AIDS has been known to have a wide variety of systemic manifestations but the associated psychiatric problems go undetected by the treating physicians. Out of the 100 patients assessed, 36% patients had neurological manifestations, with 47 neurological events. Meningitis was most common (19 patients) followed by mass lesions in 6. Psychiatric symptoms were seen in 78%. Depression was most common (45 patients) , followed by anxiety in 25 and adjustment disorder in 6. These AIDS related mental disturbances could be attributed to the psychological reactions to systemic illnesses, effects of psychosocial stressors associated with the disease or opportunistic infections of the central nervous system. ····· 10361102677

Neuroprotection and Cerebral Malaria

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
There are at least 300 million cases of malaria each year, resulting in more than a million deaths. Cerebral malaria is the most severe complication of malaria especially in young African children. Besides drug resistance, another challenge in the fight against malaria is the protective treatment of the host combined to the conventional antimalarial treatment. This opportunity came with the consideration of cerebral malaria residual case fatality rate of about 20%, despite a timely adequate antimalarial treatment. This work describes the available experimental model of cerebral malaria, the place of neuroprotective therapies in this disease and the efficacy of two neuroprotective drugs, recombinant erythropoietin and statins, during experimental cerebral malaria. Last, a proof- of-concept study documented the relevance of neuroprotection during human cerebral malaria in endemic area. This work should give new insights in medical practices. It should be especially useful to clinicians involved in critical care, infectious diseases, or neurological diseases. ····· 10361102650

It is important to note that one fifth of the world`s population comprises of adolescents and 87 percent of them live in developing countries and half of them are poor. The adolescents of today are said to be the largest ever generation in human history .Hence, adolescents as a group merit special attention not only in view of sheer numbers but also of vulnerable age. While on one hand there are problems of over - consumption leading to obesity and its resultant complications, on the other hand problems of under consumption are leading to dietary inadequacies and micro and macro nutrient deficiency disorders. These dietary imbalances coupled with other hiatuses of the technology such as greater affluence, rapid urbanization, unhealthy lifestyle patterns, reduction in the daily physical activity, work related stress, increased alcoholic and tobacco consumption have led to the development of diet related chronic degenerative disorders. Grain amaranth (Amaranthus caudatus L.) an underutilized plant has recently gained attention as a supplementary food crop with a potential for the future. ····· 10361102637

Nervous Control of Hemodynamic and Excretory Functions in Renal Disease

für 71.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
The present work by Salman highlights the role of the renal sympathetic nerves in the regulation of kidney functions and determines how the normal regulatory systems are disturbed during the pathology of renal failure and diabetes. Using animal models of these diseases, the mediated reductions in renal hemodynamic and excretory functions were characterized and evaluated prior to and directly after the induction of acute renal denervation. Data from this research provided experimental evidence that augmented renal sympathetic nerve activity is an early consequence of some pathological states affecting the kidney and that the contributory role of the renal sympathetic nervous system towards the observed derangements in renal indices is of major importance and requires further attention. Therefore, it is suggested that a reduction in the renal sympathetic basal tone is likely to forbid or at least reduce the occurrence of future renal complications. ····· 10361102560

This study aimed to investigate the impact that the diagnosis of cancer has on the relationship of couples where one of the partners have been diagnosed with cancer. In order to achieve this, the study explored the elements in the cancer process that were most difficult for couples to cope with and what supported them most in coping. There are already many stressors in couples` lives without the added stress of cancer. When cancer is diagnosed in one of the partners, the couple is exposed to extraordinary challenges that they had never encountered before. It changes the appearance and the quality of the relationship. Their lives are disrupted by changes in all aspects. It was observed that the relationships of the couples were not adequately attended to during the cancer process. The study therefore attempted to assist couples and their medical teams to better understand some of the particular factors that could impinge on the relationship between patient and partner. Couple participants were purposively selected. The study used qualitative methods to elicit thoughts and attitudes of couples experiencing the cancer process. ····· 10361102525

Repair of duodenal fistula with Rectus Abdominis Musculo-Peritoneal (RAMP) flap

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Defects in the duodenal wall caused by trauma, giant perforation and duodenal fistula are technically difficult to repair and associated with high morbidity and mortality. Usually the defect can be closed primarily but in above mentioned conditions large defects are difficult to repair. Majority of duodenal perforations are closed best by omental patch. At such times, one has to use other techniques of managing the problem. In such cases various technically demanding operations have been proposed. Apart from more challenging surgical procedures, the pedicled flap of rectus abdominis muscle along with peritoneum (RAMP) for repair of duodenal defect may be an alternative in the treatment of high-risk patients. This flap is easy to construct and can cover large defect in the duodenal wall without any serious complications. Flap contains adequate blood supply, which help in healing of duodenal wall defect with excellent results. With these considerations in mind we investigated the results of RAMP flap for repair of large duodenal wall defect. This book is useful for trainee as well as practicing surgeons. ····· 10361102453

Invasive fungal infections (IFIs) demand a tremendous levy in terms of human life and healthcare costs, despite the fact that fungal diseases are still under-diagnosed and under reported. Several factors such as patient characteristics, antifungal prophylaxis and others appear to have contributed to a change in the spectrum of invasive fungal pathogens (i.e. Candida species, Non-Candida species, Aspergillus species and Non-Aspergillus species). Therefore, it is important to recognize and minimize the major risk factors associated with infection, and expanding the antifungal drug research for new antifungal agents to treat life-threatening invasive infections. This book would highlight past and current research on fungal pathogens and antifungal therapies, and also novel targets for antifungal agents for future development in medical practice to prevent invasive fungal infections. The book will describe novel antifungal agents, its targets, and various development phases and potential benefits of combination therapy. ····· 10361102374

Microcephaly (congenital-postnatal, primary- secondary, isolated-multiple) is a heterogeneous congenital abnormality from clinical, pathogenetical and etiological aspects. We re- evaluated 82 patients with microcephaly. Patients were classified pathogenetically into primary and secondary and morphologically into isolated and multiple congenital abnormalities associated with microcepahly. This study demonstrated the clinical, neurologic, anthropometric features, recurrence risk and prenatal diagnosis for the different subgroups of microcephaly. Further, It presented the association of epilepsy, the EEG changes and control to anti-epileptic drugs with the different groups of microcephaly. We believe that the use of such classification will help in understanding, dealing with this heterogeneous disorder, application of the molecular testing and genetic counseling. In addition, this population-based study showed that the high parity, the low socio-economic status, the strong intrauterine growth retardation and the high fever related influenza increased significantly the risk of microcephaly. ····· 10361102361

It is assumed that autistic children suffer from gastrointestinal disorders more often than their peers. Children with ASD are diagnosed with platelet hyperserotoninemia more often than other children. Some gastroenterological disorders manifest themselves in parallel with dysfunctional serotoninergic neurotransmission in the gastrointestinal tract. The aim of this study was to compare the frequency of gastrointestinal problems in autistic children and in the control group and to establish the expression of 5-HT2A serotonin receptor mRNA in autistic children. Based on the performed research the following conclusions were drawn: autistic children report gastrointestinal disorders significantly more often than their peers. The disorders are confirmed through histopathological examination. Gastrological awareness should be maintained in autistic children. The considerably higher level of platelet 5-HT2A receptor mRNA indicates a molecular background of serotonin disorders. ····· 10361102270

There is a hypothesis that a subgroup of patients with reversal of systolic dysfunction following hemodialysis have fluid overload. However, the underlying pathology has not been understood in those patients without significant fluid overload. Inflammatory markers have been found to be raised in chronic kidney disease, which prompts the theory for an underlying inflammatory pathology as a cause of reversible cardiac dysfunction in this group of patients. We studied 52 patients with chronic kidney disease. There were 29 patients with systolic dysfunction. Twenty three patients with preserved systolic function, had diastolic dysfunction. Of the 29 patients with systolic dysfunction, 10 patients had significant improvement in NYHA functional class, left ventricular dimensions, left ventricular ejection fraction . None of the patients had significant changes in dry weight. These patients had the highest baseline serum levels of troponin I which decreased significantly with recovery of cardiac function along with the c reactive protein levels. Those patients with C reactive protein greater than median change had significant improvements in LVIDs and EF. ····· 10361102077

The study focuses on how care and support around HIV/AIDS is perceived by volunteer community workers in Kwangcolosi, Kwazulu Natal. Using the social capital framework, the dissertation seeks to understand and illuminate the existing care and support efforts from the community from the perspective of volunteer caregivers. It emanates from the realization that government efforts in the area of care and support for those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS in most rural or peri-urban areas are usually insufficient. Community or family members usually have to step in to fill this gap but their efforts are seldom documented, let alone recognized. These community initiatives have been defined in the wider concept of social capital. The study sought to explore the perceptions of volunteer community workers on care and support provided to people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs). The social capital framework and specifically the levels of bonding and bridging and the elements of trust, norms, reciprocity and social networks that act as resources for collective action was used to inform the understanding of these collective community efforts.. ····· 10361101923

Merozoite surface protein MSP2 is avaccine candidate antigen of Plasmodium falciparum that is polymorphic in natural populations. In this study we aimed to investigate whether malaria infection in associated with anti-malaria specific IgG, using recombinant proteins derived from the two major allelic types of MSP2 and ABO blood group. The conclusion is the Higher anti-malarial IgG1, IgG3, IgG2 and lower levels of IgG4 were associated with reduced risk of malaria infection. IgG2 is activator of the classical complement pathway, Fc RIIa H131 is essential for handling IgG2 immune complexes. These data suggest that an MSP2 based vaccine should be designed to induce high level antibody responses against the different MSP2 types present globally in P. falciparum populations and that MSP2 could be combined with other P. falciparum antigens to form a multi-component malaria vaccine. ····· 10361101853
