Er hat eine Reaktionszeit von weniger als einer Pikosekunde! Damit ist er 1000x schneller als gängige Transistoren und 100x schneller als die schnellsten, die wir aktuell besitzen. Transistoren sind winzige kleine Ein- und Aus-Schalter. Sie können den Zustand 1 oder 0 annehmen. Richtig und zu millionen miteinander verknüpft, ergeben sie komplexe Schaltnetze, wie zum Beispiel Prozessoren. Die Entwicklung von IBM ist genau darum so bahnbrechend, weil wir mit der aktuellen Transistortechnik an Grenzen stoßen. Bisher haben wir die Leistung erhöht, indem Bauteile kleiner und kleiner wurden. Seit 50 Jahren hat dies auch problemlos funktioniert. Alle zwei Jahre hat sich die Anzahl der Schaltungskomponenten auf Chips verdoppelt. Bekannt ist dieses Prinzip als das Gesetz von Moore. Seit kurzer Zeit wissen wir allerdings, dass wir Transistoren nicht beliebig verkleinern können. Ab einer bestimmten Größe funktionieren sie nicht mehr zuverlässig. Forscher suchen daher schon seit längerer Zeit an alternativen Transistor-Konzepten um die Leistung anders zu erhöhen. Ein mögliches Konzept, Photonen, also Lichtteilchen statt Elektronen zu nutzen. IBM gelang nun dieses Konzept umzusetzen. Tatsächlich gelingt das Umschlagen des Transistorzustandes, also von null zu eins oder von eins zu null mit einem einzigen Photon. Die Forscher gehen davon aus, dass ihre Entwicklung ein Meilenstein ist. Im Direktvergleich ist der Licht-Transistor konventioneller Hardwaretechnik um gigantische Größenordnungen überlegen. Wie vielversprechend ist diese Technologie wirklich und wie funktioniert der neue Licht-Transistor überhaupt? Wie kann ein einzelnes Licht-Teilchen ausreichen um einen Transistor zu betreiben?
