Characterization of bones, rhinoceros horn and antler to identify species are very important to check the illegal trade throughout the world. India being one of the important biodiversity nation has yet greater task to protect their flora and fauna. In absence of a proper identification tools it is very difficult to prove offences in the court of law. Therefore, attempts were made to characterize tiger (Panthera tigris) and leopard (Panthera pardus) bones, Rhino (rhinoceros unicornis) horn and antlers of chital (Axis axis), sambar (Cervus unicolor), swamp deer (Cervus duvauceli). The present study is an effort to develop methods to characterize these items using modern techniques like: Morphometry, XRD, XRF, SEM, ICP-MS, TGA, Isotopic analysis, Protein and DNA profiles. Current thinking in plant ecology has evolved fromseparate studies of above and belowground processes. Those, however, are certainly interdependent, andeffects on one will impact the other. This bookpresents a novel approach that simultaneouslyexamines above-belowground ecosystem functions, byassessing the nitrogen contributions from roots andshoots, the seasonality of primary production, theirclimate controls, and the relationships betweenplants and key soil mesofauna like Collembola.Adjacent grassland and aspen forest differed in thequality but not in the quantity of litter produced, and most of this production comes from belowground.Grassland and forest also differed in the seasonaland spatial patterns of plant production, the effectson and responses to soil water and temperature, andthe plant relationships with Collembola. Thesedifferences between vegetation types may haveecosystem-level consequences in areas undergoingnatural forest expansion, afforestation ordeforestation. This book should be especially usefulto students and professionals of the biologicalsciences, and general people interested in theeffects of land cover changes on ecosystem functions. ····· 10361119290

Frequent droughts, past overgrazing practices, subsequent weed invasions, and increased wildfire frequency have severely degraded the natural landscapes of the Intermountain West (Northwestern United States), leading to a decrease in theabundance of native vegetation. Pseudoroegneriaspicata and Elymus wawawaiensis are two nativeperennial bunchgrasses of this region that are usedfor restoration of these landscapes. Being formerlywidespread throughout the region, P. spicata is oneof the favorite restoration species. While, E.wawawaiensis, with a restricted distribution, isoften used as a restoration surrogate for P. spicata. However, since the use of native plant material maybe more desirable than a surrogate, the use of E.wawawaiensis as a restoration plant material has beensomewhat controversial. The main goal of thisresearch was to identify plant materials and planttraits with superior seedling growth, droughttolerance, and defoliation tolerance that maycontribute to enhanced ecological function inrestored rangeland plant communities. The studies show that E. wawawaiensis has advantages as a restoration species for the Intermountain West. ····· 10361118883

Community Participation on Conservation and Protected Areas of Nepal

The world is facing problems on conservation of the natural resources,on pollution aspects, natural hazards, conflicts between people and conservations areas etc. To find out the status of conflict between national park and buffer zone people, this research was conducted on Narayani Buffer zone Village Development Committee, Nawalparasi District, Nepal. The main thrust of the study is to find socioeconomic status of the people, community forest ecology, equity in user groups, land use change and livelihood of the people. Poor socioeconomic status of people and other associated problem with crop damage, livestock depredation and human harassment causes the Park people conflict in this area. Mere compensations provided by buffer zone management is not enough and opportunities are insignificant for the local peoples. Moreover, disappearance of grass land, conversion of forest in to agriculture land reveals that the Park resources suffer from both anthropogenic and natural factors. So this book gives an idea about the park people conflict at national parks and how the national park resources are being suffering from human activities. ····· 10361118826

Stemborers are a major group of insect pests ofcereals in Africa and Asia. They aggravate foodinsecurity of farmers. Non-chemical based pestmanagement systems are advocated. Borer distributionand importance, effects of soil fertility, ofindigenous cropping systems, and of planting times onborers were studied in two ecozones, i.e., thecool-humid and semi-arid regions of the Amhara Stateof Ethiopia. Chilo partellus, Busseola fusca, Sesamiacalamistis, and a coleopterous borer, Rhynchaenusniger were found. The wasp Cotesia flavipesparasitized C. partellus. Unidentified nematodesparasitized medium sized B. fusca larvae. Increasinglevels of N fertilizer increased borer density, plantgrowth, borer damage and grain yield (up to 74%) onsorghum. Grain losses decreased linearly from 49% atno fertilizer level to 36% at the highest N level.Intercropping maize with mustard (Brassica carinataBraun) lowered B. fusca numbers. Increasing soilnutrients increased borer attack, but also improvedplant vigor, resulting in a net benefit for the plantand the grain yield. The sustainable food production is necessary to maintain food security. But the absence of adequate amount of water at the right time has made rice cultivation increasingly difficult in different parts in Nepal. The capacity of farmers to produce rice (the staple food) by adapting to the emerging changes in rainfall pattern is diminishing due to both policy to technological related factors. They have not been able to adapt to emerging changes by making changes in their way of planting rice, but try to manage with minimum amount of water barely sufficient to support transplanting to plant rice so that the rain when it occurs few weeks later can support its production. Low-income populations who have no other source of income and fully dependent on agriculture are particularly hard hit by these emerging changes. It is necessary to make strategies and policies to enable these communities to adapt to the new rainfall pattern and ensure food security. ····· 10361118131

Rapid industrialization and urbanization cause water pollution and release several genotoxic and carcinogenic compounds into the water. This is a subject of serious concern and the attention of environmentalists around the world has been increased in recent years. Several techniques have been proposed for efficient wastewater treatment, most of them presenting some limitations such as poor capacity, generate waste products, incomplete mineralization or high operating cost. Nowadays aerobic granulation treatments are considered to be the most effective route. Aerobic granulation is a process of microbial cell self-immobilization, resulting in to a cell-structured shape characterized by dense biomass. The work includes cultivation of aerobic granules based on toxic substrate (2- chlorophenol 2,4-dichlorophenol and 2,4,6- trichlorophenol) in presence or absence of any co- substrate (glucose/acetate). Various parameters such as chlorphenol removal, COD removal, MLVSS, optical density etc have been monitored. Further the pathway, kinetics and toxicity during biodegradation of toxic chlorophenols have also been studied. ····· 10361118127

Main objectives of the study were to study the forage availability and dietary overlap between Himalayan Tahr and livestock. Stratified random sampling was adopted to calculate the floristic composition of the study area. Total numbers of 45 and 55 species were found in Mongla and Phortche respectively.Since Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) National Park is one of the prime habitat of Snow Leopard and Tahrs are the major prey species of it. So the food competition between these two ungulate reflect pressure on food availability and decrease number of Tahr, which ultimately will lure snow leopards to attack livestock. This book is trying to evaluate food availability and competition between Himalayan Tahr and Livestock in the park area. ····· 10361118072
