Reactions were carried out on Schiff bases derived from condensation of 2-hydroxynaphthaldehyde or salicylaldehyde with 2-aminophenol and 8-aminoquinoline. The Schiff bases were reacted with Ni(II) and Cu(II) metal ions in presence of diamines as 2,2`-dipyridyl or 1,10-phenathroline or S-donor anion as thiophenolate. The used Schiff bases were N-salicylidene-8-aminoquinoline (HQS), N-2-hydroxynaphthalidene-8-aminoquinoline (HQN), N-2-hydroxynaphthalidene-2-aminophenol (H2PN) and N-salicylidene-2-aminophenol (H2PS). The complexes were found to have the general formulas [M(SB)(N-N)] , [M(SB)(N-N)AcO].XH2O and [M(QN)(SPh)], where M is Cu(II) or Ni(II), SB is the Schiff base and N-N is 2,2-`dipyridyl or 1,10-phenathroline. All complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, electrical conductivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements. ····· 1036189323

Activated carbon proved to be the most effective adsorbent for various pollutants in water including fluoride. But Commercial activated carbon is an expensive one. So activated carbons prepared from bio-waste materials, viz., Phaseolus trilobus, Leucena leucocephala and Casuarina and were collectively named as Kaza s carbons. The suface analysis of these carbons is carried out by FT-IR, XRD, SEM and EDAX along with physico-chemical analysis. These carbons are having good surface characteristics and are applied in defluridation of synthetic fluoride solution as well as for real water samples. The adsorption data is modeled with Freundilich, Langmuir, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms. Five kinetic models, viz., pseudo first-order, pseudo second-order, Weber and Morris intraparticle diffusion model, Bangham s pore diffusion model and Elovich equations are used to study the Adsorption process. The composition of fatty acids in selected tissues of two populations of cod and three redfish species was determined by the fatty acid profile method: a chemometric method, consisting of methanolysis, gas chromatography of the resulting fatty acid methyl esters and multivariate statistical treatment of the analytical data. The two reared stocks of cod from the Faroe Bank and the Faroe Plateau had significantly different fatty acid profiles in total lipids and in phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylcholine from heart tissue. This difference is expected to be genetic and free of biotic and abiotic impacts on the fatty acid profiles. The three species of redfish from waters off the Faroe Islands and Norway had significantly different fatty acid profiles in selected tissues. The fatty acid profiles appear to be species specific. The mutual relationship between Sebastes marinus and S. mentella is closer than the relationship between either of them and S. viviparus. Analysis of the fatty acid profile in the heart tissue of S. mentella from eleven locations has revealed a stock-structure, comprising four separate stocks of Sebastes mentella in the North Atlantic. ····· 1036188437

Moreover, full structural elucidation of all the obtained compounds is provided and largely discussed. A general introduction provides the background knowledge to this work. A series of hybrid mesoporous materials were synthesised through the functionalisation of pre-formed porous zirconium titanium oxide phases using a range of commercially available phosphonic acids. A fundamental study on the hydrolytic stability and chemical durability of these materials in aqueous acidic conditions were conducted. Polyphosphonic acids have been recognised as the most stable surface species. With potential use of these materials for the nuclear industry in view, a study of the irradiation stability of the un-functionalised zirconium titanium oxides were conducted. Changes to the structural morphology were found from physical characterisation techniques evidencing the overall decrease in surface area, pore volume and mass density with increased doses. A similar irradiation study was also carried out for functionalised zirconium titanium oxides. Structural characterisation revealed a drop in surface area, pore diameter and pore volume, along with a rise in mass density after exposure to high levels of radiation. A loss of functionalised phosphonate molecules was also observed by thermal analysis under the same conditions. ····· 1036188016

Thirteen brands of bottled drinking waters consisting of both purified and mineral types were collected from different area in Kuala Lumpur and evaluated for their fitting for human consumption. The water quality constituents analyzed include alkalinity, chloride, conductivity, fluoride, total hardness, Al, Cd, Co, Cu, Mn, Pb, Zn, nitrate, pH, phosphorus, sulphate, total dissolved solids and turbidity. The results acquired were compared with WHO s Guideline for Drinking Water Quality. The discoveries made by this study also shown that most commercial bottled mineral waters in Malaysia had not meet WHO`s Guideline for Drinking Water Quality, although they were stated otherwise. This study investigated Cu(II) based anti-inflammatory agents for inflammation alleviation due to Rheumatoid Arthritis. Four copper chelating agents [555-N], [H(555)-N], [H2(5555)-N] and [H2(556)-N] were synthesized and used for in vitro investigations to determine their formation constants with Cu(II), Zn(II), Ca(II) and Ni(II). The stability for the Cu(II) solution species were [555-N] [H(555)-N] [H2(556)-N] [H2(5555)-N] with significant Jahn-Teller distortion for the MLH-1 and MLH-2 species. Percutaneous skin absorption estimates for Cu(II) complexes indicated encouraging trans-dermal absorption, though were poor in mimicking the Cu-Zn-SOD enzyme. Speciation modelling of Cu(II) suggested significant mobilization of Cu(II) by [555-N] and [H(555)-N] in vivo with insignificant interference from Zn(II) and Ca(II). The in vivo verification of the modelling results through animal experiments showed significant biological half life of the Cu(II) complexes. Overall, in vitro and in vivo evaluations showed potential of achieving exogenous trans-dermal administration, subsequent endogenous mobilization and retention of therapeutic effect of Cu(II) at sites of inflammation. ····· 1036187511
