It was predicted that, when the dissociative tendencies of an individual is high, his/her PTSD symptom severity will also be high, regardless of his/her severity of exposure. The sample for the study was drown from 1999 Izmit Earthquake survivors. The scales used were Dissociative Experiences Scale and Posttraumatic Stress Diagnostic Scale. In addition to these questionnaires, a severity of exposure scale was developed. The hypothesis was not confirmed by the findings. The results showed that, contrary to what was predicted, when the dissociation level is high, exposure severity played an important role in the symptom severity level of the participants. Accordingly, it was concluded that, there is a relationship between dissociative tendencies and PTSD, however, when studied together, the impact of the severity of exposure on the development of posttraumatic stress disorder is stronger than the dissociative tendencies . ····· 10361133996

Micheline Kaigongi elucidates that in many Kenyan hospitals, infected patients are treated for TB but little attention is directed to their psychological state, mainly their likely depressed state. The design and function of the study was to identify potential treatment and prevention targets, as well as explore risk factors associated with various forms of delinquent behavior. The premise behind the four hypotheses of the study is that delinquent behavior is as much a product of poor coping and social learning, as it is a manifestation of deviant, antisocial characteristics. Criminal behavior, although certainly not always, can be described as a symptom of specific psychological deficits and environmental factors blended together. Therefore, delinquency is a treatable condition from an individual perspective as well as a preventable condition from a social perspective. ····· 10361133184

By the 1990s a serious gap was also noted in research on the cognitive performance of learners presumed to be operating at the Piagetian formal operations stage of cognitive development. This book endeavours to provide an insight into the influence of four home environmental variables namely family size, parental schooling, home language and socio-economic status. Each predictor is examined, basing on children`s responses to modified Piagetian formal operations task. It unveils the events and activities in African urban homes covering how these affect cognition during learning. Both educators and parents/caregivers need to work collaboratively to minimise or eradicate obstacles that may militate against effective cognitive achievement of children. This book is a clever and successful integration of three approaches relating parenting: (1) cognitive-behavioral therapy (2) parental programs and (3) clinical cognitive science. Although all three lines of research deal with parenting, often they remained fragmented and thus they do not contribute to a comprehensive development of the field (be it in terms of theory and/or practice). This book rigorously proposes a common architecture, which nicely facilitate the integration of the findings of these three research paradigms. Thus, this book is a very useful guide for research and practitioners in the parenting field, with larger implications for research, theory, and practice in the field of psychotherapy. - Daniel David, Ph.D., Aaron T. Bereavement is an interesting and pivotal aspect of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Unfortunately it is one that has been overlooked if not often neglected with regard to management and treatment of bereaved HIV positive individuals. People die on a daily basis from AIDS and with that comes the grieving and mourning of loved ones, family and friends. If every AIDS victim left behind four grieving individuals, with a population of 5,24 million infected people, we would have 20.96 million grieving individuals. That would be 41.93% of the South African population. In light of this, research on Bereavement and HIV/AIDS has been long overdue. Studies on Bereavement and HIV/AIDS would provide us with important information in not only designing relevant HIV interventions but also in managing the frail and preoccupied minds of those that have lost a loved one to the disease, and by so doing reducing the risk of them either transmitting the disease or becoming infected themselves ····· 10361133099

The majority of investigations conducted on coping mechanisms have focused on policemen, soldiers, and health care. Only recently has attention towards workplace adversity in humanitarian aid workers become the focus of attention. While some aid workers leave their organisations because of issues associated with workplace adversity many are likely to remain. This raises the issue of why some people are able to thrive despite challenging career choices, while others do not. In this book three protective categories applicable to populations at risk for stress are identified as responsible for the development of resilience: individual characteristics, social support, and cognitive features. A model is developed theorising that positive or negative change in resilience is governed by the relations among protective factors within the individual and the environment. This theoretical framework contributes to the understanding of how resilience develops in field-based humanitarian aid workers allowing them to survive and thrive within extremely challenging environments. ····· 10361132943
