Of only the four extant species, two are known from the eastern cost of the Indian region and because of their unique morphological similarities with the fossil, Mesolimulus walchi they are called `living fossils`. They play an important ecological role in the food web. A decline in its population will exert serious impact on other species. The biomedical industry produces a valuable substance known as ameboecyte lysate from the blood of horseshoe crabs. This substance is used to test a variety of biomedical products, vaccines and many other live saving drugs for the presence of endotoxins or any bacterial contamination. Our findings highlight the existence of metabolic lipid alterations associated with prion infection. A higher content of cholesterol esters (CE) was accompanied by variations in the expression of ACAT-1 and Cav-1 in skin fibroblasts from scrapie-susceptible sheep. Increased levels and altered distribution of free cholesterol (FC), triglycerides, phospholipids and CEs were found in prion-infected N2a cells (ScN2a). Similar cholesterol alterations were observed in brains of Pravastatin-treated and untreated scrapie-infected mice: a high level of cholesteryl-arachidonate was associated with increased CEs in the brain while oral pravastatin administration caused a significant reduction of FC and an additional increase of CEs. In addition, the treatment with dual-drug combinations of a cholesterol ester modulator with a prion inhibitor had showed a synergistic anti-prion effect in ScN2a cells. These data support our hypothesis that certain pathways of cholesterol/cholesterol ester metabolism may represent suitable targets for prion disease therapy. ····· 1036188080

The curative effect of chronic eczema relies on the expansion of myeloid derived suppressor cells (MDSC) which can suppress the autoreactive T-cells and induces apoptosis of these via mitochondrial apoptotic pathway. Alternatively, a blockade of accessory molecules in T-cell activation could possibly be of therapeutic benefit. CD44 and CD49d being candidate accessory molecules since association of CD44 with CD49d plays an important role in homing of lymphocytes and blockade of these bystander pathways could be a therapeutic approach in alopecia areata. ····· 1036188047

According to Fuzheng Guben , one of the major TCM therapeutic principles, Ganoderma lucidum (Gl) is capable of strengthening body resistance and improving constitutive homeostasis in patients (Lin, 2001). The name Ganoderma is derived from the Greek ganos/ `brightness, sheen`, hence `shining` and derma/ `skin`, while the specific epithet lucidum in Latin for `shining` and tsugae refers to being of the Hemlock (Tsuga). Another Japanese name is mannentake, meaning `10 000 year mushroom` (Liddell et al., 1980). The genus Ganoderma was named by Karsten in 1881. The fish, Clarias gariepinus was exposed to lethal concentrations of the effluent for 96 hours and the (96-h LC50) value for the acute toxicity was found to be 0.30mg/L. Mortality of exposed fishes increased as the concentrations of the effluent increases. The impact of long term exposure to the effluent was also evaluated through changes of biochemical and haematological parameters as well as the assessment of heavy metal bioaccumulation in selected biomarkers. It was concluded that fish can bioaccumulate heavy metals from polluted environments. The chemical additives effluent had some degree of negative impact on the biochemistry, haematology and metal bioaccumulation pattern of Clarias gariepinus. In the present work four earthworm species viz. Metaphire posthuma, Lampito mauritii, Eisenia foetida and Perionyx excavatus were studied to find the most predominant gut bacteria species. Besides aiding in composting, these bacteria were also found to increase the yield of the common Indian vegetables. One of these bacteria has significant role on speedier germination of seeds. In sexual reproduction, Meiotic division produces gametes of half ploidy and fertilization restores original chromosome number. In the meiosis sister chromatids are monoorientated which leads to separation of homologous chromosomes. This is followed by separation of sister chromatid in meiosis II because of biorientation of sister chromatids. Comparison of meiosis with mitosis reveals that monoorientation of sister chromatids is the main reason for halving the ploidy. According to the present hypothesis, Monopolin complex, A four subunit complex, directs monopolar attachment of sister chromatids. Present study is done to reveal the nature and function of this complex. Cell cycle arrest mutants were created and verified to maximize the number of cells at particular stage by deleting or shuffling the promoter of a particular gene. Then, Csm1 subunit of monopolin complex was affinity tagged and verified in arrested cells. As future prospects of this work affinity purification of Csm1 can be done. An important goal for this work is the isolation of stem cell populations to replace missing or nonfunctioning cells. Because problems of immune rejection a desirable strategy is to convert differentiated cells from patients into immature tailored stem cell populations. Reprogramming differentiated cells towards pluripotency can be achieved by different experimental strategies including the forced expression of specific inducers and nuclear transfer. While these offer unparalleled opportunities to generate stem cells and advance disease modelling, the relatively low levels of successful reprogramming achieved makes a direct analysis of the molecular events associated with productive reprogramming very challenging. The generation of transient heterokaryons between human differentiated cells (such as lymphocytes) and mouse pluripotent stem cell lines developed by Carlos Filipe R. L. This work is motivated by the current difficulties in identifying practical bio-system models. In the field of systems biology, available data are often noisy, sparse and expensive to collect. Therefore, system identification is a challenging problem. A major task of identifying a model, as described in terms of non-linear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with indeterminate parameters, can be formulated into an optimization problem. It is a reverse engineering exercise to reconstruct the system model via various numerical tools like constraint-mixed-optimization algorithms and approximations. Due to sensitivity issues, in many cases, even the simulated output data, as generated by the identified model with a set of estimated parameters, fit very well with the measured data, it is still important to infer how well these model parameters being determined which is essential for the investigation of model construction. For this reason, the identifiability issues, which is an important practical issue, is also treated. ····· 1036187553
