Schopenhauer - Leben im Absurden DrostenDoktorarbeit

····· lezzter Preis 12.80€ ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
····· 10361206617

Wie sollen wir leben? DrostenDoktorarbeit

····· lezzter Preis 21.00€ ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
A new Ethics for Our Treatment of Animals` (dt.

····· 10361206352

Good In Virtue Of

····· lezzter Preis 98.00€ ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
This volume brings together a group of essays that explore early modern theories of composite substances and their relevance to early modern views on the nature of plants and animals (both human and non-human). The metaphysics of composite substances was a unifying topic at the heart of quite diverse issues in early modern ontologies of living beings. For instance, it was applied in explanations of both the complexity and the unity of a living being, in conceptions of the structure of plant and animal seeds, in considerations concerning the nature and mutability of biological species, in exploring the physiological function of imagination in biological reproduction, in characterising the beings and processes responsible for diseases, and in understanding the relation between living beings and divine causation. While pre-modern in inspiration, the metaphysics of composite substances played an intriguing and still not well-enough understood role in the formation of modern philosophy. Thus, the present volume focuses on thinkers who are paradigmatic as transitional figures-figures who serve to understand the complex process by means of which non-mechanistic medieval conceptions of the structure of living beings were superseded in the second half of the seventeenth century by mechanistic conceptions of the structure of living beings. ····· 10361202086

Time and Tense

In the mid-20th century it was common to discuss philosophy of time with reference to the topics which shaped it through the centuries: future contingents, the irreversibility of the past, time as a continuum, infinitesimal time intervals, time as a relation, time as intuition etc. Bas van Fraassen`s An Introduction to the Philosophy of Time and Space, published in 1970, is one of the best examples of a big scholarship which offers modern solutions for the old issues of philosophy of time. Since then, the old issues were often overshadowed by new ones, sometimes specialized versions of the old issues, sometimes quite new: A- and B-series, multi-dimensional semantics, relativity. This volume wants to make the reader discover (again) the value of the old issues in the philosophy of time in the attempt to understand the new. The contributions of internationally renowned scholars like Milos Arsenijevic, Hans Burkhardt, William Lane Craig, Brigitte Falkenburg et al. form the framework in which Bas van Fraassen draws conclusions from the history of the philosophy of time - in many senses an eventful one. ····· 10361202085

Handbuch der Weisheit dieser Welt

····· lezzter Preis 18.00€ ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray

····· 10361202084

Ontological Dependence

····· lezzter Preis 88.00€ ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
This volume brings together a group of articles that explore some less familiar aspects of early modern conceptions of ontological dependence. A unifying theme of these essays is the role of discussions of dependence relations in the context of early modern theories of individual substances. How do individual substances depend on other individuals How do individual substances depend on their constituents such as matter and form, qualities and parts In which sense do they depend on divine agency And how can individuality be understood in such a way that dependence relations do not threaten the status of particulars as substances These questions bring into view some fascinating connections between ontological dependence and a whole field of other issues prominent in early modern metaphysics, such as the distinction between absolute and ordained divine potency, the nature of emanative causation, the eduction of forms from the potencies of matter, the relation between material and immaterial extension, the nature of physical indivisibility, the senses in which soul and body could be understood as incomplete entities, and the relation between simple substances and composite substances. ····· 10361202083

Axiomata Resoluta

····· lezzter Preis 88.00€ ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
John Adam Scherzer`s Axiomata Resoluta is a remarkably complete enumeration and defense of core principles of Scholastic Philosophy. It is somewhat like Aquinas`s celebrated On Being and Essence but is broader in scope and arguably clearer in statement. Anyone who is somewhat puzzled by things Aquinas says about the relations of genera to species and of specific essences to individuals, as well as about the ways in which genera and species are both like and unlike form and matter, will profit from a careful reading of the Axiomata. The work brings out, in a particularly luminous way, the centrality of the notions of potency and act to all Scholastic Philosophy, and shows that the Schoolmen, though realists and essentialists, were well aware of the fact that humans can come to know something about the essences of things only in a round about and imperfect way. Leibniz scholars will be particularly interested in it since, at several points, it indicates the ways in which Scherzer`s thought may have influenced Leibniz, Scherzer`s pupil at Leipzig. These are discussed in the introduction to the translation and in several of its explanatory notes. ····· 10361202082

The Ontology of Intentionality

····· lezzter Preis 98.00€ ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Regarding methodology, it is suggested that good philosophy is not usually done by axiomatic methods, which presume that self-evidently true statements are present at the start of theorizing. Rather, it is claimed that we need to start with vague explananda, which stand out by the virtue of being interesting for philosophers from many different `camps`, and perhaps even for thinkers from other fields. The criterion of what makes a good philosophical theory should then be how many of these explananda it can make sense of in a coherent way. Thus, the truth of the theory appears at the end of the theoretical investigation, and is not present at the beginning. The great advantage of this method is that it makes philosophical theorizing an essentially positive endeavour, in which many different researchers can cooperate constructively, rather than facing unhappy stalemates in which each side appeals to different yet supposedly self-evident intuitions. These ideas are then applied to a problem from the philosophy of mind, namely how intentionality - conceived as the connection between the human mind and its environment together with the possibility of error - can best be understood. To this aim four different adequate ontologies of intentionality are introduced. After then taking into consideration two additional data from the philosophy of mind - phenomenal experience and subjectivity - it is argued that Whitehead`s ontology of experience is the `best` ontology for the philosophy of mind, because it can offer the most adequate and most coherent explanation. ····· 10361202081

AVICENNA (Ibn S n ) was and remains the preeminent Islamic philosopher. His works on science, metaphysics and medicine have had great influence on Islamic culture as well as on the West. Less known in the West are his logical works, as only his treatise on Porphyry`s Isagoge was translated into Latin. A translation of Avicenna`s `commentary` on Aristotle`s On Interpretation, Al-`Ib r , is given here: the first in a Western language. Avicenna does not paraphrase the text but instead comments upon what the correct doctrines are. He offers original doctrines on such topics as predication, the logical square of opposition, and future contingents. Avicenna uses and refers to these doctrines in his scientific works. This translation will contribute to a better understanding of Avicenna`s overall philosophy. ····· 10361202080

Where cognitive authority is closely bound up with concepts such science and rationality, the concept of deontic authority can be used to analyse and make precise notions such as freedom, tolerance and anarchism and the concept is shown to be indispensable to the analysis of the concept of a free society. The analytic method which runs through all the studies here collected proves its worth particularly in the author`s highly original studies of social and economic institutions such as the university and the industrial concern. Bochenski`s philosophy of the industrial enterprise in particular establishes results and lines of inquiry which will be of importance to future research. Two of the contributions concern themselves with the relation of philosophy to Weltanschauung and religion providing analyses which are seen by the author as a prolegomena to a still to be written major work in the philosophy of religion. The volume includes also a study of the much-discussed problem of animal experiments, the author proposing a general framework of discussions resting on a new and fruitful application of decision theory. The studies published in this volume are written not by a social scientist but by a logician and a methodologist. Thus they are characterized both by conceptual clarity and by methodological precision. But they are rare in the field of social philosophy. Die Lehre der `proprietates terminorum`

····· lezzter Preis 78.00€ ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
The present volume is a detailed and original study of the traditional, doctrine of terms. It can be regarded as an attempt to tackle the question: ,How would the scholastic philosophers have conceived and defended their doctrine bad they bad at their disposal the methods and techniques of contemporary logic and semantics The answer provided, a systematic reconstruction of a number of important ideas in the history of logic, is both formally illuminating and entirely faithful to the relevant text. The work begins with a general exposition of the doctrine of terns oriented around the basic semantic opposition between significatio and suppositio, analogues of the more familiar notions of sense and reference. As a means of providing a precise and coherent reconstruction of the doctrine the author does not simply provide the predictable translation of the more amenable passages into the language of predicate logic. Rather he develops, on the basis of a careful systematization of the texts themselves, a formalization of his own, incorporating an ontology of substance and accident. The advantages of this approach are revealed in its capacity to provide both a simple reconstruction of syllogistic logic by means of a sequent-calculus and a natural extension of this logic to a theory of supposition. Taking into consideration the categories of substance and accident in place of the more usual apparatus of set and element allows the author to develop a formalized theory of objects in which the two categories are allowed to yield composite objects of various sorts. This makes possible an illuminating application of the theory of concreta and abstracta (square of permutations) both to the theory of ampliatio and appellatio and to modal syllogistics. The work concludes with a sketch of possible further developments and an attempted demonstration of the philosophical relevance of the theory in the light of a critical consideration of the relevant secondary literature. The logical analysis of definite generic sentence like `The lion is a beast of prey` and ,,The lion is a species`, runs into deep-rooted difficulties, the causes and solutions of which are still not agreed upon by logicians a linguists. The notions of genus and species - and with them generic descriptions - have indeed been of little interest to modern logic, though they can look back on an important earlier tradition. For where the logical analysis of so called-definite descriptions has been one of the leading themes of analytic philosophy, the use of the definite article in generic descriptions has been ignored or pushed aside as an unclear use of language. The present study provides, first, a brief historical survey of the logical analysis of generic reference. Second, the problems met by the analysis of definite generics are made more precise. Third, after classifying definite generic and discussing recent contributions to the analysis of generic reference, a proposal for a logical reconstruction of the notion is presented that combines elements of traditional logic with modern formal semantics. On Mach`s Theories

Robert Musil is best known in the English-speaking world for his multi-volume chronicle of Imperial Austria, The Man Without Qualities. What is less well known is that Musil had at one stage in his life considered embarking upon a career as a philosopher, and his doctoral dissertation, here translated into English for the first tine, represents the outcome of five years of study in Berlin under the philosopher and psychologist Carl Stumpf. The Man Without Qualities has sometimes been described as the one truly significant positivist novel. From the standpoint of the critique of Machian positivism which is contained in the present work, however, the novel must be conceived in a different light. For whilst Musil, like the positivists, attempts to break down the objective world into a multiplicity of subjective experiences, his notion of experience rests essentially upon the concept of structure introduced into philosophy by Stumpf, Brentano and the phenomenologists: it owes little to narrow positivist conceptions of experience as a matter of unstructured sensory impressions. But it is not only as a key to the understanding of the philosophical background of Musil`s fiction that the work will be of interest. Musil`s painstaking account of the entire corpus of Mach`s writings on epistemology and philosophy of science will make this volume useful also as a general introduction to the Machian philosophy. And as G. H. von Wright makes clear in his introduction to the volume, Musil`s own philosophy, too, is of considerable interest in its own right. Systeme der kumulativen Logik

The systems of cumulative logic treated in this book are introduced as generalisations and at the same time as extensions of the simple theory of types predication is taken to be cumulative in the sense that objects of a fixed type may be predicated of objects with arbitrary lower types, and not only, as in the case of normal simple type theory, of objects having the immediately preceding type. Formal systems of the Gentzen-sequence sort are established with appropriately generalised quantification and abstraction rules. NO cumulative logic satisfies Gentzen`s Hauptsatz (the cut-elimination theorem) But completeness theorems with respect to 5 suitable semantic can be proved. Since the type-homogenous membership relation ( of set theory can he defined in terms of cumulative predication, certain element extensions of the ,pure` Systems of cumulative logic lend themselves to the formalisation of set theory. There are natural extensions of this sort in which Zermelo`s set theory can be deduced. The consistency of these Systems is proved and decidability problems are considered At the end of the book, a special system of cumulative logic is set up with close connections to Frege`s System in his Grundgesetze der Arithmetik on the one hand, and to Quine`s New Foundations on the other. The presentation is broad enough for the book to serve as an introduction to proof theory and to the model theory of type-logics. For example, a semantic proof of the cut-elimination theorem for simple type-theory (following Prawitz) has been included. Philosophische Schriften / Werttheorie

····· lezzter Preis 160.00€ ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
This volume is the first ever collection of the writings on value theory of the great Austrian philosopher Christian von Ehrenfels. It consists principally of the monograph Werttheorie und Ethik (Value Theory and Ethics) and of the two-volume System der Werttheorie (System of Value Theory, Vol. 1: The General Theory of Values Vol II: Fundamentals of an Ethic). Appealing on the one hand to ideas of the Austrian economists (Carl Menger and his school), and on the other hand to a psychological theory of desire, Ehrenfels attempts to develop a general theory of value from the standpoint of a strict relativism. This project is worked out in its most comprehensive form in the System der Werttheorie, where, on the basis of an analysis of the psychological elements which are involved in the phenomenon of human evaluation, Ehrenfels establishes the principles of his general theory. He then goes on to demonstrate the validity of this theory in the special sphere of ethical-value phenomena. Ehrenfels investigates in particular the psychological causes of and influences upon the formation of values, adopting, in analogy with the law of change in the organic sphere, an evolutionary account of the entire domain of human evaluation. During the 40 year period in which Christian von Ehrenfels taught in the Universities of Vienna and Prague, it was problems in aesthetics which stood always in the foreground of his theoretical interests. He himself, however, published only a small number of essays on the theory of art, essays opposing the newly grown naturalistic movement in art theory, in which Ehrenfels -a dedicated follower of Richard Wagner - is concerned above all with the interpretation of musical works of art. Part I of this new edition will consist of these essays, which derive from Ehrenfels` earlier creative period (1891-1906) with a theoretical monograph on the choral drama - a topic of quite special significance to Ehrenfeis since the greater part of his own literary efforts were conceived in this medium. Part II of the edition comprises more substantial investigations in aesthetics drawn from Ehrenfels` scientific Nachlass and published here for the first time. Of the three manuscripts selected, the first served as the text of a lecture course on Wagner first delivered by Ehrenfels in Vienna in 1896. The two remaining pieces treat of general problems in aesthetics. Ehrenfels first of all discusses, in considerable detail, the manifold preconditions which must be met if an aesthetically evaluative judgment is to come about. He then goes on to deal above all with the question - which he answer in the affirmative - of the existence of absolute beauty. Written within the tradition of analytic philosophy, the present work deals with criticisms of contemporary nominalism, materialism and idealism. Realism about universals and a correspondence theory of truth are defended against the attacks of major figures such as Quine, Sellars, Goodman and Davidson. Taken together, the essays offer one of the most systematic attacks on nominalism and defenses of realism in recent philosophical literature. The realistic account of predication involves theories of truth and reference that are derived from the work of Russell, Moore, Wittgenstein and Bergmann. The essays also present critical analyses of major themes in the writings of Frege and Carnap. The accounts of predication, reference and truth provide a basis for an analysis of thought and intentionality, as wall as a framework for considering the problems posed by logical concepts, negation, false belief, facts, and possibilities. Russell`s account of reference, description, logical form, and identity arc considered in detail, as are Quine`s uses of Russellian themes to defend his conception of ontological commitment and his view of proper names. Criticisms of Russell`s account of reference and description and alternative accounts, offered by Strawson and others, are critically evaluated. The essays concentrate on ontological issues behind fundamental problems in the philosophy of logic and language. Taken together they present an interrelated and systematic attempt to resolve the ontological problems posed by reference, predication, and truth.
