This manuscript is a series of research projects which examined aspects of the nature, roles, and inter-relatedness between the fundamental wasp behaviors of stinging, chewing/feeding and aggression using Melittobia as a model. These cosmopolitan, gregarious wasps are easy to rear and manipulate allowing for straightforward methods of addressing interactions. The projects start with simple examinations of life history traits and attributes and move into complex topics of evolutionary behavior. The author, Dr. Leif D. Deyrup, focused on elucidating his interests in behavior and evolution through looking at inter and intra-species behavior of the small parasitic wasp Melittobia during his PhD at the University of Georgia. This manuscript is the results of those efforts. ····· 10361115726

Human-Sloth Bear Conflict in Balasore Forest Division, Eastern India

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Sloth bears (Melursus ursinus) are endemic to the Indian subcontinent and frequently come into conflict with humans. In Balasore Forest Division, a total of 67 attacks (resulting in 2 deaths) occurred between June 2002 and June 2006. Most incidents took place during the monsoon season. Attacks occurred early in the morning than at other times locations of attacks were in kitchen gardens, crop fields, and in adjoining forests. In most cases, the attacking bear ran away or was chased by other people or livestock. Most victims suffered from multiple injuries. Single injuries on face, hand and leg were reported. Collection time for the M.T.P and N.T.P by the local people i.e. mid night to late morning of food items coincided with the time when bears remained most active, which led to more encounters with people. Bears were mostly dependent on ants, termites and some fruit items in winter & summer months. Thus competition for resource sharing, non-timber forest produce collection, human disturbances, livestock grazing, feeding on crops and farming or crop protection were found to be the important factors responsible for rise in human-sloth bear conflicts. ····· 10361115725

Newcastle Disease Virus

für 53.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Newcastle disease is a highly contagious and often severe disease found world wide that affects birds including domestic poultry. The disease appears in three forms: lentogenic or mild, mesogenic or moderate and velogenic or very virulent, also called exotic Newcastle disease. It usually presents as a respiratory disease, but depression, nervous manifestations, or diarrhoea may be the predominant clinical form. The disease is frequently responsible for devastating losses in village poultry since most of these birds are not subjected to routine vaccination. In this book, we describe the molecular changes which occur in the fusion protein gene of a velogenic Newcastle disease virus when it is passaged continuously in chicken embryo fibroblast and vero cells. The molecular changes have been correlated with the virulence characteristics of the virus and histopathological changes in the various organs of susceptible chickens. To the end the cell culture adapted viruses were back passaged in susceptible chickens to predict the changes if any at the gene level together with the virulence attributes. ····· 10361115689

Improvement of roughages by urea and sulphur supplementation

für 53.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
The productive performance of livestock is very low which may be due to non-availability of quality feeds and fodder around the year. There are many methods by which quality of the fodders can be enhanced but important advances have been made in livestock nutrition especially in respect of the role of rumen microorganisms in synthesis of protein from non-protein nitrogen sources such as urea and ammonium compounds. However, the urea can be utilized more efficiently in presence of sulphur and energy sources. The authors have tried to carry out the research work to study the effect of feeding urea treated wheat straw with or without sulphur source on feed utilization by crossbred heifers. The book is primarily aimed at providing comprehensive basic and applied technical information on urea and sulphur supplementation to ruminants. It would be useful book for students, teachers, researchers, planners and enlightened farmers to find out their respective sphere of action on urea and sulphur supplementation. ····· 10361115609

The study reports the laboratory and field investigations on cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp) root rot infection due to Pythium species in east senatoria district, Kogi State, Nigeria. Laboratory studies were carried out to isolate, identify and control the fungus associated with the root rot. Four local government areas were survey for the disease incidence with emphasis on Dekina, Abejukolo, Ajaaka and Ankpa towns between 2004 and 2006. At the four locations studied, Dekina had the highest incidence of the disease followed by Ajaaka while the least incidence of the disease was recorded in Abejukolo. Three cowpea cultivars viz local variety (gwana), Ife-brown and IAR-16 were used for the study. These were cultivated on ridges in the field or in potting bags and kept in a Screen House for pathogenicity studies, bioassay of fungicides and plant extracts. Of the cowpea cultivars grown, Ife-brown was the most resistant with the least percentage infection, compared with the other cultivars (local variety and IAR-16).. ····· 10361115558

Leguminous cover crops in nematode suppression and soil improvement

für 53.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Nematodes cause yield losses to cultivated crops. Currently, synthetic chemicals are the most effective management strategy, but this option threatens man and the environment. Phytochemicals provide a sustainable management option. When inoculated with a Meloidogyne arenaria-incognita- javanica complex in a glasshouse experiment, Mucuna pruriens and Crotalaria spectabilis were poor or non- hosts. However, Dolichos lablab was highly susceptible. The root system of D. lablab stimulated population increase but the leaf eluant proved lethal. Thus, different parts of a plant contain different active ingredients or concentrations of compounds. A similar trend was observed in field trials at two locations. Okra cultivated on plots previously sown to M. pruriens, C. retusa and C. spectabilis had significantly lower gall, egg mass and susceptibility indices than the control treatment. The residual effect of M. pruriens controlled Meloidogyne spp., increased plant growth and resulted in significant 48% yield increase over the control treatment. This monograph would be beneficial to agricultural researchers, students, extension agents and farmers. ····· 10361115501

Pumpkin Seed Flour and its Micro-nutrient levels

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
This work was aimed at evaluating the potential of pumpkin seed flour in enhancing the vitamin A and iron levels of maize flour. Vitamin A content of maize flour alone was not sufficient to meet the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for the infants, children, males, females, pregnant and lactating mothers. However, the mixtures of pumpkin seed flour and maize flour in the ratios of 1:1, 2:1 and 4:1 had enough vitamin A to meet the RDAs of such groups of people, implying that the pumpkin seed flour enhanced the vitamin A composition of maize flour. The iron content in a mixture of pumpkin seed flour and maize flour in the ratio of 4:1 was found to meet the RDAs of infants, children, males, females, pregnant and lactating mothers. Iron content of maize flour alone could not meet the RDAs of any of the above groups of people, implying that the pumpkin seed flour enhanced the iron content of maize flour. Sensory evaluation results of porridge and meal prepared from maize flour alone and a mixture of pumpkin seed revealed that the formulation of pumpkin seed flour and maize flour in the ratio of 4:1 respectively is the most acceptable for both porridge and meal. ····· 10361115418

RNA interference pathways in the moss Physcomitrella patens

für 53.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
RNA interference (RNAi) is a mechanism regulating gene transcript levels by either transcriptional gene silencing (TGS) or by posttranscriptional gene silencing (PTGS), which acts in genome maintenance and the regulation of development. This book show the role of Dicer proteins in the moss Physcomitrella patens, which has four Dicers (DICER-LIKE 1a (DCL1a), DCL1b, DCL3 and DCL4). The Physcomitrella patens was chosen because the dual functions of Dicers in miRNA biogenesis and target cleavage are separable in this species. Using targeted knockout-mutants of Physcomitrella patens, it was shown that DCL1a is required for miRNA biogenesis and DCL1b is required for miRNA-induced target RNA cleavage. Based on these data from Physcomitrella patens a model is proposed for the gene-specific control of transcription factors upon dysfunctions of the RNAi machinery. Similar control mechanisms could be exist in other eukaryotes as well. Also this book provide evidence that artificial miRNAs (amiRNAs) can be used as an alternative tool for studying gene functions in Physcomitrella patens. ····· 10361115316

Alterations of DNA and protein patterns of irradiated cowpea weevils

The present work investigated the effect of gamma irradiation of different developmental stages of the cowpea weevil Callosobruchus maculatus on the fertility of adults in order to determine the sterilizing dose for each stage. The effects of various doses of gamma rays on the DNA and protein patterns of the irradiated adults were also studied to find a physiological marker serving as an effective biological indicator of sterility or sterility genotype print. Alterations of the DNA and protein patterns of the sterile males and females of C. maculatus from the normal ones provide an explanation for the induced sterility regarding the importance of the DNA and the proteins in the transfer of the genetic materials from cell to cell. However, the similarity in DNA and protein patterns of normal and irradiated adult females was interpreted by supposing that the radiation-induced damages in regions of the genome other than at the loci under study. ····· 10361115273

Stable Isotopes in Trophic Ecology

für 71.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Stable isotopes have become a popular method for understanding aquatic ecosystems because they can help scientists in understanding source links and process information in aquatic food webs and to a certain degree in terrestrial systems. Certain isotopes can signify distinct primary producers forming the bases of food webs and trophic level positioning. Stable isotopes assist scientists in analyzing animal diets and food webs by examining the animal tissues that bear a fixed isotopic enrichment or depletion versus the diet. Muscle or protein fractions have become the most common animal tissue used to examine the isotopes because they represent the assimilated nutrients in their diet. The main advantage to using stable isotope analysis as opposed to stomach content observations is that no matter what the status is of the animal`s stomach (empty or not), the isotope tracers in the tissues will give us an understanding of its trophic position and food source. This book demonstrates how only two of the commonly used isotopes in aquatic ecosystem food web analyses have been successfully used in East African lakes. ····· 10361115259

Anthropometry and body composition in two tribal populations of India

Utilization of anthropometry as criteria for ethnic classification gets back when a number of scientists utilized it as major tool of ethnic classification. A good correlation between traits and linguistic affinities in general would be indicative of derivation of different groups of population from different stocks. Ethnic differences in body composition rules and constants are important and challenging to investigate. The result of the present study revealed that Oraons were found significantly higher adiposity in terms of mean PBF and FM compared to that of the Mundas and consequently, significantly less muscle i.e FFM than the Mundas and the result vindicated PBF and FM could be best indicator for assessing ethnic group variation in the present study. In view of the above present study demonstrated the endeavor of Somatotyping, corroborates significant endomorphy among the Oraons, while Mundas were more ectomorphy to mesomorphy. The content of the book may help the students, researchers, scholars for classical studies regarding anthropometry and body composition in population variation in a non-invasive method. ····· 10361115209

VEGF (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor) is a potent angiogenic signal implicated with a key role in several pathological processes, including tumour vascularization, angiogenesis, and endothelial cell growth. The members of VEGF family bind to tyrosine kinase receptors on the cell surface to initiate a signalling cascade. VEGFR-2 is one such Receptor Tyrosine Kinase(RTK) that is found to mediate a majority of the cellular responses to VEGF. A structure based drug design study was performed on VEGFR-2 inhibitors based on the article Hetaryl imidazoles: A novel dual inhibitors of VEGF receptors 1 and 2 . The target protein was retrieved from the Protein Data Bank (I.D. 2OH4), based on the Ramachandran plot. The structures of reported inhibitors were obtained in 3-D format using standard software packages. These 3-D analogues were docked to the protein of choice using Molegro Virtual Docker. Based on a correlation between experimentally obtained log IC50 values and the results of the docking study, direct drug design was carried out. Novel inhibitors with significantly higher moldock scores were obtained with simple modifications to the original structure. ····· 10361114828

Antimicrobial and Antioxidant Properties of Plant Products

Bioactive natural products are those chemical compounds produced by living organisms that exert a biological effect on other organisms. All over the world at present scientists investigate plants, microorganisms, marine creatures and many other forms of life for biological activity. The area where activity has been greatest is the effect of extracts from the flowering plants on human physiology and human pathogens, since this is very relevant to the discovery of new drugs for treating diseases of human beings and other mammals. Testing large number of extracts or compounds to determine if they produce a biochemical or cellular effect is usually one of the first steps in the discovery of bioactive compounds.Plants contain a wide variety of antioxidant molecules, such as flavonoids, anthocyanins, carotenoids, etc. Plant antimicrobials may be of great help in dealing with drug-resistant bacteria due to their unique structures which are quite different than those of conventional antibiotics of microbial origin. This work will be of interest to microbiologists, phytochemists, and those who are into natural product chemistry. ····· 10361114746
