The different transitions from cell division to apoptosis are recently under extensive investigations. Apoptosis is a generally controlled mechanism of cell death that is essential for the elimination of cells that can no longer replicate or that have potentially mutagenic damage during normal development and for the maintenance of tissue homeostasis. Research in and around apoptosis has increased substantially since the early 1990s. In addition to its importance as a biological phenomenon, defective apoptotic processes have been implicated in an extensive variety of diseases. Development of drug resistance in tumor cells is common occurrence, and is the primary reason for failure of chemotherapy. A number of biochemical changes could contribute to the development of cellular resistance to chemotherapy. The book is the outgrowth of Ph.D. dissertation that shed the light on new mechanisms that might contribute to cancer development and/or progression and elucidate molecular based-variation that is important from both basic and clinical perspectives. ····· 1036121196

Phytochemical contents and some physical parameters of the herbal medicinal preparations were also determined. The antibacterial activities of the methanolic herbal extracts were compared with those of some antibiotics commonly prescribed in the studied area. The results showed that the bacterial load and the rate of occurrence of selected pathogenic bacteria in the herbal preparations varied considerably and well above recommended levels. Pathogenic bacteria such as Salmonella typhi, Shigella spp, E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus were the most frequently isolated . The physical parameters such as moisture content and PH of the preparations were observed to be positively correlated with the bacterial load. Phytochemicals such as carbohydrates, tannins, Alkaloids, saponins, anthraquinones, flavonoids and cardiac glycosides were identified. All the tested antibiotics had inhibitory activities on the test bacterial isolates at various minimum inhibitory concentrations. ····· 1036121104

Similar to the other dipterans, the developmental stages of C. megacephala is prone to alter in response to environmental conditions. However, the possible influences of the environmental conditions prevailing in tropical countries like Malaysia on the development of this species have not been reported. In addition, malathion being the most prevalent poison used for suicidal purposes in many countries including Malaysia, its influence on the larvae of C. megacephala and the possible impact on death investigations deserve to be studied. Considering the potential scope for utilizing entomological data in practical crime investigations in Malaysia, this research was designed covering the two broad aspects relating to estimating postmortem interval and determining death due to malathion. ····· 1036120913

Although there were lots of books on transgenic plants, I realized none of them placed an emphasis on showing the simple and easily understandable way of commencing and continuing the generation of transgenic plant. I had been dreaming to write a text book that would be very useful to a beginner who is doing genetic engineering research. Knowledge of transgenic organisms is becoming increasingly important for the successful survival of diverse plants and animals. This gene modifying (DNA recombinant) technology is efficiently used by human to meet the present need such as production of food and to create quality out puts. I hope this book provides a better understanding of the research methods in GM plants and help the budding bio-technologists to troubleshoot the issues. Many insects synthesize their indigenous exo-cellulases and cellobiases, but few can synthesize endo-cellulases. Several insect cellulases have been purified and characterized. A diverse assemblage of protozoan, fungal, and bacterial species living in the guts of insects produces cellulases. In nature, some plants can protect themselves against pests by synthesizing the specific macromolecules in form of cellulase inhibitors. Tribolium castaneum belongs to Coleoptera is economically important species of beetle attacks stored grain products such as flour, cereals, meal, crackers, beans, spices, pasta, cake mix, dried pet food, dried flowers, chocolate, nuts, seeds, and even dried museum specimens. It uses its cellulase and amylases for digestion of food material and use it as energy source. Epicuticular waxes plays very important role in hindering the attachment of insects to the leaves. In this study the wax deficient mutant plants GaWM3 were used as experimental plants while Gossypium arboreum (786) were used as negatively controlled plants as it is reported that whitefly can not transmit virus in it and G. hirsutum (MNH-93) were taken as negative and positive control plants because it has severe viral attack in past. It is important to mention here that GaWM3 were produced in our laboratory at CEMB from Gossypium arboreum (786) with the only difference of having 50% less wax than Gossypium arboreum (786). It was found that the G. hirsutum (MNH-93) was CLCuV positive and G. arboreum (786) was CLCuV negative. But most strikingly the wax deficient GaWM3 mutant plants which contain 50% less than G. arboreum (786) wax were CLCuV positive while the plants from which these mutants were made (G. arboreum ,786) were CLCuV negative. Hydrocarbons from plants were propounded, as a source of bio-fuel, by famous Nobel laureate Professor Melvin Calvin, who initiated the researches on Euphorbia lathyris in U.S.A. and encouraged Professor Ashwani Kumar to carry out work on this plant in semi-arid and arid regions of Rajasthan which are similar to Arizona in several respects. The hydrocarbons which contain around 30 per cent tri-terpenoids can be converted in to biodiesel. Our group has carried out investigations in this field for the last 30 years and the present book is pioneer work on improving growth, hydrocarbon yield and productivity of Euphorbia lathyris . The covalent alteration of histone tails has regulatory roles in various nuclear processes, such as organization of transcription and mitotic chromosome condensation. Among the different groups of enzymes identified to catalyze the covalent modification, the most topical additions are the histone methyltransferases (HMTases), whose functions are now being characterized. G9A is a novel mammalian HMTase that prefer lysine. A molecular marker is the change in nucleic acid sequence or conformation which can be utilized for identification or classification of an individual. Molecular markers directly reveal the polymorphism at the level of DNA. These are tags that can be used to identify specific genes and locate them in relation to other genes. The use of molecular markers is indispensable for the establishment of core collections and characterization of garlic accessions. Molecular markers such as DNA fingerprinting and AFLPs have been used to detect duplicated accessions in Garlic collections. Moreover, molecular markers have been used for detection of somaclonal variants generated by in vitro culture of garlic, for determination of fertile clones in garlic, disease resistance and clones producing S-amino acids. In order to link more quality traits in garlic we need to develop more versatile markers in this crop which will be further utilized for gene mapping and gene transfer technology. ····· 1036120464

In ovaries, Tsh and Hedgehog (Hh) are co-expressed in the terminal filament and cap cells. The characterisation of a new tsh mutation causing female sterility allowed us to show that Tsh acts via Hh-mediated signalling pathway to control FSC proliferation. In this tsh background, the hsGal4 driven expression of tsh or hh partially rescues the abnormal phenotype allowing oogenesis progression. Furthermore, tsh overexpression mimics the hh overexpression associated phenotype. In neuroblasts, mutant tsh alleles are unable to exit mitosis. The phenotypes of double mutants with rod or bub1 resemble the tsh single mutant phenotype, suggesting failure to escape mitosis. Finally, tsh depletion in S2 cells mimics the tsh mutant phenotype in neuroblasts. We propose that during oogenesis, tsh affects FSC proliferation mediating Hh expression. In neuroblasts, tsh may also acts through Hh signalling, since expression of interference hedgehog, was severely downregulated in our DNA microarray analysis. ····· 1036120040

Practical solutions to the water quality deterioration and management of fish resource in the polluted waters may come from the detailed and comparative studies on the natural detoxication mechanisms of aquatic organisms.
