Terapia fotodinámica: estudios In Vitro e In Vivo

····· 10361136205

Population genetics of a vertebrate metacommunity

für 61.20€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Population genetic structure is widespread in many organisms and can be found at small spatial scales. Population genetic differentiation is an evolutionary precursor to speciation and can have a significant impact on the microevolutionary dynamics of a region. Levels of divergence, in turn, are determined by numerous ecological and evolutionary factors operating on multiple spatial and temporal scales, including spatial heterogeneity, population size and dispersal. My dissertation uses microsatellite markers to investigate the population genetic structure of three vertebrate species that coexist on a common landscape and share ecological predator-prey and competition interactions. I then identify ecological and evolutionary processes important in shaping the observed patterns within a comparative framework. Finally, I explore evolutionary processes that shape adaptive divergence in one of the species, by comparing levels of population differentiation at quantitative traits and neutral molecular markers among ecotypes. ····· 10361136047

Weedy Setaria Seed Life History

für 71.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
This book is the story of the search to discover the biological basis of seed behavior in the weedy Setaria species-group. It consists of seven chapters, five experimental, a concluding essay and an introduction. The first two are from studies by Milt Haar. In the first, stable and plastic seed productivity behaviors are studied in terms of plant architecture. In the second, the structure of seed dormancy (seed heteroblasty) is elucidated. In the next three by Kari Jovaag (based on field experimental work by Brad Atchison), seed heteroblasty defines the evolutionary ecological role this complex functional trait plays in determining seedling emergence. In the third article seed heteroblasty in several populations is defined. In the fourth article, the role seed heteroblasty plays in the annual cycling of germinability-dormancy in soil seed pools is described. In the final of this series, seedling emergence (pattern and magnitude) of the populations studied is presented. The conclusion of this work is that the number and quality of the seed produced during embryogenesis is the predicate, the blueprint, for seedling recruitment timing and extent. ····· 10361135985

Mechanisms of Ultraviolet Radiation Induced Immune Suppression

Ultraviolet Radiation (UV) has been shown to suppress immunological parameters in both animal models and humans. It has been postulated that this UV induced immune suppression may lead to an increase in susceptibility to infectious diseases and allow the outgrowth of transformed tumours leading to the development of skin cancer. The aim of the research presented in this book was to further understand the mechanisms of UV induced immune suppression in both mice and humans. The research focuses on the role of urocanic acid, cytokines, and wavelength interactions and examines their involvement in UV mediated immune suppression. This book is essentially the publication of a PhD thesis and would appeal to research scientists, clinicians and students working in the field of photoimmunology or skin biology. ····· 10361135745

Identification and Characterization of Complex Biological Signals

Our work is a contribution towards understanding the biology of mobile genetic elements (MGE). These constitute a significant proportion of most eukaryotic genomes. We demonstrate the presence of signals at the sites where mobile genetic elements preferentially insert in several genomes. These signals have been mapped into a general machine learning protocol. A web enabled computational protocol for the analysis of mobile genetic elements and their insertion sites, and a resource base containing several genomes, termed ELAN has been developed. This suite of tools for analysis and a relational database which contains over several hundred gigabytes of information are in the public domain. MGE insert strategically, selecting their sites carefully without disrupting exonic regions in the human genome but insert multiple copies in intronic as well as intergenic regions. A study was conducted for 21 days of pre-composting and 49 days of vermicomposting under laboratory condition by using earthworm (Lumbricus rubellus). Three different combination of treatments were prepared with eight replicates for each treatment, namely cow dung : kitchen waste in 30:70 ratio (T1), cow dung : coffee grounds in 30:70 ratio (T2), and cow dung : kitchen waste : coffee grounds in 30:35:35 ratio (T3) were used for this study. By comparing the numbers and weights of earthworms in each treatment, only T2 indicated significant difference (p 0.05) which it can be concluded that coffee grounds influenced the development of earthworms population. Nutrient elements in the vermicompost from each treatment were measured and relatively showed high percentage in C, N, P, K, Ca, and Na. Contrast for Mg and other micronutrient elements, the result showed small percentage in Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn, B, and crude fat. The data reveals that coffee grounds can be decomposed through vermicomposting by using Lumbricus rubellus into value-added material. With the correct ratio and suitable condition of kitchen waste, coffee grounds can also be used as stabilizer in vermicomposting. ····· 10361135713

The Evolution of Color Vision

Anthropologists earlier believed the tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri) to be a close relative of primates and classified the species in the prosimian suborder. Although that classification has now been questioned, the tree shrew undoubtedly represents a pivotal chapter in the natural history of the evolution of the brain. With its cone dominated retina, this animal is capable of carrying out color discrimination under isoluminant conditions (i.e. where hue alone is the cue). Unlike primates, it is capable of doing so even after ablation of the primary visual cortex. This book purports to be an electrophysiological examination of the functional architecture and integrative circuitry required for color vision in both the visual cortex and subcortical structures. It is, thus, a contribution to the study of the evolution of color vision -a topic which not only concerns Psychologists but is increasingly the focus of much attention among Philosophers. ····· 10361135669

Electrical remodeling is a persistent change in the electrophysiological properties of myocardium in response to a change in rate or activation sequence. Although it is well established that alterations in heart rate or activation sequence induce electrical remodeling in atria, heart rate and activation sequence-induced electrical remodeling in ventricle are poorly understood. This research shows that persistent changes in ventricular repolarization can be induced by surprisingly short periods of altered rate or activation sequence, and the nature of ventricular electrical remodeling induced by these two protocols is different. This research suggests a novel mechanism for triggering electrical remodeling in ventricle. ····· 10361134187

Reticulocytosis as a Surrogate Marker of Recent Pf Malaria Infection

Reticulocytosis is an important previously unappreciated surrogate marker of recent Plasmodium falciparum reticulocyte parasitation. Evidence from studies in murine and primate models show increased prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum parasitisation of reticulocytes. The increase in reticulocyte infection has been attributed to compensatory reticulocytosis and increased parasite densities. However, the prevalence of P. falciparum parasitisation of reticulocytes in human populations in holoendemic areas of malaria is unknown. Therefore, the current study examined the prevalence of P. falciparum parasitation of reticulocytes and its association with clinical, parasitological and haematological outcomes in children and adults with acute P. falciparum malaria and healthy malaria -ve controls from a holoendemic area of malaria of western Kenya. Results of this study demonstrate higher prevalence of reticulocyte parasitation in children. Thus, it seems likely that P. falciparum reticulocyte parasitation leads to a burst in compensatory reticulocytosis in acute paediatric malaria predictable by HDP and a febrile illness among children ····· 10361134089
