All over the world at present scientists investigate plants, microorganisms, marine creatures and many other forms of life for biological activity. The area where activity has been greatest is the effect of extracts from the flowering plants on human physiology and human pathogens, since this is very relevant to the discovery of new drugs for treating diseases of human beings and other mammals. Testing large number of extracts or compounds to determine if they produce a biochemical or cellular effect is usually one of the first steps in the discovery of bioactive compounds.Plants contain a wide variety of antioxidant molecules, such as flavonoids, anthocyanins, carotenoids, etc. Plant antimicrobials may be of great help in dealing with drug-resistant bacteria due to their unique structures which are quite different than those of conventional antibiotics of microbial origin. This work will be of interest to microbiologists, phytochemists, and those who are into natural product chemistry. ····· 10361114746

Presently ruminant animals are reared by feeding only rice straw which is very poor in quality. Feeding value of rice straw can be improved by supplementation of aquatic plants of which water hyacinth (WH- Eichhornia crassipes) ranks first. WH contains as much as protein and minerals than many conventional forages. This plant has high resistivity with a high production rate and requires no production cost. But WH is very high in water content, which makes the plant low in nutrient density. This problem can be over come by removing some moisture by partial sun drying (wilted form) and can be used as cattle feed. This book, therefore, provides a new technology for improving the low quality roughage based diet and mitigate the chronic livestock feed shortage for poor farmer who cannot rear large ruminant only for feed cost. Use of WH in cattle diet with rice straw would help to solve feed crisis, improve animal health and gradually increase the farmer`s income. By this process the animal protein (meat and milk) will increase and alleviate the deficit protein demand for human being. ····· 10361114564

The lower yield can be attributed to several factors including damage caused by charcoal rot (Macrophomina phaseolina). Charcoal rot affected plants are characterized by a grey-to-black discoloration at the base of stem which extends upwards thus hollowing the interior portions. Charcoal rot disease affect the yield of sunflower and had a great impact on the yield attributes. There were three treatments applied in the field on sunflower accessions. Treatment 3 was kept as control treatment. While in treatment 1 the seeds were treated with fungicides before sowing and impact of fungicides was measured. The disease was not controlled fully but prevent the accessions from sever attack of disease affect and reduced the loss of yield of sunflower and all the accessions of treatment 2 were inoculated with fungus showed much susceptibility. So it is concluded that the sunflower crop should be saved from charcoal rot disease if applied fungicides and then make care of field in regard to pullout the affected plants those expressing the disease in early stages. ····· 10361114404

It is now recognised as a serious threat to human health, as a consequence of consumption of contaminated plant material. If people continuously use As-contaminated food, vegetables and water, thousands will die or lose their health within a few decades. Moreover, As-toxicity towards plants may pose threats to plant establishment, particularly in revegetation of contaminated sites. But, till now, little attention has been given to the risk of As-contamination in plants. On the other hand, significant attention has received by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), due to their potential benefits to host plants by enhancing plant nutrient uptake and increasing tolerance to adverse conditions. Arsenate acts as a phosphate analogue and the arsenate and phosphate transport interaction, strongly suggest the influence of AMF on the arsenate uptake. Hence, the purpose of this book is to highlight the responses of valuable agricultural crops under different level of arsenic as well as the influences of AMF on crop growth in As-contaminated soil. ····· 10361114231

Applying it to animal development, this theory appears to provide an explanation for the occurrence and timing of the Cambrian explosion. Applying it to trade networks, this theory predicts that globalized economy is more sensitive to recessions. During my PhD I systematically characterised the nature of these developmental abnormalities and examined the effects of L-DOPA (a precursor in melanin/dopamine synthesis pathways that is thought to be depleted in the albino retina) on patterns of cell division. The findings were consistent with a model in which reduced levels of L-DOPA in the albino retina lead to spatiotemporal defects in patterns of cell division, potentially as a result of secondary consequences on concentrations of retinal dopamine. ····· 10361113917

Among many other factors of low yield in wheat, one of the most serious but less addressed causes is the presence of weeds. Weeds compete with crops for nutrients, light, space, moisture and cause reduction in wheat vigor, tillering, head size, kernel weight. Weeds lower the market value of the produce and hence bring economic losses to the growers. Chemical weed control is preferred over other weed control methods like manual weeding, mechanical weeding, intercropping, crop rotation and stale seed bed technique because it is quick, more effective and relatively cheaper. Grassy (narrow leaved) weeds like Phalaris minor, Avena fatua, Hordeum vulgare and Cyperus rotandus are the serious problem in wheat. This book describes identification of different grassy weeds present in wheat fields and most economical herbicides for controlling these weeds, especially against P. minor. ····· 10361113886

Allergic reactions are commonly related with proteins, known as allergens. However, it is known that extrinsic factors can also play a role in allergic processes. The allergenicity of the protein Ber e 1, the major allergen from Brazil nuts, is well established. This study investigated the role that lipids from Brazil nut play in the development of an allergic process towards Ber e 1. Using an animal model of allergy, Ber e 1 was tested alone or in the presence of different fractions of lipids. Ber e 1 alone did not induce the production of anaphylactic antibodies, whereas one specific fraction of Brazil nut lipids was able to induce the production of anaphylactic antibodies. Animals lacking natural killer T (NKT) cells produced lower titers of anaphylactic antibodies comparing to animals presenting this cell type. In conclusion, our findings indicate that natural lipids are essential for the development of Brazil nut allergy and that the immune response induced by lipids involves NKT cells. ····· 10361113835

A promising step in treating defective cartilage is the implantation of autologous bone marrow stem cells at the defect site. When carried by an appropriate scaffold to provide chondrogenic signals, bone marrow stem cells can differentiate into cartilage. Previous studies show that cells seeded in hydrogels without the inclusion of fibers experience cell-mediated contraction that leads swiftly to cell mediated death the fibers are also considered key to improving mechanical strength of hydrogels. However, after three weeks in vitro in a collagen gel 3-D matrix, cells seeded in gels without fibers did not have significantly different cell viability percentages than cells seeded in gels with flat fibers or round fibers. Additionally, compressive testing at 10% strain indicated that the equilibrium stresses of gels with no fibers was significantly higher than equilibrium stresses of gels containing flat fibers. Therefore, the inclusion of fibers and the use of compressive stimulation conditioning may not be any more effective than simple tissue engineered constructs of cell-seeded collagen gels. ····· 10361113557· 1 · ::::: · 10 ·· 11 ·· 12 ·· 13 ·· 14 ·· 15 ·· 16 · ::::: · 36 ·
