling this gap. This research adopted a cross-sectional methodology, including a thorough literature review, and detailed questionnaires for 1009 slum dwellers. Additional qualitative data was collected, through 20 focus group discussions. ····· 1036119421

The purpose of this study is to understand the relationships among biomedical engineering technicians (BMETs) and clinical caregivers in order to promote hospital quality through the reduction of hospital acquired infections associated with medical equipment. The BMET health support occupation is under-represented in research despite evidence that validates their indirect impact on patient outcomes through their medical equipment duties. Results from the Biomedical Engineering Interdepartmental survey determined the effects of structural complexity and process adequacy in Clinical Engineering using structural equation analysis under the theoretical framework of Donabedian s Structure-Process-Outcome model. Statistical analysis leads to recommendations that hospital environments that create a coordinated organizational culture of interdepartmental device management through communication, collaboration, teamwork, and knowledge management can promote quality and therefore, reduce adverse events. ····· 1036120076
für 71.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray One of the key responses to the HIV/AIDS crisis has been the provision of School- based HIV/AIDS education, to try and improve teenagers` ability to make wise and sensible decisions regarding their behaviours. The interventions have been premised on links between education and behaviour, the underlying assumption being that teaching young people how to protect themselves from HIV can lead to a reduction in risk behaviour and hence a reduction in HIV incidence (UNAIDS, 1997). An important part of this process has been the development of an education sector policy on HIV and AIDS, aimed at implementing and effecting, among others, the policy goal of Prevention. This study, with the use of a systems theory as a theoretical framework, examines the policy, provision and practice of HIV/AIDS education in secondary schools in Kenya with the view to informing policy and providing options for re-designing and scaling up (if necessary) the HIV/AIDS program. ····· 1036120529

Standardized death certification rates for cerebrovascular disease in Bulgaria in the age group 0-64 were about six times higher than in England in 1994. Methods: This study is based on a sample of 3100 people aged 25 - 74. Subjects were invited to their local polyclinics where anthropometrical indices and blood pressure were measured, a blood sample drawn and questionnaire administered. Results: Means and proportions for ages 35 64 standardised to the world standard population, were for males and females respectively: Systolic blood pressure 132 mmHg and 129 mmHg, Diastolic blood pressure 86 mmHg and 85 mmHg, Total serum cholesterol 5.0 mmol/l and 5.0 mmol/l, Body Mass Index 26.2 kg/m2 and 25.8 kg/m2, regular smokers - 36% and 29%. Conclusions: The risk factor findings offer little explanation for reported mortality trends. Repeated surveillance studies will be needed and for these, greater attention will need to be given to achieving and maintaining quality in data collection. ····· 1036121198

This is a qualitative research, which employs a case study approach. Four cases were selected and, based on a framework for analyzing the policy process, data was collected using interviews, FGDs and document reviews. With the help of a computer-assisted data processing system, the qualitative data was analyzed and findings are presented as four single-case studies. The cross-case analysis generated discussion and a multiple-case study was developed that helped in identifying factors influencing the policy process for the Punjab health sector reforms. The study revealed six factors: (1) absence of clearly defined principles and purposes (2) insufficient involvement of stakeholders (3) lack of a holistic view of context (4) shortcomings of the policy machine (5) need for a proper implementation structure and (6) administrative fatigue of donors. ····· 10361133427
für 71.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray This book focuses on the measurement of factors that influence the quality of service systems, healthcare services in particular.Evaluation of quality in a healthcare organization is a multi-level effort. Developing a measuring instrument is an important step in assessing an organisation s service quality. Many of the earlier studies neglected significant impacts of issues because of the existence of governmental institutions. Models from past studies are confined in their capability and applicability to analyse service process to private healthcare institutions. Even though the various literatures provide the insight into evaluation and performance of a healthcare organization, an integrated quality model has not been addressed into. It is critical to measure healthcare service quality because of increased competition and become more market-oriented. In this scenario, this book endeavours to explore the research issues of service quality and its measurement with a specific reference to the healthcare sector in a developing economy. This research work assumes greater significance especially in the global context to adopt comprehensive approach in healthcare services. ····· 10361133810

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. Great efforts have been made in the treatment of breast cancer. Hesperidin is a natural bioflavonoid isolated from citrus fruits such as orange and lemon. The present study shows that hesperidin, a plant derived flavonoid, induced apoptosis in MCF-7 cells. The objective of the study was to evaluate the players of apoptotic cascade, tumor suppressor protein expressions in the presence of hesperidin in human breast cancer cells. Several proteins involved in this process were probed using appropriate antibodies, the intracellular redox levels and the viability of cells were analyzed in control and hesperidin treated cells. The mechanism of hesperidin mediated apoptosis was determined. Anticancer property of hesperidin in an animal model of breast carcinogenesis was also explored. Hesperidin exhibits excellent therapeutic activity. The implication of this inter-disciplinary approach will be useful in cancer detection, diagnosis, treatment with drugs, and for follow-up during chemotherapy. ····· 1036125633
····· 103612611
