Risk factors for coronary heart disease

für 71.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Introduction: In recent years, the dominance of cardiovascular diseases as a major contributor to total mortality globally was observed. Standardized death certification rates for cerebrovascular disease in Bulgaria in the age group 0-64 were about six times higher than in England in 1994. Methods: This study is based on a sample of 3100 people aged 25 - 74. Subjects were invited to their local polyclinics where anthropometrical indices and blood pressure were measured, a blood sample drawn and questionnaire administered. Results: Means and proportions for ages 35 64 standardised to the world standard population, were for males and females respectively: Systolic blood pressure 132 mmHg and 129 mmHg, Diastolic blood pressure 86 mmHg and 85 mmHg, Total serum cholesterol 5.0 mmol/l and 5.0 mmol/l, Body Mass Index 26.2 kg/m2 and 25.8 kg/m2, regular smokers - 36% and 29%. Conclusions: The risk factor findings offer little explanation for reported mortality trends. Repeated surveillance studies will be needed and for these, greater attention will need to be given to achieving and maintaining quality in data collection. ····· 1036121198

Client Satisfaction with HIV/AIDS Care in Kabale, Uganda

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
There is a wide availability of HIV/AIDS care services in Uganda, including counseling, testing, and treatment. These services are provided by both the public and the private sectors. In 2008, the country had approximately 121,218 people with HIV/AIDS receiving antiretroviral therapy, and the target for the year 2011/12 was to increase this figure. This involves ambitious expansion. Nonetheless, there are few assessments of how the process of scale-up of HIV/AIDS care affects quality, efficiency and cost effectiveness. Quality of care has an important bearing on client satisfaction, a key aspect of health care delivery. Client satisfaction can determine if a client seeks medical advice and care and adheres to prescribed treatment. Dissatisfaction can have terrible consequences, like patients not following treatment regimens. Little information is available on satisfaction among clients who receive HIV/AIDS care in Uganda, comparing public and private health facilities. It was necessary to find out the situation in each, and the perceived quality of care. This study measured client satisfaction in Kabale district where HIV/AIDS prevalence is about 10%. ····· 1036120930

A population of antenal women 1000 preference of male child an indicator of gender discrimination was seen, It correlated with female age, literacy, their socioeconomic status, parity. After a detailed the present study showed a clear picture of factors affecting the knowledge and attitude towards the PC & PNDT Act. The existence of son preference at an alarmingly high rate in our society is the root cause of imbalanced sex ratio. Moreover, the inclination to female feticide is reported by the subjects in spite of them being aware of the consequences of imbalance in sex ratio. Socio demographic factors like age, literacy, socioeconomic status, parity sex of the previous child and pressure by family or husband affect the knowledge, attitude and practices towards the PC & PNDT Act and woman s preference for her next child. These days higher social classes are more vulnerable for misuse of PC & PNDT Act, doing sex selection and female feticide. ····· 1036120828

HIV AIDS Education

für 71.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
One of the key responses to the HIV/AIDS crisis has been the provision of School- based HIV/AIDS education, to try and improve teenagers` ability to make wise and sensible decisions regarding their behaviours. The interventions have been premised on links between education and behaviour, the underlying assumption being that teaching young people how to protect themselves from HIV can lead to a reduction in risk behaviour and hence a reduction in HIV incidence (UNAIDS, 1997). An important part of this process has been the development of an education sector policy on HIV and AIDS, aimed at implementing and effecting, among others, the policy goal of Prevention. This study, with the use of a systems theory as a theoretical framework, examines the policy, provision and practice of HIV/AIDS education in secondary schools in Kenya with the view to informing policy and providing options for re-designing and scaling up (if necessary) the HIV/AIDS program. ····· 1036120529

Malnutrition, a most common nutritional deficiency worked worldwide with more interest in under five children and to some extend in elderly. But do we really care the nutritional status of adolescents which is the most rapid growing state, only next to infancy. In the underdeveloped and developing countries, estimates from various national and international studies shows upto half the girls in their adolescence are malnourished, and half of those are on the verge to deliver a child, at risk of under nutrition. Various national programs and voluntary health organizations are working in the field of improvement of nutritional status of adolescent girls for more than half a century, yet the problem is a great public health hazard. Attempt has been made in this study to identify the problem status along with the correlates of nutritional status through community based cross sectional study and identification of factors perceived by the adolescents themselves for prevention of non attainment of proper nutrition and failing all the attempts targeted towards the issue. ····· 1036120466

HLA Expression in Leukemia

für 61.20€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Classical HLA class I (class Ia) downregulation may be the cause of immune escape mechanism by the cancer cells and is well documented in different cancers. Recently it is shown that in leukemia there is a locus specific HLA class Ia downregulation both at the antigenic and transcriptional level. As, so far, no mutation is recorded in HLA genes so the reason may lies at the expression of different transcription factors (TRFs) that regulate its expression. Reports suggest that there is an alteration of the constitutive region binding TRFs of the HLA promoter in leukemia. Though there is upregulation of some inducible region binding TRFs, but they are unable to transcribe the HLA class Ia genes. This indicates the accessory role of the inducible binding TRFs. Absence of non-classical HLA class I (class Ib) in leukemic cells may give us the molecular rationale for the success of NK cell mediated immunotherapy. Interestingly, neutrophils (PMNs) of normal volunteers in contact with leukemic cells showed HLA class II expression and oxidative damage towards the leukemic cells. So, PMNs can be utilized for the management of infections under the condition and for leukemia immunotherapy. ····· 1036120312

The trends of Acute Myocardial Infarct (AMI) subjects with hyperlipidemia has changed. The current study is based on stratification of risk factors in Normolipidemic AMI subjects, where the author approaches to elucidate the various risk factors and compounding variables associated with AMI in subjects who were absolutely Normolipidemic but suffered a set back.It has been observed that it is not only the lipids but there are several others analytical variables which can lead to AMI.The take away home message from this study highlights on measurements of other risk variables which are associated with the silent killer. It has become mandatory to analyze these risk variables in appropriate time so that the heavy cost beard by the subjects in Intensive Coronary Care Unit(ICCU) is minimized and can be healthy if these variables are also considered as a routine biochemical examination and measured in right time. The Author believes the current trends of AMI always associated with hyperlipidemia would change and subjects must be aware of other risk variables if they consider themselves risk free by being Normolipidemic. ····· 1036120213

Understanding the relationships between clinical and non-clinical caregivers in the hospital environment of care is vital to determining best practices that improve patient outcomes. The purpose of this study is to understand the relationships among biomedical engineering technicians (BMETs) and clinical caregivers in order to promote hospital quality through the reduction of hospital acquired infections associated with medical equipment. The BMET health support occupation is under-represented in research despite evidence that validates their indirect impact on patient outcomes through their medical equipment duties. Results from the Biomedical Engineering Interdepartmental survey determined the effects of structural complexity and process adequacy in Clinical Engineering using structural equation analysis under the theoretical framework of Donabedian s Structure-Process-Outcome model. Statistical analysis leads to recommendations that hospital environments that create a coordinated organizational culture of interdepartmental device management through communication, collaboration, teamwork, and knowledge management can promote quality and therefore, reduce adverse events. ····· 1036120076

Malaria Prevalence and Coping Strategies: Vulnerability Differentials

The failure of malaria eradication in Ghana coupled with the prevailing environmental and economic conditions in the Ga East Municipality put majority of the inhabitants at high risk of malaria infection. This book presents the spatial prevalence of malaria and the coping strategies adopted to prevent and treat malaria in the Ga East Municipality. It was observed that the disease has consistently been the most predominant cause of morbidity and places a challenge on the health delivery system in the municipality. The book also shows that an interplay of environmental, economic and anthropogenic factors leads to differentials in vulnerability to malaria infections. Malaria also directly and indirectly affects the potential of an individual to undertake his or her daily economic activities, the ability to participate in community and religious gatherings. Malaria has the tendency of reducing household income and creates emotional and psychological distress. This book therefore identifies the weaknesses associated with the unavailability of basic services in urban fringes and how they affect health conditions. It is therefore recommended for experts who aim at solving health problems. ····· 1036120071

Chronological developments of public health in 19th and 21st centuries are discussed in this book, starting from Edwin Chadwick s sanitary movement and the social and Economic Drivers behind them,John snow s work and various legislative Acts. In 19th century the main focus was on Physical Infrastruture especially to provide adequate sanitation ,housing and clean water.Public Health then was mainly concerned with the prevention of Infectious and contagious threats to Human health and concerned with poor and special needs group. What has emerged as the New public Health is the approach which tries to bring together the environmental change and personal perspective measures with suitable interventions. The contemporary health problems is seen as social rather than individual and what is needed to address these problems is Healthy Public Policy. In the New public Health the environment is Social, psychological and physical as well. Free from the traditional social restrictions and taboos of their communities of origin, and taking advantage of the anonymity of cities, migrants generally adopt more liberal sexual behaviours at their places of destination. They are also more subject to external influences, which may drive them to adopt new practices such as drug use. Because of this increased vulnerability, they may become transmitters of STI/HIV to their families and communities back home. In fact, in Tamil Nadu, migration is the main link between HIV high-risk groups and the population at large. Although all elements point to the importance of a coordinated prevention policy for migrants on HIV, research on the subject has been minimal and inter-state cooperation has been restricted to a few isolated activities, falling short of a comprehensive policy on the subject. It is hoped that the present research will contribute to filling this gap. This research adopted a cross-sectional methodology, including a thorough literature review, and detailed questionnaires for 1009 slum dwellers. Government health facilities have always been grossly under-utilized. Among other issues of quality and responsiveness, the overall focus on disease prevention and health promotion has been negligible. Private sector though fills the gaps but can neither become the forefront provider for the entire population, nor it can ensure equity. To develop rational policies and feasible plans for efficient, acceptable, cost-effective, affordable and accessible health services, the drivers of health seeking behaviour need to be understood. Traditionally, the health policy planning process has been impaired due to a lack of information relating to the utilization of public, private and informal health care in Pakistan, especially among the rural remote population sub groups. Moreover, the determinants of health service utilization such as socio-demographic, economic physical accessibility, financial accessibility, mother s autonomy and health service factors are seldom taken into account. This monograph provides a framework to the policy makers and the system managers to make the strategic health plans in the light of complex set of factors which are vital for the user of health services. ····· 1036118876

Neurological diseases are a global burden, with huge consequences both in mortality and morbidity. Research efforts towards the search for neuroprotective substances in hopes to curtailing the consequences of these diseases are continuous. Most neurodegenrative diseases are usually a consequence of excess production of oxygen radicals from oxidative stress. The oxygen radicals are mopped up by antioxidants produced endogenously or from nutritional supplements. Flavonoids are rich sources of antioxidants. Thus have the ability to scavenge free radicals, making them harmless. There are abundant plants known to be rich in antioxidants. Kolaviron is the biflavonoid complex and most abundant constituent of one of such plants, Garcinia kola. Due to the antioxidant properties of kolaviron it will have the potential to protect neurons from toxic damage, and that is the focus of this work. Also this work hopes to encourage more researches amongst bio-medical scientists in search for more neuroprotective plant sources as these may make a key contribution to controlling and curtailing neurological diseases. ····· 1036118174

Studies have shown that HIV/AIDS remains a major public health challenge worldwide and the adoption of preventive health behaviour holds the key to its control. Little is known, however, about the typology of preventive health behaviour adopted by undergraduates of the University of Ibadan against the disease condition. This study, therefore determined the pattern and types of HIV preventive health behaviour among undergraduates of the University. The study was cross-sectional in design. A two-stage sampling procedure was used to randomly select 400 students from the Faculties of Pharmacy, the Social Sciences, Arts and Dentistry out of the thirteen Faculties in the university. A validated questionnaire which assessed the students preventive health behaviour and the antecedent factors was used for data collection. The prevalence of the adoption of each of the types of HIV preventive health behaviour among the participants was low in spite of their general high level of knowledge of the disease. Health education strategies such as peer education, social marketing and advocacy are needed to promote the adoption of preventive health behaviour among young persons. ····· 1036118070
