A parallel study of developments in the field within the European Union, and of developments on other continents is also made. Legal Interpreting, and more particularly, Court Interpreting, is recognised as a right and protected under Maltese Law. The book comprises a study of this right, and of the legal basis to it, together with an explanation of its vital importance during criminal procedures. This right was recognised under the European Convention of Human Rights, of which Malta is a signatory. The author verifies whether it is respected in practice, and whether the protection provided is sufficient. What safeguards exist to ensure proper interpreting during criminal procedures As yet, none formally exist under Maltese Law. Interpreting is only considered as an adjunct to the legal profession, and is not recognised as a profession in its own right. As a consequence, court interpreting remains unregulated and unmonitored. Any person professing to be bilingual can be engaged as court interpreter, even during criminal procedures. This could very easily lead to the very injustice the Law means to prevent. ····· 10361114696

In a vivid story that recollects the details of these events, Rowlandson attempts to impart a message to her community through the use of three existing literary devices. The genre of the `captivity narrative` that evolved is a distinct literary mode developed as a confluence of these: spiritual autobiography, a documentary method meant to archive spiritual and emotional growth through a record of daily activities the conversion narrative, which made public one`s theological assurance of God`s grace and the jeremiad, a sermon form designed to remind Puritans of their Covenant with God. To her contemporaries, Rowlandson served as an example of God`s Providence. To later generations and specifically twenty-first century scholars, she represents the voice of a new genre of storytelling. ····· 10361114555

Murphy probes with literate skill the cracks and fissures inside us all and illuminates our sometimes precarious grip on modern life. In two stories, cracks open up on the water. In the first, a young man goes fishing and catches more than he bargained for. In the second, a sailor in a foreign port suddenly finds himself with a friend who is running amok. Another fissure develops on two journeys. On one, a father tries to save his son from a woman the son can`t get free of, and on the other, a mother crosses Florida on her final trip with her challenged child, a child she is now too old to tend. The last crack involves two stories of difficult love. In the first, a young widow tries to make amends with her dead husband, and in the second, a boy and his step-sister take their love for each other too far. This book is filled with stories of journeys, of loss and recovery, of love given and received. The focus of this work is on two newly published books: The Lore of the Arabian Nights and Critiques in Art. The critical analysis of Rihani`s work is worth perusing because its subject proves to be a visionary orator whose prophetic ideas are more applicable today than they were a century ago. Highlighting Rihani`s criticism is crucial nowadays because he offered numerous practical solutions to solve economic, social, religious, and political conflicts that affect the Middle East. In the literary world, many Jewish writers have adopted the problem of Jewish identity as their main theme. While some of these writers try to preserve and restore the Jewish heritage in their fiction, some others depict the identity crisis and the protest of the Jewish self`s against traditional Jewishness in the American WASP society. Philip Roth, one of the prominent writers of the Jewish novel tradition, deals with the problematic aspects of being a Jewish in the multiculturalistic structure of America. Refugee children are particularly vulnerable because not only are they faced by these forces, but they are also dislocated from their homes of origin. As a result of this dislocation,most refugee children occupy an indefinite space`- a psychological state of waiting for life to become normal again. For refugee children, the sense of identity largely associated with geographical locatedness and permanence is dismantled by the reality of living in that space` between their home country and the hoped for future resettlement country or a future return to the original home country or perhaps integration and settling in the host country. A pertinent question that arises from the above situation is how refugee children perceive their identity in such circumstances. This book therefore examines how refugee children use personal oral narratives to construct their identity within the context of globalization. This book should be of interest to literary scholars especially those interested in narrative studies. Professionals dealing with refugee children should also find it of interest. ····· 10361114046

It argues that the presence of taboo words and euphemisms in Ndebele language often results in changes in the meaning of words. It is observed that changes that occur on the meaning of such words are often a result of the Ndebele people`s perception of the referred subjects. Thus it is argued that language change can be influenced by the culture of a people. As a result the affected words may be extended, that is broadening the meaning, or the meaning may be narrowed. Words may also become unfavorable and fall off. The subjects of death and sexuality are used to demonstrate the changes in meanings of words. These are subjects that are surrounded by a lot of taboo words and euphemisms and the nature of such subjects calls for the use of avoidances. ····· 10361113710

Actually, when it comes to the translation of traditional novels, most losses are the result of translators inadequate foregrounding awareness, which leads to a failure of representing the original foregrounding stylistic effects. This book, by means of comparison and contrast of the three Chinese translations of The Picture of Dorian Gray, is intended to demonstrate that translators should pay special attention to various foregrounding devices in source text so as to represent them in target text to the best of their ability with a view to achieving stylistically functional equivalence instead of referential correspondence with different degrees of losses of aesthetic and thematic values. Homer first established the hero and journey archetypes in 800 B.C. and authors continue to utilize them today. In literature, heroes are important and interesting characters who are role models and who teach the reader important lessons about the human condition. The mythological connection and the archetypes of the hero and journey are presented here in the context of `The Lord of the Rings` and `Harry Potter`, two incredibly popular cultural icons of literature, through which the timeless lessons of mythology are transmitted to a modern audience. ····· 10361113007

Interestingly enough, Nietzschean epistemology also offered ways to overcome this nihilistic stage in an individual`s struggle for a meaningful existence. This work is based on the analysis of two plays by Tom Murphy, Bailegangaire and The Sanctuary Lamp , against the background of Nietzschean philosophy, nihilism, and attempts to discover the parallelisms between Murphy`s characters and Nietzschean elements in their search for the essence of existence and their desire for a meaningful life. The playwright conveys an individual`s loss of purpose and the inevitable chaos in the aftermath of the death of God and, also, the methods to surmount this nihilistic condition. The study comes to the conclusion that the Nietzschean elements build a solid background for Murphy`s drama, where the dramatist draws a picture of systematicity of existence of an individual who struggles to attain meaning. ····· 10361112941
Challenging stereotypes and clichés, pointing out injustices, fighting structural, institutional, and everyday racism - not because of curiosity, or choice but as necessity for plain survival - has always been the burden of the Black subject in Germany. There has equally always been a solid correlation between political activism and the production of literature as a means of raising awareness and empowerment.
Uncovering hidden chapters of activism and literature production, and understanding that there is no such thing as one Black German Community, but rather that there are and always have been different communities and individuals with different backgrounds and agendas, is key to understanding the complexity of Black German history, `community`, its activism, and its literature.
Towards this end Arriving in the Future: Stories of Home and Exile is an English-language anthology of poetry, short stories, and academic essays on Black German experience written by twenty-six Black poets, writers, and artists from across the African Diaspora living in Germany. Through their words, the following pages attempt to portray some of the history of Black communities in Germany, and the poetry and creative writing of the present which show in all their beauty the diversity of Black voices in the Germany of today.
Afro German, African, African American (including North, South, and Central America), Afro European - these terms are not mutually exclusive. Being Black in Germany, or being a Black German national is a wonderful banality that deserves recognition but requires neither charity nor exoticism. ····· 10361112560· 1 · ::::: · 9 ·· 10 ·· 11 ·· 12 ·· 13 ·· 14 ·· 15 · ::::: · 37 ·
