The immune phenotype of mice deficient for Ly49Q

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Plasmacytoid dendritic cells are members of the innate immune system and are particularly important in anti-viral immunity since they are the most potent producers of type I interferons. This book describes the phenotype of knockout mice for Ly49Q, a cell surface receptor expressed on pDCs. In vivo, knockout mice with PGK-Neomycin insertion control early murine cytomegalovirus infection better, but no difference could be detected in mice with recombined LoxP sites. Thus, we observed a differential immune response dependent on the gene knockout strategy. In mice with PGK-Neomycin insertion, we found enhanced hematopoiesis of some populations of the myeloid lineage and lower activation of pDCs following treatment with particular Toll-like receptor ligands, which translates into diminished T cell stimulatory capacity. This suggests a role for Ly49Q in regulating hematopoiesis and pDC activation potential. ····· 10361135568

Motor vehicle fatalities in 2005 represented the number one cause of death for U.S. adolescents aged 16 to 24. Examining the existing literature on adolescent health and fatality data found in a population of 12 million young drivers highlights some disturbing trends. The results of these efforts reveal a significant relationship between adolescent fatalities and relative authority of state laws governing how young drivers progress from restricted to unrestricted license status. The need for individual states to adopt an ideal graduated drivers licensing program based on best practices is confirmed. ····· 10361135425

Determinants of Adherence to HAART in Patients of Central India

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
AIDS has rapidly become the most feared diseases of our times. The fatality of the disease combined with the rapid spread in the last few decades has made it a global concern. With the advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy, the prognosis and the outlook towards the disease has changed and it has become a chronic manageable disease from a disease which once meant a death sentence. Adherence to the treatment is of paramount importance with HAART as the outcome of non adherence is drastic. This study is thus an effort to unravel the determinants which affect adherence in a population on HAART in a hospital based setting in central India. It would help better understand, what needs to be done further, in order to attain the goal of cent per cent adherence and what is it, that plagues the target today. The book would be found useful by anybody dealing with HIV positive patients including clinicians, nurses, medical and nursing students, counselors and researchers working on the subject. ····· 10361134186

Assessment of Farmers` Knowledge to Prevent Occupational Hazards

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
The interactions between agriculture and health are two-way: agriculture affects health, and health affects agriculture. The process of agricultural production and the outputs it generates can contribute to both good and poor health, among producers as well as the wider population. Agriculture is fundamental for good health through the production of the world s food, fiber and materials for shelter, and in some systems, medicinal plants. Among rural communities it contributes to livelihoods and food security, and provides income which can be spent on health care and prevention. Agriculture is the primary source of livelihood for the majority of the India s rural population who in turn are most vulnerable to ill-health due to occupational risks. Knowledge of farmers about agrochemical use and safe animal keeping is a key to understanding how to take sensible precautions against health exposure. Thus a clear understanding of farmers knowledge about safety issues is central to inform policy makers to develop environmental and health cost reduction strategy. ····· 10361134111

Effects of exercise in different temperatures in Type 1 Diabetics

für 53.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) is an autoimmune disease affecting millions of people worldwide that destroys pancreatic beta cells, influencing glucose homeostasis. In T1DM, glucoregulation and carbohydrate oxidation may be altered in different ambient temperatures however, current literature has yet to explore these mechanisms. This publication examines the effects of 30 minutes of exercise at 65% VO2max in 5ºC, 20ºC and 35ºC in individuals with T1DM. No significant differences were observed for blood glucose across the 3 conditions (p = 0.442), but significance was found for core temperature, heat storage, and sweat rate (p 0.01). Blood glucose was also shown to vary greatly between individuals among conditions. The mechanisms behind the differences in blood glucose may be due to the lack of significant glucagon production among conditions. These findings suggest that T1DM individuals may exercise submaximally for 30 minutes in different ambient temperatures without significant differences in glucoregulation. ····· 10361133968

Measuring Quality in Healthcare services

This book focuses on the measurement of factors that influence the quality of service systems, healthcare services in particular.Evaluation of quality in a healthcare organization is a multi-level effort. Developing a measuring instrument is an important step in assessing an organisation s service quality. Many of the earlier studies neglected significant impacts of issues because of the existence of governmental institutions. Models from past studies are confined in their capability and applicability to analyse service process to private healthcare institutions. Even though the various literatures provide the insight into evaluation and performance of a healthcare organization, an integrated quality model has not been addressed into. It is critical to measure healthcare service quality because of increased competition and become more market-oriented. In this scenario, this book endeavours to explore the research issues of service quality and its measurement with a specific reference to the healthcare sector in a developing economy. This research work assumes greater significance especially in the global context to adopt comprehensive approach in healthcare services. ····· 10361133810

Controlling malaria in pregnancy

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Malaria is a major public health challenge in developing countries. Throughout the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world the disease causes more than 300 million acute illnesses and at least a million deaths annually. Due to the heavy burden that it exerts on pregnant women and their infants, various policies have been implemented to control the disease in pregnant women. One such strategy is the use of intermittent preventive treatment (IPT) services with Sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP). This investigation shows that even though antenatal clinic (ANC) attendance is high among women, only 47.2% (CI 3.1 50.8) of women who took SP as IPT had three doses. Women who lack formal education are more likely not to have complete IPT (OR 1.5 95% CI 1.23 1.69). ANC staff in rural areas have been trained on IPT but there were occasional shortages of the drug in some health facilities. The study should help illuminate how specific variables significantly interact to influence the uptake of IPT services in rural settings. It should therefore be useful to health educators in particular and anyone else involve in public health. ····· 10361132978

Community volunteers have long been known to provide essential health services to people. This remarkable contribution has been applauded by World Health Organization in what has come to be known as Task Shifting, a practice of shifting tasks from nurses and doctors to volunteers. Critical shortage of nurses and doctors, coupled with the scourge of HIV/AIDS has led to developing countries to come up with strategies to continue providing health services to the people. Zambia, like in any country in Sub-Saharan Africa is affected by this critical shortage of health care workers, particularly in rural areas. This book brings to the fore acceptability of these volunteers by the recipients of health care - the community members themselves. It takes HIV/AIDS as centre stage, but also recognizes the role that volunteers can play in development through health. ····· 10361118453

Among the infections, Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is one of the major infections caused, and its being the second most common type of infection in the body.Several uropathogens are drug-resistant, and this limits therapeutic options. Therefore, alternative methods of treatment are sought after. Plants are the oldest source of pharmacologically active compounds, and have provided humankind with various medically useful compounds for centuries. Today it is estimated that more than two thirds of the world s population relies on plant derived drugs Thus phytochemical screening of plant species, especially of ethnopharmaceutical use, will provide valuable baseline information in the search for new pharmaceuticals. Hence screening of antimicrobial plants for new agents poses an enormous challenge and is important especially with the emergence of drug resistant disease strains. It has only been in the past two decades or so that interest in higher plant antimicrobial agents has been reawakened world wide, and the literature in this area is becoming substantial.Hence this work was undertaken. ····· 10361102688

AIDS is the leading killer among the sexually active section of the population in Sub-Saharan Africa. Ethiopia is also one of the countries with high prevalence of HIV/AIDS. Lack of awareness and misconceptions contributed to high risk behavior that lead to the spread of HIV/AIDS. While young people are among the most vulnerable groups to HIV infection, they are also the most promising agents of behavior change. If behavior change is to be effective, it should involve the youth itself in the generation of appropriate messages. Four hundred and twenty two voluntary youth were selected systematically from the list of 40 youth groups working in HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support in the 10 sub-cities of Addis Ababa. A structured and pre-tested self administered questionnaire was used for data collection.
