Students` perceptions of professors credibility is an impressive research. It is clearly written and provides a theortical framework for future research. The issue of students` perceptions of professors` teaching methods is addressed with a very balanced account of the applied theory. Using Expectation States Theory, it is clear that perceived professors` credibility and means in which students obtain classroom learning is complex and involves many dimensions. This book is very helpful for professors, who are willing to increase students` learning abilities, as well as students who like to obtain and retain classrooms` provided knowledge. ····· 10361113930

Storytelling - In Our Minds and In the Classroom

Sherman Alexie is a modern mythmaker he is a storyteller with a firm belief in the power of storytelling. The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven is a collection that explores the nature of relationships between people and these characters` struggle to find an autonomous modern identity. By studying literature and the structures in literature, new understandings of how we view life and ourselves may emerge and therefore literature needs to be given a significantly larger space in second language teaching than what has been the tradition in Norwegian schools. This analysis briefly presents the leading theories on the field of narratology. It also explains how narratology can be didactic, and how information and knowledge can be presented as a narrative. Alexie is a writer who explores his life experience as a Native American and who has taken on a similar role of a storyteller and trickster employed in his fiction as a means to survive reservation life through exaggeration and humor, mirroring the Native American storytelling tradition. My goal is to offer a narratological approach to his work which connects narratives with reality through a coherent line called didactic. ····· 10361113785

This is a systematic and objective study of the effects of the Quality Assurance and Standards Officers assessment visits to secondary schools on the utilization of instructional media in the teaching of English subject and its performance a case of Uasin Gishu District in Kenya. It reveals that the Kenyan government policy entails allowing a broad based participation in the provision of education with all stakeholders taking responsibility for planning and implementation. In tandem with this policy direction is the decentralization of decision-making and resource management to lower level structures with Ministry of Education maintaining general oversight and overall superintendence. The findings demonstrate that the arrangement has resulted in major weaknesses in management and delivery of services particularly at the school level. Mechanisms to coordinate the various state agencies involved in the supervision and management of education are lacking and capacities of districts and school level structures that manage education services are inadequate particularly at the district and school level planning and reporting, assessment, monitoring and evaluation of resource management. ····· 10361113773

An increasing focus on early childhood education and brain research offers a prime opportunity for higher education institutions to research and formulate thought concerning quality child care. To add to the base of knowledge, this nationally-focused study examined the following broad question: `what value do campus child care centers offer to a given higher education institution and its surrounding community, especially from a center director`s perspective ` Directors believe their centers are most successful within the university by offering a variety of care options, modeling age appropriate practices, and providing work opportunities for students. Campus centers are most successful in their external communities by modeling quality child care practices and secondly, improving relations. This study found a lack of substantial barriers to the successful daily operation of most centers. Overall, study findings reveal that the perceived value of the campus center is through dissemination of its mission of education, training and meeting the needs of its constituents for the benefit of the university. Three hundred Junior High School female pupils were sampled. It was found out that girl`s school type, societal attitude and the stereotyped environment had influence on the participation of females in technical education. Thus, the major factor responsible for the low participation of females in technical education was inadequate career counselling in the Junior High Schools. It is recommended that competent guidance coordinators should be assigned to the Junior High schools to help pupils acquire effective decision making skills to make informed career choices. ····· 10361113673

Meta-Schema for Program Design in Introductory Programming

für 53.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Studies have shown that the main difficulty faced in learning to program is related to planning rather than language structures. As possible solution to address this difficulty, this book describes an investigation into the effects of fostering a meta-schema for program design for novice programmers. A study was conducted in an introductory programming course with two groups of students. The experimental group was taught about a design strategy and special emphasis was put on design visualization. For the control group conventional teaching was applied. Also in the following lab assignment, design was emphasized for the experimental group. Analysis of the program code and the documentation of the students indicates the intervention did not influence the correctness of the programs. However, it had a positive effect on problem decomposition. Furthermore, it is observed that students have problems with effectively applying language structures. An ideal curriculum for programming would therefore foster the development of both meta-schemas (e.g. design strategy and visualization) and specialized design schemas (e.g. best practices in applying data structures and control structures). ····· 10361113669

ICT is hardly used in Uganda to develop distance education and this despite political goodwill, the positive experiences reflected in some of the showcases and the limited but available infrastructure. Key enabling factors have been identified:government commitment, planning, availability of resources, technology, private sector partnership and commitment. The major challenges:lack of adequate resources, standards, a negative attitude and the lack of an ICT policy to guide implementations. A central element in this research was an RTEP oriented learning approach to counter the technical rationality that is observed in teacher education. The ICT-based learning environment was to promote the quality of education. The ICT-based environment was also considered to be helpful to meet the growing need for teacher education in Uganda and to promote more flexible access to teacher education. `Evaluating the Implementation of Explicit Grammatical Instruction: Chiang Mai City Schools`, is an attempt to investigate the dilemma that characterises the learning of English in Thailand. The study in this book was done in the Thai northern city of Chiang Mai which is Thailand`s second largest city. It is an open secret that whereas, Thais learn English over several years, a great majority of these learners dawdle and are known not to demonstrate the gains and benefits of the learning in written and spoken English both in the class-room and practically, outside it.The need to establish why the average long-term learners of English do not demonstrate accuracyand fluency inspired the research. It has been seen----even if peripherally---- that a great majority of Thai teachers of grammar do not follow the prescribed and suggested procedures of grammar teaching, and especially fail to take learners through the critical stage of `producing` learnt structures during or after lessons. ····· 10361113577

Strategies for Managing Virtual Learning Environment

While classroom teaching and management strategies are well documented, the online environments are not, but also present different challenges and benefits. Teaching in an online environment requires a special set of teaching skills since many of the strategies and tactics associated with best teaching practices are somewhat constrained by the primarily text-based environment. This handbook summarizes the key strategies that an instructor utilizes to be effective in an online environment especially using Moodle LMS tools. The handbook was developed in response to the growing number of instructors at institutions who are considering or making the transition to using Learning Management systems (eg. Moodle LMS) to complement their face to face teaching and those who are currently teaching in ICT-Mediated distance programmes. Whether totally inexperienced in online instruction or are relatively savvy about it, instructors through this handbook will find the answers to many questions about how to manage a state-of-the-art online course. ····· 10361113543

NGO Education and the Development of Civil Society in Cambodia

für 53.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
In Cambodia, as in many other post-conflict countries, civil society is weak and poorly developed. Following thirty years of violent civil unrest, the country remains scarred politically and socially. Relations between government and local communities are tenuous, and the capacity for civic participation in the development and implementation of community-based social programs is severely limited. Consequently a number of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are striving to strengthen Cambodian civil society and to enhance the capacity of local communities to engage effectively with government institutions. This book presents the results of an ethnographic case study of two NGO- sponsored educational programs that are striving to strengthen local civic capacity and to foster productive democratic relationships between community leadership and local government officials. The study highlights the potential for strengthening Cambodian grassroots civil society in circumstances characterized by deep-seated socio- cultural traditions, post-war undercurrents of resistance to modernization, and abiding suspicion of government authorities. ····· 10361113513

This study investigated the impact of a problem-posing intervention on students who had been ascertained through psychometric testing as above average in their mathematical aptitude but below average in their problem-solving skills. The study uses both quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate the nature of changes that resulted following an eight -week teaching experiment. Findings of this study provide positive evidence to suggest that problem-posing is a useful activity in the quest for improved problem-solving competence, particularly in a student`s ability to explain how they solved problems. In addition, the data collected provided evidence to suggest that student`s attitudes towards solving problems can be greatly enhanced by a problem-posing intervention. ····· 10361113479

In contemporary, inner city classrooms, linguistic interactions do not occur in a vacuum therefore, this text advocates for increased linguistic dexterity and cultural acceptance of sociolinguistic interactions among teachers and students. The author investigated how African American teachers used code switching during instruction to impact student achievement, student-teacher relationships, and the educational environment. The text explores sociolinguistic and sociopolitical phenomena by using an ethnographic approach by conducting two case studies that generated four theoretical propositions using Grounded Theory. The results of the study revealed that African American teachers use code switching as a means of communicating concepts and reinforcing sociocultural norms consequently, the teachers implemented teaching strategies specifically targeted towards African American students in order promote student learning and academic achievement. African American teachers integrate code switching as a component of their classroom management strategies, and two dominant strategies are forming interdependent relationships and a community-like atmosphere in their classrooms. ····· 10361113473

Initial Teacher Education in Southern Africa

für 71.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Teacher education has received a lot of attention worldwide and southern Africa is no exception. The major concern associated with it has been what must be taught to student teachers, how it must be conducted and the duration of the training. The challenge has consistently been how best to train teachers who will possess cutting-edge content knowledge and be able to pedagogise that knowledge in order to inspire deep and meaningful learning. The book hinges on how the cooperating/mentor teachers, who essentially are school teachers in charge of supporting and inducting student teachers/mentees during the teaching practicum, can be trained in order to efficiently support and guide the students in their quest to becoming effective teachers. It provides research-based approaches to identifying cooperating/mentor teachers` instructional and supervisory needs. The findings are that trained cooperating teachers/mentors are motivated and have a grounded understanding of teaching, guidance and how to induct student teachers/mentees and neophyte teachers into the art of teaching. ····· 10361113461

A philosophical exploration of democratic participation

This study is philosophical in nature. Through a careful critical examination of the South African Schools Act (SASA) and the Learner Representative Council Guides (RCL) I have tried to evaluate the goals of providing voice for learner expression and providing learners with an opportunity to participate in decision making regarding their schools . From this investigation, I have attempted to work out a general, systematic, coherent and consistent picture of minimal participation of learners in the school governance structure. According to Popkin and Stroll (1993: X111), Socrates, at his trial in 399 BC maintained that the reason he philosophised was that the unexamined life was not worth living . He (Socrates) believes that unless people asked questions, and seriously sought the answers, they would never be able to know if they were doing the right thing. Otherwise, their entire lives might be wasted pursuing useless or even dangerous goals. This is why I decided to examine these RCL goals. ····· 10361113459

This book examines the two methodological approaches to teaching Modern Greek as a second language to adults to determine which approach is more successful. Syllabi were gathered from leading Hellenic Studies programs from across the United States and from language institutes in Athens, Greece. The syllabi were examined to identify both the textbooks used as well as the structure of the course and assignments given. While the translation approach is useful in teaching Modern Greek, it is not as successful as the total-immersion approach. Language centers and programs should adopt the total-immersion approach to teach Modern Greek to adult students. ····· 10361113388

ChilRight-Duty Dichotomy in Schooling in Nepal

The human rights and child right concerns were accelerated from the west and universalized throughout the world by neglecting the context, culture, level of income, living conditions and social norms and values of the countries around the globe. In this context, the felt problem is how to implement the universal provision of human and child rights as an universal phenomenon, where children are treated as the most needy, controlled, and neglected member in the society. Besides, they have to play the role of duty holder instead of right holders in their childhood, schooling and social life. There are various types of mindsets i.e. traditional, labelling, right-oriented, equity driven and global mindsets among the adults and children. Such variations have resulted different types of child right- duty dichotomies i.e. education / labour rights / duties inclusion / exclusion liberation /oppression and equality / inequality. More specifically, the book also provides the knowledge on how children managed these dichotomies. This book is useful to educationists, researchers and academicians to analyze the east-west debate and also the implication of universal provision of child rights. ····· 10361113378

The book examines who controls whom, what and why in the education system of Lesotho. This was done by looking at the relationship between teachers, the state and the churches in Lesotho. Also how teachers perceive themselves in relation to the state structures. Teachers are aware and conscious of the nature of their work and the contradictions that go with it. Their organizations fight on bread and butter issues, they also show deeper dissatisfaction over professional issues like curriculum development and the topdown policies of the government, but their leadership does not seem able to take up this professional dissatisfaction and formulate appropriate professional demands. The leadership is not pro-active yet the ground is fertile for organizing teachers on professional issues. Teachers have minimal control of what goes on in the schools. It is clear from our findings that it is the state which makes decisions on the content of education, the organization of schools at various levels, staffing ratios, inspection of schools and conducting of examinations. The church has control over the recruitment, appointment and transfer of teachers. ····· 10361113372

The seminar marked the start of a biennial conference on curriculum theory in Scandinavia. Curriculum theory addresses issues related to education practice, policy and research, as well as their interaction. Particular attention is paid to the selection, transmission and assessment of knowledge, and the relations between various stakeholders. Curriculum issues tend to be transdisciplinary and different perspectives and methods have been applied and developed within curriculum studies. The contributors of the book consider both history and future of curriculum theory. Curriculum is presented and discussed in terms of content, pedagogy, and evaluation, with a number of examples being shared and pointing to the impact and implication of curriculum studies for educational practices. The problem of transformation backlog is not one unique to the South African Military Academy but a problem faced by many Government institutions and the private sector.
