The purpose of this grounded theory study was to examine the process by which people with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI) access information on the web. In 2007, the Centers for Disease Control estimated 3.8 million new MTBIs annually in the U.S. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 for accessible web development offer few that support the needs of users with cognitive disability, including MTBI and stroke. As WCAG progresses to 2.0 and beyond, this may change. In this study, nine MTBI survivors were interviewed and observed as they visited websites. Both the Glaser and Strauss and Strauss and Corbin models guided data analysis. The role of the user s emotions, such as frustration or pleasure, to create a pleasing or dissatisfying experience, was a common theme from both models. The final visual matrix illustrates three stages during which the user accesses and processes information. User emotions and other elements inform success, or lack thereof, of the user choosing to remain on a page, move forward to a new page, or exit the site altogether. Implications are great for online education, industry, social networking, and other entities of interest to MTBI survivor. ····· 10361135953

Communication Strategies used by Turkic Learners of English

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
The aim of this study was to examine whether the use of communication strategies can be explained by the native language background of the learner. To be more specific, an attempt was made to find out which communication strategies learners with Turkic languages background use in communicating in English as a foreign language. There were three groups of participants from Eastern Mediterranean University, English Preparatory School (EMUEPS), North Cyprus: Azeri learners of English, Turkish learners of English from Turkey, and Turkish learners of English from Cyprus. Our rationale for this quest can be explained by some considerations. First of all, although there have been attempts to investigate the issue of communications from comparative perspective, it is the first time, as far as we know, an attempt has been made to involve three idioms simultaneously. Moreover, it is the first time that three genealogically related idioms (Turkic) are involved. Finally, even though all the learners belong to the same proto-language, their contexts of previous experience of learning English and cultural surroundings are different. ····· 10361134377

This thesis describes an action research project undertaken at Manchester Community College, Manchester, Connecticut, USA. The project was designed to gather evidence to address the research question: Can an intercultural approach to composition provide community college students with the cultural awareness and skills to succeed in the culture of the academy without devaluing the home cultures from which the students come to the college The project involved asking English 101 (freshmen composition) students to read James Joyce s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and then to apply intercultural skills to their analysis and interpretation of the text. About 80 students participated in the project over a two-year period. The thesis includes an overview of composition theory, with emphasis on current trends in postmodern/postcolonial approaches that emphasize a binary (self/Other) world view. It also provides an overview of intercultural theory and an examination of the ways in which it reflects or differs from bicultural theory and from current trends in composition. It also contains descriptions of intercultural activities undertaken in my classroom. ····· 10361134245

Schools play a major role in shaping the attitudes, opinions and behaviour of young people and so are ideal environments for teaching the social, as well as biologicalaspects of HIV and AIDS. However, literature indicates that learners are displaying AIDS fatigue and may be resistant to teaching around HIV and AIDS. In order to enhance learner engagement and learning, there is therefore a need for teachers to employ interactive teaching and learning strategies that are interactive, inexpensive and fun. This dissertation outlines the research design of an investigation into how such strategies can be used in HIV and AIDS prevention education. An action research design was made use of in this study and the manner in which several teachers presented HIV and AIDS education to his/her learners was initially observed. Community Literacies and Adult Literacy Education

This was a study of rural community literacy practices in Uganda. I used the social practices theory of literacy as a theoretical framework to investigate literacy use in rural community life in Bweyale. The social practices theory of literacy sees literacy as variable social practice that can only be understood within the social context of its use. Consistent with the social practices theoretical perspective and following similar research traditions in this area of literacy study, I used ethnographic research methods to collect data and grounded theory methods to analyse data on literacy use in Bweyale. The study revealed that rural people, contrary to popular perceptions about their illiteracy and hence lack of literacy, actually use reading and writing in a variety of ways in different domains of literacy use. Literacy pervades most aspects of rural community life, making rural people use literacy in many rich and creative ways. Most people, regardless of their literacy status, participate in local literacy practices. The most prominent areas of literacy use in rural community life are livelihood activities, education, religion, bureaucracy, household life, and personal life. ····· 10361133562

The principal aim of this thesis was to examine the extent to which current methods of teaching in undergraduate design courses leaves the students with an awareness of the potential of the writing process in their practice. The context and position are reflected upon, and the potential of the process of writing in contemporary undergraduate design education in the UK is explored with special reference to the 3D Design course at Manchester Metropolitan University. Rather than focusing on the written outcomes that are produced, writing is explored as a process that could be considered a design process, an activity that goes through cycles of planning, acting, observing and reflecting (modelled on the action research spiral). ····· 10361133401

Educators will find this work very helpful as they endeavor to deliver to such segments of the learning public. The study of religious social movements is of particular concern as the fundamentalist worldview has increasingly insinuated itself into all areas of society and its institutions, and has influenced individual and collective expectations for women. This qualitative study examines how women learn the culture of a highly authoritarian, patriarchal church. It describes the process by which women are integrated into the church and how their identities are affected through membership. A desire to have a relationship with God opened each woman to initial contact by a church member who facilitated the acceptance of the Bible as an authority, commitment to the church, and exclusive participation in church activities. The women changed in response to what they learned about being a disciple of the church and a woman in the church. Desire and authority defined the boundaries of their learning. Deliberate participation in core activities anchored each in the group identity. Identities were constructed through social interaction, in response to social isolation and from others moderating access to power however, the practice of the theology of submission created identity conflict. ····· 10361131973
