An attempt has been made to correlate arrival instant of velocity pulse with a few seismological and pulse parameters. To assess the effect of velocity pulse arrival on seismic response of structures, a series of oscillator with different hysteretic behaviour is considered. The results of nonlinear time-history analyses indicate that the late arriving pulse motions impose high ductility demand on SDOF systems in the long period region. A similar study with eight steel moment-resisting frames revealed that the effect of pulse arrival on the response of frame members depends upon the frame height and the member location. Similar results are obtained when the effect of velocity pulse arrival on the seismic response of acceleration sensitive nonstructural components is considered. The results obtained in this study will help the engineering community in deciding safety factors for design of structures/nonstructural components in near-fault region. ····· 1036121371

The sustainment of drug release was effected by drug-polymer ratio and method of preparation. The analysis by spectral techniques (FT-IR, FT-NMR) suggested possibility of hydrogen bonding. The results of DSC, XRD and SEM studies revealed the reduction in crystallinity of pure drug in solid dispersions as compared to their physical mixtures. The results of solubility studies were in accordance with the in vitro release profile and the order of sustainment of drug release was found in rank order of 0.1 N HCl (pH 1.2) double distilled water phosphate buffer (pH 7.4). The results of adsorption studies indicated that Eudragit RLPO had greater capacity to adsorb drug as compared to Eudragit RS100 in phosphate buffer (pH 7.4). The content homogeneity of PHC in granule was very high, as all the components in solid dispersions were dispersed and mixed on the molecule level. The infiltration leads to the decrease of suction and hence causes the reduction in shear strength of the soil. On the other hand, evaporation dries the soil mass which invariably increases suction resulting in increasing the shear strength of the soil and the factor of safety of the slope. This book presents the results of a study on the combined effect of these two processes on suction distribution and the slope stability. Analysis was carried out using 1-year data representing a site at Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Soil samples were collected and relevant data, that is, soil water characteristics curve (SWCC), hydraulic conductivity curve, and shear strength parameters were gained through interpretation of laboratory test results. Transient seepage analyses were carried out using commercial finite element software (SEEP/W).Residual water content was assigned at the beginning of all analyses. The pore-water pressure distributions obtained from these analyses were transported to SLOPE/W where the factor of safety of the slope for the afore mentioned cases were determined. ····· 1036121164

It is clear that this design method strongly depends on actual mechanical properties of materials. The possibility that the actual yield strength of steel is higher than the nominal yield strength in dissipative zones should be taken into account by a material overstrength factor for the design of non-dissipative zones. In spite of the fact that this point is essential in seismic design, the value to be given to this overstrength factor varies in the provisions of different standards. Moreover, these standards don t provide adequate limitations on mechanical properties for steel products even if it should be directly related to the overstrength factor chosen. For these reasons, this work aimed to define suitable harmonised rules and recommendations for production standards and structural regulations for steel-concrete composite structures located at earthquake-prone areas. ····· 1036121132

It is a combinatorial optimization problem, where a limited amount of resources are to be allocated to certain number of competitive events in order to achieve the most effective allotment of the resources. Although the properties of an RAP can help in characterizing another RAP, different RAPs are usually studied independently without exploring the similarities among them. Therefore, with the aim of exploring the similarities among different types of RAPs, two versions of NSGA-II, a well-known multi-objective evolutionary algorithm, are developed as the solution techniques for two challenging RAPs of quite different natures, namely the university class timetabling problem and the land-use management problem. Once the performance baseline is defined and instantiated, the challenge during the development, production, and utilization life cycle phases is to affordably sustain the physical system baseline. This baseline continuously evolves in response to external influences such as frequent and asynchronous obsolescence of system elements, changing requirements (mission needs, schedule and funding), and changing policy and regulations (i.e. security, export laws and safety standards). This research specifically addresses the impact of asynchronous obsolescence of system elements on overall system effectiveness and cost during its operational and support life cycle phases. An overview of a system obsolescence forecasting model, se-Fly Fisher, is detailed. This model uses technology curves of individual system elements (actual parts) for an understanding of obsolescence at the lowest level. The se-Fly Fisher model provides tactical insight of HOW often the system baseline should change, WHAT elements must change and HOW MUCH performance potential is realized. ····· 1036120866

This research focused on comparison of effective shear strength parameters (c`, `) that obtained from both Consolidated Undrain (CU) and Consolidated Drain(CD) triaxial tests for remoulded residual soil (silt). This study presents a reduction factor that helps to evaluate the effective internal friction angle of CD test from the results of CU triaxial test. Crystallization from the vapor phase is an important method for the preparation of semiconductors, insulators and metals. Therefore, it is crucial that the mechanism of thin film growth be understood. Unfortunately, this is not the case and developments in thin films have been made mostly by trial and error, and explained using an outdated mechanism. Generally, the mechanism of thin film deposition by CVD/PVD is considered a surface reaction with atoms and/or reactive species produced in the gas phase of the reaction chamber. Gas phase nucleation is generally considered a detriment to thin film quality, and engineers tend to assume that this process does not occur to a significant extent under ordinary thin film deposition conditions. An alternative mechanism, the charged cluster model, suggests instead that a thin film is a three dimensional assembly of charged nanoparticles that nucleated in the gas phase. This book shows that the charged cluster model applies to metal thin film deposition by thermal evaporation. ····· 1036120259

This book presents analytical solutions based on the inverse hodograph and Schwarz-Christoffel conformal transformation for computing seepage from polygon and curvilinear canals. These solutions have been simplified as explicit algebraic equations. The construction cost of network of canals constitutes a major cost item in an irrigation project and that should be minimized. Such a minimum cost canal design problem results in a non-linear objective function and a non-linear equality constraint, making the problem hard to solve analytically. A nonlinear optimization method has been applied to different shapes of canals and subsequently generalized explicit equations and section shape coefficients have been found through error minimization for the design of minimum cost canal sections. The analysis overcomes the complexity of the seepage from canals and minimum cost design of irrigation canal sections and thus the book should be useful to students, teachers, researchers and professionals interested in fields of canal design and operations. ····· 1036120099

The reports of damage observed pointed out the key importance of beam-to-column joints on the global performance of RC frames. Several theoretical and analytical formulations have been proposed for evaluating the shear strength of beam-to-column joints. The present work deals with the formulations for evaluating the shear strength of exterior and interior connections currently available in both the scientific literature and the main seismic codes. The comparison between the experimental results collected in a wide database and the theoretical shear strength is made for assessing the presented models. The models have been recalibrated and the relevant coefficients describing the average error and the dispersion of the models have been evaluated. The finite volume based shock-capturing methods are used to discretize the governing equations. The one-dimensional and two-dimensional equations are solved implicitly using Newton-Raphson method for each time step. The two-dimensional model is implemented on unstructured quadrilateral as well as triangular grids. Applications and accuracy of the models are investigated using the experimental data and the previous numerical results available in the literature. The models are also validated by simulating tidal variations in a small stretch of the River Hooghly, India. A coupled model is also demonstrated and tested. In this approach, the river flow is considered to be one-dimensional and the floodplain flow as quasi two-dimensional. The two models are coupled considering only the mass flux and neglecting the momentum flux. The coupled model is applied to a small reach of River Thames, UK to predict the extent of inundation due to a real flood event and the results are compared with that derived from satellite imagery. ····· 1036119354

Constructing a water level control structure in a river reach will increase the water depths, decrease the velocities and increase the groundwater table. These changes in the river hydraulics will impact the water quality of the river, its thermal regime and the fish that dwell in it. A mathematical model was developed to simulate the hydraulics, water quality, pollution transport in the river, temperature regime and fish habitat. The study and results showed that water level control structures have negative impacts on the upstream self-assimilative capacity of the rivers, but they have a positive impact on the DO concentrations in the downstream side due to the reaeration that happens across them. The structures also have a positive impact on the fish. As for the temperature regime it was slightly affected by the existence of the control structure. The book should be especially helpful to professionals or anyone else interested in the field of hydraulics, water quality and water environment. ····· 1036119351
