Greene`s psychology and his religious beliefs, it is argued, were inextricably intertwined and resulted in his fascination for life on `the edge of things` and in his penchant for danger and life-threatening situations. The origins and development of Greene`s fictional world are traced in what should prove a useful and thought-provoking perspective for students of Graham Greene, Catholic writers and twentieth century fiction. ····· 10361115982

The study conducted empirical investigations over two stages. In the first stage, the rank order of the most important strategies was obtained. In the second stage, 296 EFL students were randomly divided into two groups: an experimental group that was exposed to the 10 pre-selected motivational strategies in their classes by seven teachers, and a control group in which another seven teachers followed the traditional way of teaching. Motivation questionnaires as well as classroom observations and teacher post-lesson evaluation protocols were used to assess the teachers` motivational practices and students` motivated behaviours in the classroom at the start and the end of the experimental period. The statistical analyses of the collected data clearly showed a significant rise in motivational levels for students in the experimental, but not the control group. This study could be of potential interest and help for researchers in the field of linguistics and second/foreign language acquisition as well as for ESL/EFL teachers. ····· 10361115938

Stretching across time and geographical space, the narrative modes of 18th and 19th century sensibility infiltrate even the most satirical of `modern` reform narratives. From Charles Dickens to Tim Dorsey, Reforming the Politics of Sensibility traces a trajectory of politically-minded authors whose texts reflect the shifting conflict between reformative aims and sentimental modes. Suggesting that each author`s relationship to the sentimental sets the tone for the sociopolitical work of his novel, Dowd illustrates important relationships between seeming opposites: sensibility, satire, melodrama, and postmodernism. Her book asks us to consider the complicated interaction of these genres in the sociopolitical efficacy of fiction. By examining sentimental modes through Orwell`s 1984, Vonnegut`s God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, and Dorsey`s Florida Roadkill, Dowd demonstrates the roll sentimental modes continue to play in the political quietism so dissatisfying to critics of popular fiction. ····· 10361115861

The other` is also all the things that the West does not stand for or is not familiar with. This attitude, famously defined as Orientalism` by Edward Said has shaped Western writings on India. However, the way the writers in the East have historically viewed the West` has not been given the attention it deserves. The book Shifting Images examines the ambivalence and the anxieties on the part of the Indian writers who sought to negotiate between the East and the West in their autobiographies/travelogues and discover patterns underlying them. It shows how the eastern world has projected the complex and many layered views of the West. Most Indian writers in English thought of England as an ideal land and longed to visit it some day. Some of them eventually came to settle in this land. Some of them went to this hallowed` land as visitors. Each one had his own idea of England/West. Shifting Images is an attempt to offer an insight into the complex and shifting relations between the East and the West. ····· 10361115806

This study investigates the influence of L1 LPs on the processing of L2 words in sentential contexts by Persian learners of English. The focus was on cases where two different senses of a polysemous word in Persian are realized by two independent words in English. The participants were presented with two types of anomalous sentences: test sentences in which one of the two English words was used in a context where the other word was appropriate and control sentences in which the same word was used in a context where neither of the two words was appropriate. The participants were asked to judge, as quickly and accurately as possible, whether the final word could complete the sentence meaningfully or whether the final word was semantically unacceptable. The participants` reaction times for correct No responses and their error rates were recorded. A main effect of sentence type and an interaction between sentence type and proficiency level were obtained in the analysis of both RTs and errors. This work has shown that combat poetics in African Literature is the product of the crises engendered by the historical contradictions of imperialist ideologies of colonialism and neo-colonialism. These contradictions gravitate to cataclysmic socio-psychological,socio-political and socio-economic anomie that betide the referent societies that nurture the selected novels for this work. The thesis of the work, therefore,is that this revolutionary consciousness makes it necessary for African novelists to enlist their creative works in battle against the forces of oppression and consequently stimulate efforts towards the realisation of a qualitative higher democratic social life. ····· 10361115623

It also serves as a tool for renewal of one`s perception towards nature. It is a well known fact that in an ecosystem each creature is interdependent in their biological functioning. Disturbance of this natural equilibrium may lead even to the extinction of entire ecosystem. People think that they are in no way connected to environmental degradation, but truth is different. This work substantiates the fact that it is impossible for man to overcome the laws of nature. If he makes such an attempt, he is bound to fail. The culture grows, but the nature perishes which is evidenced in the text. Hence, the primary aim of this study is to differentiate the anthropocentric approach from ecocentric approach thereby attempting to change ego-consciousness to eco-consciousness. ····· 10361115557

Al-Daif`s work breaks the boundaries of genre. He is a unique voice merging Arabic and Western literary traditions, combining several contemporary writing trends to create his vision of a chaotic world, resultantly flooded with people with fragmented identities. He is the eccentric, neurotic voice screaming in the wilderness, blurring timelines to depict the angst of the human psyche. His novels are almost plot-less interior monologues highlighting the dominance of subjectivity. His quest is for answers that can`t be found, for new tools to describe the ruptured world and new criteria upon which to build a definition of unified, complete identity. It challenges scientific empirical dialectics which interpret space` as divorced from human existence. This book explores the dynamics of spatial construction by Alamgir Hashmi, a Pakistani poet writing in English. He employs three major spatial constructs: frames, ekphrasis and the palimpsest. Structural frames such as windows, doors and photographs re-present public and private spaces. Mythical, literary and religious frames of reference effect an intrusion into existing narrative spaces, and reframe, contest and appropriate them. Ekphrasis is used to give voice to silent works of art. Hashmi also attempts a palimpsest reading of seasonal and catastrophic erasure, writing and rewriting on landscape and the ecriture of conquest on the Indo Pak Subcontinent. He reads bicultural layers of memory inscribed by western experience to show the impact of cross cultural trends on the oriental consciousness. This analysis would help professionals in the areas of critical theory, literature and history who acknowledge the paradox that reality is best apprehended through illusion. ····· 10361115107

The selection of examples is explored from an educational point of view: what makes an example helpful to the L2 student from a teaching perspective This approach was taken as selecting examples from a dictionary or randomly from a corpus has several drawbacks (limited number of dictionary examples, no consideration of context, unclear rationale behind the example selection). The book presents a selection process that takes into account the following characteristics of helpful examples as suggested by teacher data: (a) reduced syntactic complexity, (b) sentence similarity, (c) significant co-occurrences and (d) semantically related words. Models based on these dimensions are developed and evaluated through empirical studies with teachers and students. The results of the teacher evaluation are encouraging: for one of the models, the top-ranked selections perform as well as dictionary examples. The model also provides an example ranking that roughly corresponds to that of experienced teachers. The student evaluation confirms and even improves on these results. ····· 10361114820

The book comprises a study of this right, and of the legal basis to it, together with an explanation of its vital importance during criminal procedures. This right was recognised under the European Convention of Human Rights, of which Malta is a signatory. The author verifies whether it is respected in practice, and whether the protection provided is sufficient. What safeguards exist to ensure proper interpreting during criminal procedures As yet, none formally exist under Maltese Law. Interpreting is only considered as an adjunct to the legal profession, and is not recognised as a profession in its own right. As a consequence, court interpreting remains unregulated and unmonitored. Any person professing to be bilingual can be engaged as court interpreter, even during criminal procedures.
