Cooking in India

····· lezzter Preis 49.00€ ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
The rural kitchens in India are generally full of smoke due to the use of inefficient traditional chulahs (cookstoves) and burning of unprocessed cooking fuels such as firewood, cowdung and crop residues which ultimately causes Indoor air pollution (IAP). This causes severe health problems especially to women and children who are exposed to pollutants for several hours a day while cooking. Among the indoor air pollutants Carbon monoxide (CO) was estimated using Gas Watch before and after installing an improved chulah in selected households. An intervention programme was also conducted for selected homemakers to create awareness on IAP, health of the homemakers and importance of using improved chulah to reduce IAP. The amount of CO emitted by the improved chulah was much lesser than the CO emitted by traditional chulahs. This book, therefore, throws light on the benefits of improved chulahs. If household members are in better health, there is a potential for the household to be more productive, with household adults missing fewer days of work and children missing fewer days of school. This book is useful for students, researchers and people in general as a whole. ····· 10361101795

Botswana`s economy has long been mineral-driven, in particular, diamonds and the mining industry contributed 41.4 per cent share of GDP in 2005/06. However, with the expected leveling off of diamond extraction, there is need to diversify the economy. This book will show that tourism as a major potential sector in the economy, contributing 4.5 per cent share to GDP, can bring about shared economic growth and thus hasten the diversification of the economy. Nonetheless, tourism in Botswana is wildlife based but there is regular conflict of wildlife with the local communities. This implies that wildlife needs to be conserved and this book will show that past programs linking wildlife benefits and the local communities such as CBRNM have failed (Pagiola, 2006) to reach their conservation and long-term sustainable development goals. Consequently, mechanisms such as PES have to be instituted to circumvent the threats to wildlife as a source of benefits to the country. Two non-market valuation methods contingent valuation and travel cost are used. The study revealed that there is a potential to establish a PES market in Botswana. ····· 10361101728

Access, Use and Management of Water Resources by Rural Communities

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Water has been viewed as the most valuable of Zimbabwe`s natural resources. The development of Zimbabwe and its capacity to support an increasing population are strictly limited by water availability and the extent to which water can be exploited and controlled. Using a case study of Chishawasha Settlement Area, this book examines access, use and management of water resources in Zimbabwe within the context of Church Administration. The study further explores strategies used to gain access and levels at which conflict arises in accessing and utilizing water resources. Management of water resources is also investigated with the role played by women and the Church being central. A comparative analysis of the quasi-private and communal tenure system highlights that the concept of tenure in Chishawasha is problematic and influences access and management of water, also leading to conflicts. Also of importance is allocation and development of water resources. Women are at the center of Water Resources Management as they dominate structures relating to water management and are also key to the collection of water. ····· 10361101718

Living on the edge of war

The war is like a beggar`s wound, it never heals. However some beggars are fond of their wounds as they provide their livelihood, so much so that they even fake wounds. (Gamburd, 2004) This study investigates the livelihood strategies of displaced people who live in regions bordering the war zone in Sri Lanka, examining how these communities adapt and use available resources in their livelihoods strategies. Displacement and livelihoods are studied in the context of host and guest relations, but also resettlement in previous communities and relocation in new regions. This research problem is analysed through the Rural Livelihoods Framework. The framework attempts to understand the relationships amongst social actors by examining their access to assets, influenced by institutional elements that result in livelihood strategies. Critiques note that there is a need to also focus on structural elements and the existence of power relations that also affect access to resources. ····· 10361101614

The book examines the role of community based organizations in promoting household livelihood in selected communities of Osun State, Nigeria. Many poverty reduction programmes in the country have not translated into well-being for majority of the poor in urban slums and rural areas. Hence, most people rely on non-state organizations to render assistance for households and communities in poverty conditions. The study showed that organizational life in the selected communities radiate around non formal cultural groups, religious groups, and mutual aid groups who provide financial assistance to members, ensure community integration and provide spiritual assistance. However, the effectiveness in providing the services varied by type of CBOs. Cooperative societies assisted households to access credit and accumulate assets religious organizations provided health care services while town development unions collaborated with other CBOs to provide security. The study concludes that CBOs` activities enhance household livelihoods in the study area and provided coping mechanisms for meeting household challenges. ····· 10361101611

With diminishing finances, it is rarely possible for a library or information center to have enough resources to fulfill the needs of its clients. Libraries working under effective collaborative initiatives in developed countries have registered tremendous success compared to libraries in developing countries. There is a growing need for libraries in developing countries to redefine their resource sharing strategies so as to benefit from library collaboration that can result in a more effective means of meeting the needs of their library users. Consortium member libraries are influenced by services, products and programs that impact their library users directly, and those that are perceived to be cost effective. The innovativeness and enthusiasm of the consortium staff, and consortium history play an important role in the success of a consortium. The lack of consortium history might be an important factor in explaining why library consortia have not been successful in some developing countries. ····· 10361101460

The Legal Status and the Self-Images of Translators in Turkey

für 53.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
This study analyzes the legal status of translators in Turkey, defined in contradicting terms in the two Turkish laws and accounts for the factors determining the translators` self-images. The Turkish Law on Intellectual and Artistic Works defines the translator as the owner of the processed work`, whereas the Press Law holds the translator liable as the owner of the work` in case of a criminal case against the translated work. An analysis of certain cases in Turkey, in which translated books have been prosecuted/ banned or even confiscated, reveals that translators base their defensive pleas on the argument that they are the messengers of the source authors and thus, should not be convicted. This is indicative of a discrepancy between the image of the rewriter assigned to translators by translation scholars and translators` self-images . In this book, it is argued that translators`self- images are shaped by not only the present controversial legal status but also historical and social factors which have led translators to assume a subservient role rather than acknowledging their own power as cultural agents. ····· 10361101362

Attainment of sustainability is not an endeavor of a single day, but a life long process. This study sought to examine the major issues facing the sustainability of Community Based Projects in developing countries with reference to Kenya. The study employed survey research design. The sample was selected from four main Community-Based-Projects, which appeared to be unstable. The sample consisted of thirty six Project Steering Committee members and fifty six Community Projects Members. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The study established that the major issues facing CBPs included project management processes, local and team leadership and financing issues. This study recommends an adoption of more radical approaches in handling the theme of sustainability of CBPs: new project sustainability models built on intrinsic sense of duty attained through individual and organizational based processes. This study is therefore, expected to arouse new interest among scholars, development practitioners and students of research about re-mapping the traditionally established paths of attaining project sustainability in developing countries. ····· 10361101312

The Namibia Management Effectiveness Tracking Tool (NAMETT) which is the Namibian version of the World Bank PA assessment tool METT has been implemented in Namibia. The assessment carried out through NAMETT suggests that there is a lack of a robust management system for PAs in Namibia which will consolidate management effectiveness at planning, implementation and reporting level. Like most other developing countries, poverty remains one of the biggest problems of Uganda. To overcome the poverty problem the Government of Uganda has come up with numerous strategies. One of the strategies is the Poverty Eradication Action Plan (PEAP) which is a comprehensive poverty reduction strategy based on a number of pillars. One of its pillars aims at reducing poverty through availing micro credit and enhancing microfinance outreach. To realize this, the government of Uganda has provided policy support to Microfinance institutions (MFIs). As a result the microfinance sector has grown tremendous over the past years. The study aimed at investigating the contribution of the complementary services in micro credit outreach. SOCADIDO a non government development organization was selected as a case study. Farmer strategies towards climate variability and change

While adaptation and coping with climate variability and change have become key themes in current global climate discussions and policy initiatives, literature on coping as distinct from adaptation appears to be still limited, with literature making reference to adaptation broadly. In view of this, research was conducted in Zimbabwe and Zambia to build an understanding on farmers` perceptions of risk, analyze impacts from climatic variability and change and identify coping and adaptation strategies to climate variability and change. The qualitative approach formed the basis of the study, particularly through Participatory methods. While farmers are aware of climate change and variability and have subsequently started to employ strategies to deal with these changes, they tend to assign contribution of multiple stressors to climate change. Impacts from climate change include reduction in crop yields, socio-economic impacts, changes in availability of fresh water and health related problems. The need to capitalize on local benefits from climate change is emphasized in this book ····· 10361101157

Planning and achieving development goals in Nepal are most challenging as the political leaders here have interests of making money, appointing close relatives and using project resources in addition to perpetual acute shortage of resources with instability of governments. Systemic corruption though is the result of agent provocateurs as a local agent, consultant, friend, minister or even more surprising member of the society in or outside the country. The problem starts with an inappropriate designs based on a false feasibility studies, surveys on a photocopied project documents hardly read by concerned authorities - project management always keen on finding ways in increasing costs. Impunity is accelerated as the concerned agencies often assist political vendettas and real culprits are mostly acquitted to be promoted being fully trained on corruption. Majority population being practically illiterate, development comes for few persons, national capacity building is never given a thought resulting in practically no involvement of stakeholders` in monitoring of various aspects of projects leading to negligence in fulfilling of duties by the concerned officials. ····· 10361101127

China is experiencing a dramatically increasing process of rural-urban migration, which is almost parallel with the phenomenal economic growth and development in China in the last decades. Given the massive scale of rural-urban migration in China, the health services access and health constraints not only matter to rural-urban migrants but also have important implications for broad public health concerns. However, this issue has not been paid enough attention in academic research. While the literature focuses on describing the demographic trends and economic effects of rural-urban migration, very little in-depth research has been done on migrant health and the constrained access to health services among migrants in urban China. This study focuses on the multifaceted reality of health constraints and health services access among migrants by originally exploring the social strata, social networks, and the understanding of health and health services among migrants. Furthermore, this study investigates the health constraints and health services access of rural-urban migrants in the absence of equal social protection by the government. ····· 10361101123

Informal transport modes such as Kampala`s boda-boda motorcycle axis have become a common fixture in much of the developing world. With them has arisen a whole new set of challenges. Their role in aggravating traffic congestion, pollution, traffic accidents, conflicts and urban crime is well- documented. Readily available and accessible especially for the city`s increasingly transit-dependent population, they have become an indispensable asset. The boda- boda taxis have helped to provide jobs for the unemployed, in addition to improving access and mobility in areas devoid of service coverage by other public transport modes. Little or almost no attention is given to the fact that the number of livelihoods at stake is immense. This study was carried out in an attempt to bring to the fore this neglected aspect, in a bid to engender alternative interventions and strategies to safeguard the vulnerable livelihoods of all those entirely dependant on this mode of transport for survival. The study should provide a useful platform for various development practioners on how to approach some of the most complex issues currently facing the global-south. ····· 10361100933

Child Protection work exposed the author to problems facing ``Children Born Out side Marriage`` CBOM). They suffer specific and unique disadvantages. No single actor is addressing them as a group. At best they are part of all children considered vulnerable in the National Orphans and other Vulnerable Children policy of Uganda. Kaberamaido District of Uganda still operates along very strong customary norms and ties often conflicting with international and national laws. The study revealed that although there is much need, the problems of CBOM are not considered an issue possibly because `illegitimacy`` is not seen as a problem given the patriarchal nature of Ugandan society. Through 19 individual interviews and a village meeting, a wealth of relevant and unique information was gathered. The situation was reported as bad, characterised by discrimination and lack of basic necessities. Many children live with other care givers not their biological parents who may have their own children to look after and might take precedence. `Illegitimacy`` is not a new phenomenon and could therefore be treated as something requiring durable solutions. ····· 10361100807

Local knowledge (LK) contributed to the conservation and management of natural resources through belief systems and cultural norms that were expressed in traditions and myths. The environment was understood through a close interaction between people and their natural resources and judicious measures were taken to ensure resource sustainability. The survival of LK is being threatened by various interacting factors that do not promote its utilization and transmission. This was observed in a study done in Marange Communal Area, in Eastern Zimbabwe. The main objective was to assess the survival of socio-cultural beliefs and local knowledge about management of natural resources in a community that has been affected by HIV/AIDS as seen through changing family structures. Data was collected through questionnaire interviews, household surveys and observations of the physical environment. People s perceptions of local knowledge differ which has affected its use in conserving natural resources. Resource depletion, marketing and formal education threaten survival of LK, but its erosion is lessened by community social networks. It is important to document LK for future generations. ····· 1036199236
