Ultimately, future generations of electronics may store information in the spins of single confined electrons and holes. Quantum dots provide an ideal material for locally confining these single charges. To control interactions between spins in separate quantum dots, the dots will need to be located close to one another and the coupling between the dots must be turned on and off in situ. Vertically stacked quantum dots provide an ideal test bed for studying these interactions because molecular beam epitaxy techniques allow for precise control over the dimensions and spatial proximity of the dots. Ultimately, however, it will be impossible to access individual QDs in a vertically stacked column. Laterally ordered dots will enable the deposition of electrical gates that can individually control each dot and the coupling between them. In this book we are looking at the fundamental mechanisms of coupling between laterally ordered dots and how the coupling depends on material structure. ····· 10361114853

Continuous Variable systems are those described by canonical conjugated coordinates x and p endowed with infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces, thus involving a complex mathematical structure. A special class of CV states, are the so-called Gaussian states. With them, it has been possible to implement certain quantum tasks as quantum teleportation, quantum cryptography and quantum computation with fantastic experimental success. The importance of Gaussian states is two- fold firstly, its structural mathematical description makes them much more amenable than any other CV system. Secondly, its production, manipulation and detection with current optical technology can be done with a very high degree of accuracy and control. Nevertheless, it is known that in spite of their exceptional role within the space of all Continuous Variable states, in fact, Gaussian states are not always the best candidates to perform quantum information tasks. Thus non-Gaussian states emerge as potentially good candidates for communication and computation purposes. ····· 10361114789

Hence, this book is aimed at presenting the possible applications of plasma as a medium for negative/positive refraction of electromagnetic waves. In the reference of composite metamaterials, this book brings models to achieve negative refraction using plasma. In another approach, study is conducted on hybrid plasma photonic crystal, which reveals that positive and negative refraction can be achieved by switching ON and OFF the plasma. The use of computer simulation becomes especially important in the study of hyperfine interactions within atoms and ions where there are many levels to be managed. The study of hyperfine splitting is of special importance in Astrophysics and Stellar Spectroscopy. Consequently, the classification of hyperfine structures with atomic and ionic energy levels is of crucial importance. The motivation for this work was the ongoing research in hyperfine spectroscopy at University of Karachi. The aim of the simulation was to help the researchers model hyperfine splittings under different parameters and their classification. An automorphic form, constructed as a non-holomorphic Eisenstein series, is known to encode all perturbative and non-perturbative quantum corrections in the genus expansion for the R^4-term included in the asymptotic string expansion for the effective action. Furthermore, we study Type IIA superstring theory compactified on a rigid Calabi-Yau threefold. Here a discrete group, the Picard modular group, is believed to be a preserved symmetry of the quantum theory, and an automorphic form is conjectured to encode the quantum corrections to the metric of the hypermultiplet moduli space, which classically is a coset space. To read off the loop corrections arising from the string coupling, as well as the non- perturbative instanton corrections, we rewrite the Eisenstein series as a Fourier series. The Fourier series is decomposed into a constant, abelian and non-abelian part. The main complication arises when trying to identify the coefficients in the non- abelian part. We try to bring some clarity to this issue. ····· 10361114546

Effective in this context means that the system would be lightweight, economical, and readily installed with current site practice. The accepted wisdom in the area of sound reduction is to drape the entire area of the partition with a sound absorbing membrane material and the work of this book proceeded on this premise. However during the course of the experiments it was found that the assembly detail at the stud had a much more significant effect than the membrane material on sound reduction. It transpired that the main effect of the membrane material was to provide damping under the screws at the stud and if the material was compressed too much the damping was compromised. The book reports on the introduction of a new sacrificial layer which, when incorporated into the stud assembly allows the full damping effect of the membrane material to manifest itself. The book therefore proposes a strip or wad consisting of layers of membrane material and sacrificial layer to be mounted on the stud prior to the plasterboard. ····· 10361114253

Due to their dual nature anisotropic physical properties of solids and rheological properties and easy response to external perturbations (electric field, magnetic field etc.), liquid crystals are of greatest potential of scientific and technological applications. The subject of liquid crystal, in its experimental aspect, has come of age and has achieved the status of being a very exciting interdisciplinary field of scientific and industrial research. Patch antennas are used because of their popularity arising from their adaptability and unobtrusive nature. Here we have tried to look at an optimum design for a patch antenna and also the best possible feed network for the same which would enhance its radiation properties as has been shown through the results obtained here. Furthermore, the mutual coupling between antennae in a 2 x 2 array when the antennae are linearly, non-linearly and circularly polarized is studied and compared. In the first part, we investigate the superconducting proximity effect in a clean magnetic structure consisting of two ferromagnetic layered domains with antiparallel magnetizations in contact with a superconductor. Within the quasiclassical Green`s function approach we find that the penetration of the superconducting correlations into the magnetic domains can be enhanced as compared to the corresponding single domain structure. This enhancement depends on an effective exchange field which is determined by the thicknesses and exchange fields of the two domains. In the second part, we study the superconducting proximity effect in a clean nonmagnetic metal in contact with a ferromagnetic superconductor which has a nonunitary f-wave triplet order parameter. Using the quasiclassical Green`s function approach, we solve the Eilenberger equation analytically in a non-self-consistent form. The density of states is obtained in the bulk of the ferromagnetic superconductor and it is plotted versus the energy.
