The validity of a bioclimatic vegetation scheme

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Vegetation maps and bioclimatic zone classifications communicate the vegetation of an area and are used to explain how the environment regulates the occurrence of plants on large scales. Climatic parameters, floristic characteristics, or edaphic features have been relied upon as decisive factors for developing such schemes. It has been deduced that plants moved between corresponding bioclimatic areas should thrive in the target location, whereas plants moved from a different zone should languish. This notion is routinely applied in forestry and horticulture but actual tests of the validity of bioclimatic maps are scanty. Here the Finnish bioclimatic vegetation zone system is tested. Relying on the plant collection of the Botanic Garden of the University of Helsinki, which is situated at the northern limit of the hemiboreal zone, the relation between the plants provenance and survival was studied. The results gave support to the zone system, and especially its hierarchical zonation. The study also shows the importance of botanic gardens paying due attention to information management and curational practices for maintaining the scientific value of their collections. ····· 10361134311

Regeneration Ecology of Erica arborea L.

für 53.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Erica arborea is the dominant tree of the uppermost forest zone of the Simen Mountains National Park, Ethiopia. Only six other woody species are found between 3.100 m and 3.600 m elevation at the investigated sites. Many E. arborea stands of the Simen Mountains are considered endangered due to insufficient regeneration attributed to changes in land use. In this study the influence of disturbances on the stand structure, species composition, density of mature tree, saplings and seedlings, as well as on the soil seed bank were examined and the causes of seedling mortality, micro site condition, seed germination requirement and survival of E. arborea were investigated at three sites. The overall vertical distribution of the seeds in the soil was similar in all stands, with the highest densities occurring in the upper five centimetres of soil and gradually decreasing densities with increasing depth. For the successful germination of E. arborea and Hypericum revolutum charred soil showed great performance, compared to other seedbed conditions (exposed mineral soil, sand, forest floor and nursery soils). Fire has a profound positive effect on Erica regeneration. ····· 10361134266

Coastal Forest Management Systems In Kenya

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Tropical coastal forests are faced with a myriad of pressures: conversion to agriculture, logging and pressure from tourism activities. The Eastern Arc and Coastal Forests of East Africa represent an area of high species endemism, but are faced with threats which threaten the very existence of the ecosystem. This work explores forest management regimes along the southern coast of Kenya and their implications to forest conservation in the region. The study employs Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems (GIS)to assess forest cover and losses between community-managed forests and 6 government managed forests. Satellite imagery from Landsat and Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) are used. Degeneration of community-based forest management systems coupled with agricultural expansion and population explosion could lead to immense forest losses in the next two decades along the Kenyan coast. ····· 10361134106

This book is a summary of work done in 2007/2008 covering three seasons at Shimba Hills National Reserve, Kenya with an aim of investigating influence of habitat type, season and microhabitat characteristics on the diversity and distribution of land snails. The work was made necessary by the realisation that knowledge on some taxonomic groups has largely been unknown in several biodiversity rich ecosystems of Kenya. This work is therefore meant to enhance biological knowledge of land snails, which have not been scientifically studied at the reserve. Molluscs were sampled using standardized protocols, yielding 28 species, a majority of them having been recorded in the wet season. The natural forest had the highest diversities of land snails compared to other habitat types emphasising the role the forest plays in conservation of land snails. This information is relevant to conservationists, researchers and nature-lovers. ····· 10361133842

Carbon Credits and Local Communities

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Forests of the world sequester and conserve more carbon than all other terrestrial ecosystems and account for 90% of the annual carbon flux between the atmosphere and the Earth`s land surface. Two case studies from India and Bolivia have been studied to demonstrate the complexities of carbon forestry projects to generate carbon credits and for their role in the development of local communities and environment. This book seeks to understand what benefits are made available to local communities through existing carbon sequestration schemes under carbon markets and what incentives there are for executors to involve local people as beneficiaries or partners. It also discusses the potential harmful effects which such integration between rural poor and carbon market could cause. The book should be useful to practitioners and policy makers working on the role of new economic incentives to reduce Green House Gas emissions from conservation and management of forests to local forest communities. ····· 10361133706

Carbon Pool of Oak Forests in Central Himalayas, India

für 53.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Himalayas, the largest body of snow and ice outside the two poles, the north and the south, are often called the Third Pole. Having significant impact on global climate system, the Himalayas have emerged as a hot spot of climate change on earth. Natural oak forests serve as crucial carbon repositories in the mountains, especially in the mid-altitudes. In order to enhance Himalayas` role in climate change mitigation, we need to preserve and augment oak forests. Even the smallest degree of disturbance by humans records a marked decline in carbon amounts sequestered in forest biomass and soils. The book examines carbon storage of the natural and disturbed oak forests in Indian Central Himalayas. The status of carbon pool of the oak forests would serve as an indicator of the degree of climate change. Carbon storage in full capacity of the oak forest ecosystems could also serve as important strategy of climate change mitigation in the Himalayas. And this critical role of the `Third Pole` would be instrumental in putting the climate system of the world back into order. The book will be of great use for all committed to the cause of the earth and its unique ecosystems. ····· 10361133569

Environment preservation and protection belong to the greatest challenges the world has set for the next decade. The consequence is an increasing number of environmental protection organizations, environmental standards, legislative regulations and limitations forcing companies into production that impacts the environment as little as possible. Environment contains both toxic and non-toxic atoms, ions and molecules. Industries are the major sources of toxic ions and its entry to biological systems disturb the biochemical pathways, in some cases leads to death of the organism. Occupational health is concerned with the two-way relationship between work and health. Factors That Affect Water Qualities

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
The term water quality is applied universally to refer to the water that meets the universal standards set for legitimate and vital water use at any scale i.e. local, regional and international levels. The evolution of the term water quality has been due to the expansion of water requirements and ability to measure and interpret water characteristics. The definition of water quality depends on the factors that determine it, and other variables that affect the nature of the water resource. Pollution and degradation of water quality interferes with legitimate and vital water use at any scale i.e. local, regional and international levels. Water quality criteria, standards and the related legislation are used as the main administrative means to manage water quality in order to achieve user requirements. The most common national requirements for drinking water of suitable quality for many countries are based on the standards of the World Health Organization (WHO, 1984, 1993.) guidelines for drinking water quality. Water quality standards for surface waters vary significantly due to different environmental conditions, ecosystems and intended human uses. ····· 10361133434

Bumble bees are significant pollinators of many plants, and are particularly attracted to mass-flowering crops such as Oilseed Rape, which they cross-pollinate. The assessment of pollinator-mediated cross-pollination events could be important when considering containment strategies of genetically modified (GM) crops, such as GM varieties of Oilseed Rape, but requires a landscape-scale understanding of pollinator movements. In this book, a simulation approach to understanding landscape-scale bumble bee movements is presented. HARVEST is a computer simulation that uses Artificial Intelligence techniques and Agent Based Modelling to predict the landscape-scale foraging patterns of Bumble Bees. The details of the model are explained, and the model is validated at the small-patch scale to demonstrate its capabilities. The model is then used to make landscape-scale predictions of the potential impact of Bumble Bees in a landscape containing both GM and non-GM crops. Potential GM containment strategies are also reviewed. ····· 10361132883
