····· 10361107873

Numerical Simulation of Tropical Cyclones using Goal-Oriented Adaptivity

für 45.80€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
In this book, we develop a goal-oriented adaptive method to improve the efficiency of tropical cyclone prediction. The term goal-oriented refers to a common desire in numerical modeling that a certain physical quantity of the solution, such as point-values, is of special interest and should be determined with high precision. In this case, discrete models can be tailored with respect to this specific request (e.g. by local grid-refinement) which allows for very efficient models. We investigate an idealized scenario of two closely located, interacting tropical cyclones. During the first hours of development, their mutual influence on the storm structure and position is strong. Since small perturbations can have strong impact on the storm positions at later times, this scenario is an excellent benchmark problem for adaptive methods. We use a discretization based on a spacetime finite element method and present a new a posteriori error estimator for the error in user-defined functionals. We introduce several functionals defined as localized integrals of vorticity and kinetic energy that are strongly correlated to the storm positions. We discuss the perturbation sensitivity of these functionals, and estimate the corresponding error of approximate solutions. Using goal-oriented adaptation of the space and time discretization, a significant efficiency improvement in storm track prediction can be achieved for this scenario. ····· 10361107551

On Quaternions, Octonions, and the Quantization of Games

····· lezzter Preis 68.00€ ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
The study of quantum games is fairly new, arising from a seminal paper of David A. Meyer. In the following decade, quantum game theory has gained a considerable interest. This book presents a mathematical formalism for quantum games generalizing the classical notion of mixing strategies. It begins with an exposition of the fundamentals of quantum information theory and proceeds to introduce games played under `quantum mediated communication`, that is, the `quantum` internet. The particular focus is on two and three player games where each player has precisely two pure strategic choices. The main result of this work is the co-ordinatization of the `quantum` payoff functions by either the quaternions or octonions in order to obtain computationally friendly versions of these functions. This computational capability is then exploited to analyze and potentially classify the Nash equilibria in the quantized games. This book is intended for students and scholars who are interested in quantum information and game theory. Although the book is sufficiently self-contained, it is assumed that the reader has already had some exposure to linear algebra and quantum information theory. ····· 10361102783

Fuzzy Lattice Neural Model and Fuzzy Equivalance Relation Model

Computer vision, unlike humans, still has not fully acquired the ability to categorise a person`s age group from an image of the person`s face. Successful gender and age classification could be used to boot the performance of face recognition system. Fuzzy models have been used and analysed in this work to achieve the desired results. The concept of fuzzy lattice neural model is introduced and is applied to classify the age group of a person from the gray scale facial image. Next, the fuzzy equivalence relation model is constructed and is used to classify the age group of a person. Then, the fuzzy lattice neural model is applied to segment an aerial gray scale image. Finally, fuzzy lattice neural model is compared with other models like fuzzy equivalence relation model, Kohenen`s clustering neural model that are used for classification. The hybridization of the technologies is demonstrated on architectures such as Neuro-fuzzy systems. This book should be of interest to researchers and technologists desirous of applying FLN technology to their respective fields of work. ····· 10361102757

Time-Delay Systems

Time-delay systems consist of delay differential equations that combine the continuous aspect of differential equations and the sample features of difference equations. These equations have advanced and retarded, fixed or flexible delays. Their origin is imputed to Condorcet in 1767, in his astronomical three-body problem. This approach has been extensively studied in various scientific studies in Physics, Engineering, Chemistry, Biology. Early, the interest for such a modeling approach also appears in Economics. In the 1930`s, Kalecki presented a delay business cycle model and Tinbergen proposed a delay system for the shipbuilding sector. This book introduces to the main concepts and methods for the time-delay systems with application to economics. A variety of advanced resolution methods is presented together with numerical examples: forward integration by steps, Lambert W function, mathematical transforms and circuit analysis. Economic models with delay from the standard economic theory are studied: decision model, business cycle and growth models. The computations have been carried out by using the softwares MATHEMATICA 7 and MATLAB 2008, and their specialized packages. ····· 10361102501

This book presents some models for spatially-structured predator-prey populations. It addresses the issues of spatial structure and predator-prey interactions, and studies optimal harvesting for the populations. These issues are very important in the development of prudent management for the exploitations of natural resources. The book explores two common features of biological populations simultaneously: biological interactions and spatial structure. It includes relevant features that occur in most commercial marine populations, that is, predator-prey interactions, and takes into account the existence of the exchange of individuals between subpopulations, which is a common phenomenon in nature. The existence of this phenomenon is studied via metapopulation approach. Some mathematical models of commercially exploited populations are then developed and the question of how to harvest a predator-prey metapopulation is addressed. Optimal harvesting strategies are found using dynamic programming and Lagrange multipliers. Rules about harvesting source/sink subpopulations, more/less vulnerable prey subpopulations and more/less efficient predator subpopulations are explored. ····· 10361102490

TRANSFORMATION GEOMETRY

The first chapter deals with the transformations (more precisely translation, reflection, rotation, dilation) in a plane while similar transformations in a 3-dimensional Euclidean space are dealt with in the second chapter. Non-linear, affine and locally affine transformations and rigid motions are included. Isometries are introduced in the third chapter. Chapter 4 offers a detailed account of product transformations which form an algebraic group. Infinitesimal transformations are introduced in Chapter 5. Cases when they may form a motion (preserving distances), translation (displacing each point through a fixed distance), conformal motion (preserving the angle between two directions), homothetic motion (a special case of conformal motion) and geodesic preserving transformations (called projective motions) are dealt therein. The last chapter defines a projective space in general and projective transformations: both singular and non-singular are studied. The chapter concludes with the projective transformations of a projective space onto itself, called collineations. Certain properties of collineations are studied. ····· 10361102480

BASIC MATHEMATICS AT A GLANCE

The book presents an introduction to mathematics starting right from the natural numbers. Covering a vast range of topics in Arithmetic, Algebra, Trigonometry, Coordinate Geometry, Theory of Equations, Sets, Matrices and Determinants, Solid Geometry, Calculus (both Differential and Integral), Analysis the book concludes with a chapter on Complex Numbers. Altogether, it has eleven chapters. Generally, the proofs are avoided but many results especially in Algebra, Trigonometry, Coordinate Geometry and Complex Numbers have been established. Fundamental theorems of Arithmetic, Algebra and Calculus are also given. The book is not intended to be a comprehensive text rather it offers a crash course of basic mathematics to the beginners and as a reference book to the advanced learners. Infinity ( ) is generally mistaken as a number or the logarithm of a negative number is just undefined concept at least to the beginners. These misconceptions are removed here. Almost all the authors claim r2 as the area of a circle of radius r (which, indeed, is zero) for circle having length (i.e. its circumference 2 r) only and is supposed to be of width zero. None takes pains to call r2 as the area of a circular (plane) region of radius r. ····· 10361102357

Regions of Variability for Subclasses of Univalent Functions

The subject of univalent functions is an important area within the venerable field of complex analysis. In this subject one often considers subclasses of the class of all analytic and univalent functions defined on the unit disk in the complex plane that are normalized. A more challenging problem is to determine a region of variability for a given subclass. Region of variability problems typically give more exact information about a family of univalent functions than classical growth distortion and rotation theorems. This book deals with a number of region of variability problems defined on several subclasses of univalent functions. The region of variability and subclasses considered in this book are of current interest of other researchers. The growth estimate and the sharp Bloch semi-norm and the pre-Schwarzian norm are obtained in many cases. In addition, the pictorial illustrations concerning the region of variability using Mathematica make the reading of this book an enjoyable one. Some of the investigations presented in the book could lead to new results in different area of research in function theory. ····· 10361102329

Numerical Treatment of Boundary Value Problems Using Spline functions

Nonpolynomial Spline Methods (NPSMs) are presented for solving single and system of boundary value problems (BVPs) of orders two, four, six and an 2mth order BVPs respectively. Also, the numerical solution of singular second order BVPs is considered. Optimal order approximations to the solutions of these boundary value problems are obtained. The matrix properties of these BVPs, arising from the discretization of systems of BVPs by NPSMs, are discussed. Sufficient conditions for the optimal convergence for NPSMs are obtained. Also, NPSMs generalize other recent finite difference methods and polynomial spline methods through arbitrary choices of some defined parameters in these methods. Numerical results demonstrated by the NPSMs are shown to produce smaller approximation errors and the superiority of our methods over other recent methods such as finite difference methods, polynomial spline methods and spline collocation methods. These new proposed methods are very encouraging in dealing with boundary value problems. ····· 10361102325

The Laplacian matrix of a graph and its eigenvalues can be used in several areas of mathematical research and have a physical interpretation in various physical and chemical theories. The related matrix, the adjacency matrix of a graph and its eigenvalues were much more investigated in the past than the Laplacian matrix. However in my opinion the Laplacian spectrum is much more natural and more important than the adjacency matrix spectrum. We have used the standard terminology of graph theory, as it is introduced in most text books on the theory of graphs. We have studied the graph structure related to the second smallest and the largest Laplacian eigenvalues. ····· 10361102278

The Scale of a Quasi-uniform Space

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
We continue our investigations of the scale of a quasi-uniform space, which we had started in an earlier article. We distinguish between the left-sided scale and the two-sided scale of a quasi-uniform space. While the behavior of the two-sided scale of a quasi-uniform space X shows similarities with the usual hyperspace of X equipped with its Hausdorff quasi-uniformity, the left-handed scale generalizes the quasi-uniform multifunction space of X into itself. For instance the two-sided scale of any totally bounded quasi-uniform space X is totally bounded, while total boundedness of the left-sided scale of a quasi-uniform space X implies that X is finite or indiscrete. Either construction of the scale is based on the idea of the prefilter space of a quasi-uniform space. Prefilter spaces of quasi-uniform spaces are shown to be bicomplete. It follows that both the left-sided and the two-sided scale of a quasi-uniform space are bicomplete. Indeed these scales can be used to construct the bicompletion of the T0-reflection of the Hausdorff quasi-uniformity of a quasi-uniform space. ····· 10361102229

Generalisations of the Contraction Mapping Theorem

Various (putative) generalisations of the Contraction Mapping Theorem in metric space theory in the literature are considered. In particular, generalisations due to Kannan and Suzuki are studied, as is a result of Merryfield, Rothschild and Stein with interesting links to Ramsey theory. The main subsequent business is a question of Stein about when there is a finite family of maps of the metric space, at least one of which contracts any particular pair of points: does some composition of members of the family have to have a unique fixed point The answer is shown to be `yes` in the special case of two commuting continuous maps of the metric space, but to be `no` in general, by the counterexample of Austin based on combinatorics on words. Thus in complete generality the Generalised Banach Contraction Conjecture is proven false. Relevant background on metric spaces is also developed. ····· 10361102147

A Qualitative Analysis of the Similarity Boundary Layer Equations

für 53.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
This book is concerned primarily with an especially simple class of exact solutions of the boundary layer equations. Similar flows exist only in certain flows in which the velocity and enthalpy profiles at different positions on the body have a similar shape. The similarity technique essentially consists of converting the partial differential equations to ordinary differential equations. The reduction of the system to a set of ordinary differential equations can be achieved by transforming the dependent and independent variables to suitable non-dimensional dependent and independent variables called the similarity variables with the aid of transformations known as similarity transformations. Qualitative properties of solutions of differential equations assume importance in the absence of closed form solutions. In case the solutions are not expressible in terms of usual known functions, an analysis of the equations is necessary to find the facets of the solutions. ····· 10361102013

LAPLACE TRANSFORMS, DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS AND FOURIER SERIES

The necessity of writing this book arose when I had to teach this course to Mechanical Engineering III year students of the PNG University of Technology, Lae. Since no consistent literature on the subject was available here, I was advised to write a text to cover the syllabus. This need, I realized earlier too, when I was Vice-Chancellor, Avadh University, Faizabad (India) in 1991 and I had to assist my daughter to learn Laplace Transforms. I looked for a suitable text but one was not available. The present book comprises seven chapters of which the first one gives a brief discussion of the essential tools for solving Ordinary Differential Equations. The next three chapters describe in detail the techniques of Laplace Transforms, Inverse Laplace Transforms and their Applications to solving Differential Equations. Fourier series have been discussed in the fifth chapter, while a short discussion of Partial Differential Equations is given in the sixth chapter PDE`s of interest to Engineering students have been included. The last chapter offers a detailed discussion of Convergence of Infinite Series and Infinite Products. ····· 10361102002

The present book, having twelve chapters, offers a first course on classical mechanics suitable for graduate and college students. It comprises of three segments: vectors, statics and dynamics of a particle. It begins with an introduction to vectors and deals with their dot` and cross` products in the first chapter. The next four chapters deal with statics: resultant of forces, moment of a force, forces in equilibrium and centre of gravity are discussed. Different types of forces: weight, normal reaction, friction, tension in string (both elastics and inelastic) and thrust in a light rod are considered. The last segment deals with dynamics of a particle. Motion of a particle in a straight line and in a plane, simple harmonic motion, and projectile are explained in the Chapters 6 9. Work done by a force, its rate of working (power) and the capacity of an engine to do work (energy) are included in the Chapter 10. The concepts of momentum and impact of a particle are explained in the 11th chapter whereas the relative motion is discussed in the last chapter. Chapters are divided into Sections, which are numbered chapter-wise. ····· 10361101980

Dynamical properties and synchronization of chaotic and hyperchaotic systems involving real variables have been studied and investigated in applied sciences over the last 30 years. There is, however, a wide variety of the physical problems which, from mathematical point of view, can be studied more conveniently by using complex variables. The dynamics of these systems is rich and complex. The aim of this monograph is to introduce and analyze some chaotic and hyperchaotic complex nonlinear systems. The basic dynamical properties of these systems are presented. The control problem of hyperchaotic attractors of these systems is also stated. Several types of synchronization of chaotic and hyperchaotic complex nonlinear dynamical systems are investigated in this monograph. There are interesting cases of dynamical systems, where the main variables participating in the dynamics are complex, for example, when amplitudes of electromagnetic fields of laser systems are involved. Another example is when chaos synchronization is used for communications, where doubling the number of variables may be used to increase the content and security of the transmitted information. In this paper a regularized spectral estimation formula and a regularized iterative algorithm for band-limited extrapolation are presented. The ill-posedness of the problem is taken into account. First a Fredholm equation is regularized. Then it is transformed to a differential equation in the case where the time interval is {bf R}. A fast algorithm to solve the differential equation by the finite differences is given and a regularized spectral estimation formula is obtained. Then a regularized iterative extrapolation algorithm is introduced and compared with the Papoulis and Gerchberg algorithm. A time-frequency regularized extrapolation algorithm is presented in the two-dimensional case. The Gibbs phenomenon is analyzed. Then the time-frequency regularized extrapolation algorithm is applied to image restoration and compared with other algorithms. ····· 10361101835
