Dual System of Education and Poverty Persistence

The Pakistan National Education Policy of 1999 lamented that there was an almost a caste-like distinction between those who feel at ease in expressing themselves in formal and those who do not. This situation continues to exist and is a product of the country`s education system, which appears to suffer from a kind of `educational apartheid`. There are two broad streams of education, characterized basically by the medium of instruction and philosophy of school of thought. One stream uses English and imparts secular or modern education and the other uses Urdu, Arabic and Persian which provide religious education. English-medium schools can be further divided into two broad categories. First, `elite` schools run by missionary or other institutions, and private schools that charge at least a four-figure monthly tuition fee per child and whose total education costs per child can even approach five figures. And second, `non-elite` private schools that charge up to a three figure monthly tuition per child. But the philosophy and objective behind this system is similar. Urdu-medium educational institutions can also be classified into two broad categories. ····· 1036120443

Protectors and Interpreters of the Australian Outback

This book examines the emergence of the occupation of the ecotour guide as part of an expanding service economy. Qualitative methods, using participant observation and open ended, in-depth interviewing techniques, were used for the generation of insights and theory from the data. From a sociological perspective, it is apparent that these tour guides provide an informed, interpretive guided ecotourism experience in the Australian outback. Their interpretive facts are acquired from life experience in the bush. They are workers in an industry that, in some instances, offers little reward or return for extreme working conditions. This study explores salient issues related to the perceived professionalisation of a collective group of tourism business individuals called Savannah Guides. The guides philosophy is based on a collective sense of identity and recognition as an exclusive ecotourism organisation. This has been used as a means of positioning themselves in the competitive ecotourism market. This work details the guides way of life as individuals within the Savannah Guides organisation and the ecotourist industry. ····· 1036120265

The concept of development-induced-displacement is not new in Indian context. However, the topic has received wider academic and policy attentions in the past three decades in the country. Researchers argue that both women and men experience the development process and its positive and negative outcomes differently whereas the policy concentration is on the formulation of an egalitarian development programme for all sections of India. This dissertation analyses the differential DID impacts on both men and women of indigenous communities and the existing gaps in the Indian Government s rehabilitation and resettlement programmes. Why and how the indigenous community is different from others and why does DID impacts their lives and livelihoods differently has been discussed throughout this work. ····· 1036120218

Constructing Older Workers and Retirement

Today, against the backdrop of the demographic pressures to delay the retirement of older workers, sociologists of aging and gerontologists have begun exploring the impact of national labor market institutions on individual workers` experiences of aging and growing older at the workplace and in the labor market at large. This book has contributed to the literature by demonstrating that, with its persistent mandatory retirement policies, the lifetime employment institution in Japan serves as an intensive age-based social control mechanism that has constructed and reproduced `older workers` in the country`s labor force. Based on empirical research findings, this book argues that the Japanese government should find ways to mitigate the social exclusion, marginalization, and stigmatization that workers experience in their post-mandatory retirement working lives. ····· 1036120085

Ageing and Old Age

This book addresses salient social dynamics that influence the living conditions of the ageing and the aged in Kenya. It analyses the social aspects critical to living experience of the aged in the family, community and society at large. The book discusses problems of the aged, societal attitudes, how the family as a basic institution of care and living copes with the aged in a changing society, gendered nature of old age experience and status of government policies toward the welfare of the aged. Dr. Masinde argues that the common assumption that the aged in Africa are respected and living comfortable lives is not valid. In this regard, through qualitative analysis, he explains how the changing family, community and societal dynamics has influenced the living conditions of the aged. Therefore, he recommends the re-engineering of African traditional family values within the context of a fast changing and globalised world. This book is a must-read for students of gerontology and ageing studies and social practioners interested in issues of ageing and the aged in society. ····· 1036120028

Violence against Women in Pakistan

für 71.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Multiple perspectives explain causative factors of violence against women that are popularly identified as: i) radical feminism-challenging male dominance rooted in patriarchal structures of society ii) socialist feminism-situating women s vulnerability to male violence in their economic dependence on men and iii) post-modern feminism-attributing violence against women to multiple causative factors. This study stands on the confluence of these multiple perspectives. Unlike single dimension approaches of radical and socialist feminism, it focused on multidimensional causation of violence against women. Presumably, perpetration of physical violence against women is necessarily a relational phenomenon and its prevalence may vary with varying types of interpersonal relations of men with women. Mainly, it focused on finding out answers to the questions: i) how do men define their relations with women ii) how does a complex interplay of multiple factors characterize their relations with women and iii) how do the different relations of men with women predict differential propensity of perpetrating physical violence against women in Pakistani households, both rural and urban. ····· 1036120018

Migrant Women in Britain Legal Rights, Cultural Constraints?

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
In the eyes of most modern legal systems today men and women are equal and are given equal rights. As a result, the contemporary woman has many rights that were denied her ancestors. Though the modern woman has more doors open to her - resulting in more freedom of choice - dilemmas still exist between her `traditional` and `modern` roles for which she has to make decisions on a day to day basis. This struggle between what is expected of her traditionally and what she has the possibility and legal rights to do, though present in the lives of all women in some degree or another, is more evident when the woman is put into a setting in which her culture and the law of the land are quite different from one another. Such is the case of women who have moved to Great Britain from Islamic countries, resulting in an encounter with a different culture and the gaining of a new legal status. Supposing new legal rights bring more freedom of choice, what could prevent a migrant woman from exercising a right that is hers The answer to this question lies in culture and cultural identity. ····· 1036119997

This study attempts to give a critical review of the debates on how the citizenship was constructed in Turkey. While doing this the late Ottoman period and the republican era have been examined. It has been observed that the concept of Turkish citizenship started to take its form in a traditional manner, but the evolution of the idea of constitutional citizenship took place in the early 1980s. It has also been found that the role of the state tradition has been strong throughout of history of Ottoman Empire as well as Republic of Turkey. The passive character of Turkish citizenship has been also noted. In addition to the point above, the ethno-secular borders were dealt with to see whether different elements of society were included or not. It has been claimed that the democratic struggles after the 1980s have helped to activate the passive character of the traditional form of Turkish citizenship in terms of inclusion. Also, it was seen that the parameters of change in this form of Turkish citizenship have resulted in development of new ideas of citizenship, including European citizenship started to be discussed with the process of Turkey`s candidacy for European Union membership. ····· 1036119859

The study examines the recent transformations of integration policies and citizenship laws in Germany with a special focus on the experience of Turkish youth in Goslar. It argues that the conditions and restrictions differentiated by different migrant categories and rights regarding entry, family reunification, welfare benefits, and labor market access go along with a particular legal status of those admitted migrants create hierarchy of stratified rights. This work suggests that the nature of the citizenship in Germany remains deeply `differentiated`, `exclusive` and `hierarchical`. Turkish youth have experienced downward integration and their upward integration is yet limited in Germany regarding labor market and education. The youth also continue the celebration of ancestral origins of their religion and ethnicity, though in reactionary ways. Today, the question for the next generation Turks is not whether integration will take place, but to what extent and to what segment of German society will integrate them.In other words, for Turkish youth, the question is no longer whether to stay or return but how to secure permanent spaces for their intercultural skills and identities. ····· 1036119658

Bangladesh has made significant progress in women s health and wellness since it adopted the ICPD (International Conference on Population and Development). Realizing the importance of safe motherhood for a healthy and prosperous nation, various government and non-government organizations have been working hard to provide health-care to women at all socio-economic levels in Bangladesh. However, a large number of women are not utilizing the services that may be available to them. Moreover, creating awareness among rural women has been identified as a difficult task. Eliciting data from hard-to-reach female population in a rural area of Bangladesh, Shirina Aktar describes women s health care seeking behaviors for safe motherhood. Aktar shows how women s socio-economic status and a lack of appropriate knowledge influence their care seeking behaviors. This is an analysis of flank and shift effects in political sociology that focuses on migrant parties in eight European countries. In a positive radical flank effect the radical party makes the moderate and mildly-threatening parties look good. In turn, that moderate party then gains power or at least many of their ends. A negative radical flank effect occurs when the actual or perceived association of the moderate party with the radical party causes the moderate party to lose support. Radical shift effects are when the moderate or conservative party shifts its policy toward the radical direction. In this case, the radical party may become a coalition partner with the moderate or conservative party. And conservative or moderate shift is when the radical party shifts its policy toward a more moderate direction in order to assume power or court votes. ····· 1036119588

The Cross-border Impact of Refugees

Our contemporary world has become a theatre of fratricidal conflicts and violence, which are not only decimating people and their rights, but also forcing many people to become refugees, leading to cross-border effects that have implications for peace and security. The natural, economic and cultural resources of these people are also being destroyed. Refugees are entitled to their fundamental human rights to live with dignity and in peace in their native countries. It is a fact and a reality that more than half of the refugee population of the world is in Africa, especially in the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes Region (GLR). Refugees flee from their independent African countries because of instability, fear of secession, opposition, criticism, political rivalry and frequent violation of human rights. Political instability and dissatisfaction make many people to move out of their countries and to become refugees. In other words, refugees are not the problem, but rather the victims of intra-state and inter-state conflicts and wars created by conditions of extreme failure of state governance and institutions intended to safeguard democracy. ····· 1036119447
