Its impact far exceeds the phenomenal discoveries of antibiotics and any modern surgical advances. Beaches in the Isle of Man and Cambois in the Northeast of England were designated as sites for the study of the impacts of sewage discharges from marine outfalls on the aesthetics and bacteriological quality of beaches/bathing waters. Aesthetic studies showed beaches littered with sewage derived debris, (SDD) considerably worse after heavy rainfall. The presence of SDD such as faeces, sanitary wear, floating debris, unsightly surface slicks, and discoloration are the most important features associated in the public mind with sewage pollution. Liquid and floatable solid wastes discharged at any level under seawater rise to the surface and strong winds override tidal currents in determining their direction/dispersion. Fresh sewage discharged from marine outfalls returned to pollute the study beaches/bathing waters within three hours of discharge. Culture-based enumeration methods estimated total populations of bacteria in bathing/offshore seawater samples. Total coliform and E.coli densities in bathing water samples exceeded the UK EC mandatory standards. Quantitative Rhodamine-wt tracer Dye concentrations could not be used to accurately model the dispersion of sewage bacteria in the marine environment. ····· 10361118036

Two decades following the introduction of antibiotics, the medical community began to see a disturbing trend. Bacterial infections that were once treatable no longer responded to antibiotics. Over the next decade our antibacterial arsenal will begin to fail at an ever increasing rate. Epidemiologists now warn of epidemic diseases that are not treatable by modern means. But it turns out that herbal medicines, those most ancient of human helpers, are effective against antibiotic resistant bacteria for they are much more complex than antibiotics and bacteria cannot develop resistance to them.Hence to overcome the odds posed by antibiotics and other means allopathic medicine, plant resources seems to be only solution. Infections with thisleading pathogen are characterized by biofilmdevelopment on devices (heart valves, catheters, contact lenses, etc.) and this factor is consideredthe main virulence mechanism of S. epidermidis.Biofilm cells are organised into structuredcommunities enclosed within a matrix of extracellularmaterial. These cells are phenotypically differentfrom planktonic or suspended cells notably, theyresist host defences and display a significantlydecreased susceptibility to antimicrobial agents.Since biofilm-associated infections are frequentlyresistant to conventional antimicrobial therapy, thework presented in this book aimed at studying newtherapeutic strategies for treatment and control ofinfections caused by S. epidermidis. ····· 10361117944

Three selected rhodococcal P450s were characterized with microbiological, genetic, biochemical, spectroscopic and chromatographical methods. Two sterol C26- hydroxylases were demonstrated to be important for 3- hydroxysterol degradation. The role of the novel dextromethorphan N-demethylase in sterol metabolism was discussed. Furthermore, heterologous production of a mutated P450 enzyme, from `Bacillus megaterium`, was shown in an engineered `Rhodococcus` strain. The activity of the mutated P450 was identified as 16 -hydroxylase of 4- androstene-3,17-dione, by ¹H and ¹³C NMR. Antigen receptor signaling that leads to inhibition of E2A by the calcium-sensor protein calmodulin (CaM) has therefore very broad implications. The down- regulation of the surrogate light chains of the pre-B cell receptor and also the co-receptor CD19 was shown to be through CaM inhibition of E2A. Furthermore, several components of the Ig recombination machinery including RAG1 and RAG2 are down-regulated by this mechanism, and the recombination complex was shown to include the RAGs, Pax5 and E2A, which can be directly released from the Ig heavy chain locus by pre-B cell receptor signaling through CaM to achieve allelic exclusion. The tight regulation of the antibody diversification enzyme AID is also dependent on CaM inhibition of E2A, and a negative feedback regulation of the pre-B and B cell receptor proteins and co-receptors and proteins in signal pathways from the receptor was also shown to occur through E2A inhibition by CaM.
