The UN has launched its biggest-ever appeal, seeking more than US$5 billion to help the country described as being on the brink of a humanitarian crisis and economic collapse. The joint appeal seeks US$4.4 billion for the UN and its humanitarian partners to help 22 million people in Afghanistan, about half the country’s population. It calls for US$623 million for the 5.7 million Afghans who fled abroad to neighbouring Iran, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.
