A total of 118 children aged below 60 months were targeted for the study. A descriptive cross sectional study was conducted. Sampling was done using purposive non probability and systematic sampling. The method that was used for data collection was interview and the tools which were utilised were questionnaires and anthropometric equipments (weighing scale and height/length board). The data was collected and entered into computer packages for analysis and presentation. The SPSS statistical program was used for analysis of the factors while the anthropometric statistical program was used to convert raw anthropometric data into anthropometric indices and then was compared with the National centre Health statistics (NCHS) reference figures. The prevalence of underweight, stunting, and wasting was 59.3% 53.3% and 33.9% respectively. There was a significant relation between stunting and complementary feeding and wastingwith the type of alternative caregiver. ····· 1036199083

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)infection in Pakistan

für 53.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Pakistan still has a window of opportunity to act decisively to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. According to UNAIDS estimates HIV prevalence is 0.1 percent among adult population in Pakistan. The officially reported cases are, however, much lower than the estimated cases. As in many countries, underreporting is due mainly to the social stigma attached to the infection, limited surveillance and voluntary counseling and testing systems, as well as the lack of knowledge among the general population and health practitioners. Until recently, Pakistan was classified as a low-prevalence country with many risk factors that could lead to the rapid development of an epidemic. The presence of significant risk factors such as the very low use of condoms among vulnerable populations including female sex workers (FSW), men who have sex with men (MSMs), truckers, and Hijras, low use of sterile syringes among injecting drug users (IDUs), inadequate blood transfusion screening and high level of professional donors, large numbers of migrants and refugees may lead to an epidemic situation of HIV/AIDS in Pakistan. ····· 1036199002

Factors Affecting Intake of Fruits and Vegetables

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Fruits and vegetables have very significant roles in human nutrition in addition to their functional role, being a vital source of vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber and hence primordial to maintain or achieve good health. Ideally, a variety of fruits and vegetables must be consumed such that several nutrients are present in order to act together and maintains the proper functioning of the body. Indeed, currently more and more individuals are becoming health-conscious resulting in thorough assessment of the benefits of fruits and vegetables in relation to health. Nonetheless, it is also of no denying that many developing as well as developed countries have a low recommended intake of fruits and vegetables. To this effect, this book has been geared to address factors determining the intake of fruits and vegetables in a multicultural and developing country like Mauritius. Much emphasis has been laid on possible associations between demographic factors, food insecurity, intra- and inter-personal factors with respect to the frequency of fruits and vegetables intake and in a panoply of social settings. ····· 1036198825

Socio-demographic Factors in Selected Eating Practices

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Eating practices (EP) are important factors to consider in public health nutrition as people eat every day and throughout the day. Therefore, observing EP may give an idea of the nutritional status of individuals in the population. Indeed, certain EP may predict future health problems, such as high fast food consumption and obesity in certain developed countries. Other practices may be a form of prophylactic for certain diseases such as postulated in the French paradox. To this effect, studying EP within a population is complex due to the multiplicity of different factors which are involved in the process of choosing, acquiring, preparing and consuming food. While the number of non-communicable diseases is on the rise in many countries, there is an ever-growing need to gain information on the underlying nutritional causes to these diseases. In view of the fact that there is a dearth of literature pertaining to socio-demographic factors and EP in developing countries, this book therefore lay much emphasis on recent findings on this issue and explores the different eating practices in a multicultural and developing country like Mauritius. ····· 1036198643

In India, more than 60 species of venomous snakes are found from Himalayas down to Cape Comorin and snake bite envenoming is an ever present occupational risk and environmental hazard. According to WHO direct estimates India has the highest number of deaths due to snake bites in the world with 35,000 50,000 people dying per year. Clinicians have for a long time witnessed the tragic neglect of snake bite patients because of many associated myths, mainly propagated by cinema and TV serials. People believe that snakes take revenge against those who harmed them in previous births and also cutting across all distinction between rich or poor, educated or illiterate, it is an ingrained belief that belligerent snake should be burnt after killing as the picture of its killer gets recorded in the eyes of it. Later, the female snake identifies the killer by seeing the eyes of the killed snake and take revenge. Hence the snake is usually not available to identify its species. Further, due to deep rooted superstitions and strong beliefs people often resort to unscientific and traditional methods of management thus causing significant delay in arriving at health care centers. ····· 1036198374

Rapid Identification of Mycobacterial species by PCR

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Tuberculosis is devastating disease at global level. TB is caused by members of Mycobaterium tuberculosis complex group. Presently available biochemical methods of diagnosis of tuberculosis are not accurate. The highly sensitive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and specific molecular probes techniques are major advances in early diagnosis and molecular epidemiology of various diseases including TB. It is established that the ribosomal gene region of both the prokaryotic and eukaryotic comprise of sequences that are conserved during evolution interspersed with sequence which are divergent. The analysis of the 16S rRNA gene promoter region for rapid and accurate differentiation and identification of Mycobacterial species and understanding of their phylogenetic relationships is likely to prove to be advantageous over the use of previously used target genes. The resulting sensitivity is likely to allow the generation of RFLP patterns in a matter of hours to differentiate not only between the species investigated in the present study but others as well, by possible detection of novel RFLP patterns. For unidentified cases, PCR product could be characterized by subsequent sequencing. ····· 1036192520

Physicians are often facing the task of predicting the immediate and long-term outcome in stroke patients. Early predictor of mortality and poor outcome are crucial for planning the level of care and optimizing resource utilization. The performance of Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) in prediction of mortality of acute stroke patients was investigated. During the study period every patient admitted to Medicine and Neuro-medicine wards for cerebral infarction (CI) or intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), were included consecutively in this study. Data for GCS was recorded, follow up and mortality at 7 days and 28 days was determined. Total GCS were labeled into three groups (I, II, III). Prognosis of patients in 7-day and 28-day of 3 groups was tested by chi square (x2) test. On the basis of CT scan finding, one-week case fatality of ICH and CI was 44.8% and 36.4% respectively. Four-week case fatality of ICH and CI was 56.7% and 42.4% respectively. This study shows, GCS is a valuable tool for prediction of short-term mortality in acute stroke patients. The less the GCS score at the onset of acute stroke the more is mortality. ····· 1036192114

Prior to the development of exchange lists in 1950, meal planning for persons in the United States with diabetes was chaotic, with no agreement among the major organizations involved with diabetes and nutrition. To solve this problem, the concept of `exchange,` or `substitution,` of similar foods was developed by the American Dietetic Association, the American Diabetes Association, and the U.S. Public Health Service. The world needs good book and research on this subject. Type-II diabetes, the sort that used to be called maturity onset diabetes or adult onset diabetes , cannot be known by that name any longer. It no longer only affects mature and adult people it also affects young adults, teenagers and children as young as 8 or 9. The management of Types-II diabetes involves behavioral change and behavioral change is best achieved through structured care and education. This study tackles these issues head on. It is indispensable for more comprehensive and intensive approach to diabetic care for the sake of keeping people away from this epidemic. ····· 1036189197
