She had neither a child of her own nor a named heir. Hence, the people of England worried about succession. They were aware of the power struggles that might take place when men vied for the throne of England. What is more, people also feared the violence of civil strife. Thus, it is not surprising that the theme of Julius Caesar was relevant to their concerns, even as the content of this play drew on and adapted ancient history. In 44 BC, Rome was at the very centre of an expanding empire. The city was governed by senators nevertheless, their politics were plagued by in-fighting. The true glory and strength, however, belonged to famous generals like Caesar and Antonius. What is more, a new group, the Tribunes, had entered the political field. After a hard-won battle, the working class of Rome, the plebeians, had elected these men as their representatives and protectors. Hence, the return of triumphant Caesar and his aim to centralize power went against the grain of the decentralizing that was taking place. Such a setting was fraught with the makings of dramatic conflict - in many respects, as we will see. ····· 10361190788

Hence, they focus on the myths, traditions and attitudes that are regarded as typically English. This is a subject which is also of central interest to recent literary criticism and cultural history at large. Among the many novels that deal with a literary exploration of England`s past, its cultural memory, and its national identity are such well-known works as John Fowles` Daniel Martin (1977), Jonathan Raban`s travelogue Coasting (1986), Andrew Sinclair`s `Albion triptych`, including his novels Gog (1967), Magog (1972) and King Ludd (1988), Adam Thorpe`s Ulverton (1992), Peter Ackroyd`s English Music (1992) and Antonia S. Byatt`s and Graham Swift`s novels. These works can be regarded as a kind of echo-chamber of England`s cultural history, for they display `deliberate Englishness`.1 With its interest in Englishness, the nature of historical truth, and the blurring of boundaries between the authentic and the imitation, Julian Barnes` novel England, England (1998), which was short-listed for the Booker prize in 1998, shares important concerns with many contemporary British novels. Like a host of other novels published after the 1960s, England, England focuses on the question of how much we can ever know about the past. Hence, this novel shows all the features characteristic of postmodernist historiographic metafiction. That is to say, like other historiographic metafictions, England, England is `both intensely selfreflexive and yet paradoxically also lay[s] claim to historical events and personages`.2 What is more, Barnes` novel also reflects the feature which has been the major focus of attention in most of the critical work on postmodernism, i.e. a self-conscious assessment of the status and function of narrative in literature, history, and theory: `its theoretical self-awareness of history and fiction as human constructs (historiographic metafiction) is made the grounds for its rethinking and reworking of the forms and contents of the past`.3 ····· 10361190787

In these descriptions the Indians are often called `Savages` because of their outer appearance and their behaviour. But were those Indians really savages, barbarians or devils Were they as uncivilized as often described or are those images the result of misunderstandings Is it possible that they were more civilized than the White Men To answer these questions it is necessary to have a closer look on those texts, for example, the texts of John Smith and Benjamin Franklin who build up different pictures of the Native Americans and the White Men. Smith`s and Franklin`s texts have varying approaches and backgrounds but both men had close contact to the Indians. Therefore their texts are good basics to answer the questions in an objective way because their varying descriptions make it possible to carefully consider the facts and opinions. Because both texts are subjective it is also necessary to give some facts about Indian tribes and their ways of life. John Smith`s text is about the Powhatan whereas Benjamin Franklin mostly writes about the Iroquois. Therefore it is obvious to also consider facts about those tribes and not only refer to Smith and Franklin. All these background information will help to clarify who `the real savages` are. ····· 10361190731

The question is not only how and why children understand grammatical forms and language (Ochs & Schieffelin 1995: 73), but also which role other aspects, such as Parentese and Baby Talk, play. Are they necessary or totally unimportant Should parents talk to their children at all or is it senseless because they do not understand what the parents say to them Some people are of the opinion that Parentese only plays `a minimal role` (Garnica 1977: 63) whereas other people think that the verbal environment is important. In how far is the acquisition of language `the result of a process of interaction between mother and child` (Snow 1977: 31) By explaining some aspects of talk to children, such as Parentese, Baby Talk, expansion, correction, imitation and by giving examples of children being socialized through language, the question about which role these aspects really play in first language acquisition should be answered. ····· 10361190730

Some Universals in Language Usage was published. They analyzed the pragmatically term politeness and the concept of face. But it was not only them who worked on that topic. Other persons who dealt with pragmatics too started to write books about politeness, mostly in reference to Brown`s and Levinson`s theory. Most of the books that were published are theoretical. Some of them include examples to underline the expositions and to make them more understandable. But the question is if pragmatical politeness is a phenomenon that is also noticeable in everyday language or if it really is a more theoretical term and therefore can hardly be practiced. To answer this question it is important to first give a definition of the pragmatical term politeness and to analyze it by using those theoretical books. Only then is it possible to prove if politeness is either used in everyday language or not. After that it is necessary to analyze a medium that is representative of daily situations. In this case one episode of the serial Friends will be worked on to see if it includes examples of the different parts of pragmatical politeness. When the analysis of both parts, the theoretical and the practical, is completed the question if pragmatical politeness is a more theoretical term or if it is noticeable in everyday language too will be answered. ····· 10361190729

····· 10361190691

Some books do not only fulfill this aim but also have a message. Young children should learn something important by reading those books. Those books are relevant for children`s literature because the children enjoy learning when the story is good and interesting. But what makes a book a relevant book Is it only the message, only the story, the characters or all of those This essay will show if Jerry Spinelli`s books Stargirl, Loser and Wringer do have a relevance in children`s literature and why by characterizing the protagonists and by finding out what Spinelli`s messages are. It concentrates on developments during the 1990s, bringing together all three popular genres of pop music during that period: indie rock, dance music and black music. Taking into account theoretical considerations on popular music, this thesis applies theories of collective identities in general and national identity in particular to Nineties pop. By analyzing an example of popular music media as well as selected music texts, the discourses within popular music culture are being compared to general discourses on questions of national identity within Great Britain. ····· 10361190612
