Elastic Scattering Of Heavy Ions

The differential cross-section for the elastic scattering of heavy ions like C and Si scattered from the target nuclei C, Pb, Zr, Ca, O, Si, S, Al at different projectile energies has been studied in terms of the Strong Absorption Model of Frahn and Venter using the three parameters version of this model. We find that a reasonably good description to the angular distribution of the experimental elastic scattering data is possible. The parameters of the model are cut-off angular momentum T, the rounding parameter , and the real nuclear phase-shift . The quality of fit to the experiment is nearly of similar nature to that achieved by optical model. The optical model has nine to twelve adjustable parameters where as the model SAM has only three. The three parameters of SAM model are quite sufficient to analyze the experimental elastic scattering data. From such an analysis, the extracted SAM parameters are unique whereas the optical model parameters suffer from discrete and continuous ambiguities and that is why the parameters of the optical are not unique. ····· 103613697

Radon is a naturally occurring, odorless, colorless and radioactive inert gas produced by the breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water. Because radon is a gas, it can enter buildings through openings or cracks in the foundation. The radioactive radon gas itself decays into radioactive solids, called radon daughters. The radon daughters attach to dust particles in the air, and can be inhaled. The inhalation of radon daughters has been linked to lung cancer. As a result of this, radon has been identified as the second leading cause of lung cancer next to smoking in the United States and other parts of the world. `WHO now suggests that homeowners take action when radon levels exceed 2.7 pCi/l` in order to safe themselves from lung cancer that can be caused by radon and its daughters. This is a much more conservative safe limit than `the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA`s) action level of 4.0 pCi/l`, which has been the U.S. standard for over 20-years. The mass region 170 190 is basically a transitional region between the strongly deformed rare earth nuclei and the spherical lead isotopes. The nuclei, belonging to this region exhibit softness in their nuclear potential and therefore are better known as gamma-soft nuclei . For these nuclei the proton Fermi level is in the vicinity of highly down sloping low K, high-j orbitals like proton h_9/2[541]1/2^- and proton i_13/2[660]1/2^+, intruding from above the Z = 82 shell closure. Depending upon the type of orbital occupied by the odd particle, these nuclei are expected to exhibit a variety of nuclear shapes. So, this mass region is rich in nuclear structural properties and therefore offers a wide possibility for the nuclear shapes studies. In the present work, an attempt has been made to study the structural properties of nuclei of this mass region at high spins through level lifetime measurements. ····· 103613164

The nuclear properties of the 95Nb, 97Mo, 99Mo &102Mo nuclei were studied with the 93Nb(t, p) 95Nb, 95Mo(t, p)97Mo, 97Mo(t, p)99Mo and100Mo(t, p)102Mo reactions. The experiments were carried out using triton beam energy of 12 MeV obtained from tandem Van de Graaff accelerator at the Atomic Weapon Research Establishment, Aldermaston, England. Out going protons were detected in nuclear emulsion plates using a multi-channel magnetic spectrograph. Proton spectra were obtained at 12 different of angles from 50 to 87.50 at an interval of 7.50. Absolute differential cross sections for the levels of different energy range in each nucleus were measured. The angular distributions over an angular range 50 to 87.50 were compared with the theoretical distorted- wave Born approximation calculations (DWBA) to determine L and Jp values. The DWBA program was run for different L transitions from 0 to 5 for levels up to the different excitation energy. Assignments of L values were based on closeness of the DWBA fits to the experimental points. ····· 10361570
