Young medical students have to confront significant amount of stress throughout their career which affects their physical as well as mental health. Rate of depression & suicides have been found to be higher in medical students than in other graduate students. How a student handle a stressful situation depends on his or her personality. Type D personality is based on the two stable personality traits of negative affect & social inhibition. Persons with Type D personality are at increased risk for developing depression and other psychiatric disorders. A total of 295 medical students (226 male & 69 female) are included in this study to determine prevalence of depression & type D personality among medical students of Midnapore Medical College, West Bengal to find out whether they have any significant association or not. CHINNA REDDY PALEM

Over the decades, peroral delivery has been the popular route of administration for the majority of therapeutic agents targeting systemic delivery. Oral administration generally leads to extensive presystemic elimination, which may include GI degradation, metabolism, or first-pass clearance via the liver. Transmucosal drug delivery offers attractive alternative routes for administration of drugs and may avoid the significant drawbacks of peroral and parenteral administration. These routes of administration bypass first pass metabolism by delivering drug directly into the systemic circulation. Buccal drug delivery offers several advantages over the oral route and other alternative routes of drug administration. The membranes that line the oral cavity are readily accessible, robust, and exhibit fast cellular recovery following local stress or damage and are exposed to various exogenous compounds. Properly constructed oral transmucosal drug delivery systems are easy and painless to administer and well accepted by the patient. Precise localization of the dosage form is possible and there is the ability to terminate delivery when required (e.g. because of toxicity). ····· 10361101359

Maternal mortality in Bangladesh is 320 per 100,000 live births between the years of 1998 and 2000. In Bangladesh, around 4 million women become pregnant each year and more than half million women suffered pregnancy complications. This study attempts to evaluate the levels, patterns and trends of utilization of maternal health services in Bangladesh. This is a descriptive study based on national surveys of Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS) 2004, BDHS 1999-2000, BDHS 1996-1997 and BDHS 1993-1994. Despite the gaps in access to skilled delivery, delivery at health facility, assistance sought for pregnancy complications and postnatal care, receiving antenatal care, tetanus toxoid and delivery by cesarean have made a remarkable progress. Delivery at health facility and assistance sought from medically trained providers remained resistant to change. Women sought assistance for their complications around delivery from non-medically trained providers. Very few women received postnatal care though it was a period during which most maternal deaths occurred. ····· 10361101344

New insights on osteoporosis

für 53.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Osteoporosis is widely recognized as a major public health problem. It is a serious metabolic bone disorder that often results in hip fracture and is usually asymptomatic in its initial stages. It is mainly seen in elderly people as decreased quantities of sex hormones is one important factor causing bone loss. Most patients suffering from osteoporosis are post-menopausal women exhibiting loss of estrogen. Also, menopause is associated with a substantial decline in melatonin secretion which subsequently stimulates bone resorption. Numerous drugs are approved for both the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis but with multiple side effects. This book, therefore, provides new insights for developing novel melatonin analogues containing heterocyclic moieties that could be expected to be alternative modalities for prevention and intervention of osteoporosis in ovariectomized rats as an experimental model for postmenopausal osteoporotic women. Our finding could be useful for future strategies for osteoporosis management in postmenopausal women. ····· 10361101238

Dispensing errors in hospital

There is substantial evidence from the developed world that health care provision is an industry that frequently, and, avoidably, harms vulnerable people. Over the last decade, the awareness of policy makers and health professionals about patient safety has been raised in many countries all over the world through important reports proposing recommendations for improvement. In spite of the relatively low dispensing error rates further improvements in pharmacy distribution systems are still important because pharmacies dispense such high volumes of medications that even a low error rate can translate into a large number of errors. Human error is inevitable, and organizational risk management experts have proposed the deployment of robust defense systems in the dispensing process. This monograph, reports on three separate but related dispensing error studies aimed at evaluating some of the potential causes of errors and error defense operations in the dispensing process in selected UK hospitals. ····· 10361101229

A new, simple, rapid, selective, precise and accurate isocratic RP-HPLC assay has been developed for simultaneous estimation of Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride, Ofloxacin, Tinidazole and Ornidazole in tablet formulations. The separation was achieved by using C-18 column (Phenomenax, 250 x 4.6mm i.d.) coupled with a guard column of same material, in mobile phase Acetonitrile: Water: Tri ethylamine (25:75). The pH of mobile phase was adjusted to 6.0 ± 0.1 with 50% ortho phosphoric acid. The flow rate was 1.0 mL.min-1 and the separated drugs were detected using UV detector at the wavelength of 300 nm. The retention time of Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride, Ofloxacin, Tinidazole, and Ornidazole was noted to be 2.7, 3.5, 4.5 and 5.8 min, respectively, indicative of rather shorter analysis time. The method was validated as per ICH guidelines. The proposed method was found to be accurate, reproducible, and consistent. It was successfully applied for the analysis of these drugs in marketed formulations and could be effectively used for the routine analysis of formulations containing any one of the above drugs, or a combination, without any alteration in the chromatographic conditions. ····· 10361101224

The Level of Expressed Emotion is a measure of perceived emotional climate of one`s social environment. The measure has been used in previous studies in predicting relapse in other psychological disorders. This study sought to investigate the relationship of the level of expressed emotion and the quality of life of PLWHA. The LEE scale and the WHOQOL-HIV were administered to 72 participants who were HIV positive and a control group of 43 participants who were HIV negative. The LEE scale`s four dimensions were used to establish the overall level of expressed emotion of the participants. The QOL of PLWHA was found out to be relatively higher than that of HIV negative participants. The results also indicated an inverse correlation between the LEE and the QOL that participants perceived themselves to have. Male participants were found to have higher EE than female participants and the QOL was generally low for males than females. The findings suggest that future interventions in HIV positive people should take into account their home environment and issues of care and support in their families. ····· 10361101034

Vitamin D deficiency has suggested that not only a biochemical abnormality, but is also associated with adverse effect of poor bone mineralization in growing children and adolescents. The findings of the present study clearly demonstrate that vitamin D deficiency occurs in a high proportion of adolescent girls, regardless of what 25(OH)D level is used to define vitamin D deficiency. In addition, body mass index (BMI), milk intake, participation in organized sports and total physical activity all emerged as major determinants of vitamin D status. The relationship between vitamin D status and bone mass and bone biomarkers showed that girl participants with a higher vitamin D status had significantly higher bone mass at the total body and distal and proximal forearm, and higher concentrations of IGF-I, lower concentrations of BAP and a lower urine Dpd/creatinine ratio compared to those of poor vitamin D status. Therefore, continuous participation in high physical activity, and adequate vitamin D status throughout childhood and late adolescence could help achieve maximum peak bone mass at maturity and thus reduce the risk of osteoporotic fractures later in life. ····· 10361100744

An ageing population and an increase in the prevalence of chronic diseases have led to difficult choices in allocation of limited resources. There is greater public awareness of ethical issues through media reporting and a greater demand for public accountability of health care professionals. Health care professionals need not only strive to give the best possible clinical care, but also have to consider the ethical dimensions of the care they provide. To ensure high ethical standards in patient care, individual health care professionals and health care institutions need support and advice. The author argues that clinical ethics committees serve that purpose. ····· 10361100681
