Facing climate change, we need strategies for decarbonizing the energy sector. In this thesis, decarbonization pathways for the European electricity supply sector are presented that meet the EU greenhouse-gas emission targets for 2050. A model-based assessment reveals different low-carbon scenarios for the European electricity sector. These scenarios present necessary changes in the electricity supply structure - fossil power plants are replaced be renewable energy technologies -, roll-out of energy storage systems, and related transmission grid extensions covering the period from 2020 to 2050.
