Resilience to Climate Change at Taunsa Barrage, Pakistan

····· lezzter Preis 44.10€ ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Protected areas around the world are more prone to have negative effects of climatic variations that are disturbing the stabilization of ecosystems. Taunsa Barrage Wildlife Sanctuary was studied to be the reference site, where climatic change factors were recorded and resilience of rural community to these changes was analyzed. A questionnaire of participatory human resource interaction appraisal was used to assess the socio-economics of rural communities, perception of local communities about climate change and their resilience capacity. Climatic factor like temperature and rainfall were proportionally changed as the data assessed from 1951-2010 and rural communities around Taunsa Barrage Wildlife Sanctuary were also agreed to realize the phenomenon of climatic change. These communities have proved to be resilient, but at the same time they have increased the pressure on natural resource use. Thus, showing the Taunsa Barrage`s vulnerability to climate change is in accordance with the Environmental Vulnerability Index of Pakistan. ····· 1036125969

Ecopharmacology and its Future Forensic Implications

····· lezzter Preis 44.10€ ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Ecopharmacology is a science dealing with effects of active pharmaceutical compounds and their metabolites on ecosystem in negative way. Pharmaceuticals find their way into environment either through excretion after human use, agriculture and veterinary use, through disposal of expired medicine and as manufacturing waste. Some pharmaceuticals are not easily biodegradable, persist in environment and their accumulation in environment pose risk to non targeted organisms, animals and may be humans. They are usually found in traces (nanograms to micrograms/litre) in drinking water still they are known to affect aquatic life, vertebrates and invertebrates. They can travel up in food chain and can affect humans, usually indirectly. Antibiotics in sub therapeutic doses used as growth promoters in poultry have resulted in MDR strains of human pathogenic organisms. Remedial measures of pharmaceuticals to decrease their impact on environment will also be discussed. As pharmaceuticals from environmental sources are found in traces in biological fluid, death from them seems to be suspicious due to non-lethal doses, which is a debatable subject in absence of other lucid causes of death. ····· 1036125727

Enhanced Coral Larval Settlement and Coral Transplantation in Tanzania

····· lezzter Preis 71.10€ ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Coral reefs are complex ecosystems and play an important role in the socio-economy of the coastal communities. However, global climate change and anthropogenic disturbances threatens the existence of these ecosystems. In order to contribute knowledge towards sustainable management of coral reefs, investigations were conducted: (a) on seasonal patterns of seawater temperature, macroalgal abundance and sedimentation rates (b) on coral larval settlement patterns on artificial plates and (c) on the survival and growth of transplanted coral fragments of different species on degraded reef habitats and on artificial substrates. Seasonal patterns in seawater temperature, macroalgal abundance, sedimentation rate, and coral larval settlement was revealed. Coral transplantation studies revealed that fragments as small as 0.5-5 cm could be cultured, but survival and growth was higher on larger fragments. Coral restoration using cemented fragments on artificial structures showed better results than unattached fragments. The enhancement of the coral reef environment by the use of artificial settlement plates and fragment-support structures in various ways is discussed. ····· 1036125673

The Impacts of L.Camara & Eucalyptus Sp. on Indigenous Woody Tree Sp.

····· lezzter Preis 44.10€ ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
This study investigated the factors enhancing invasion by L. camara (L.) and Eucalyptus species and their impacts on the indigenous woody tree species diversity and density at Khami. A vegetation survey of the species structure and composition of indigenous woody trees and exotic trees at sampled areas invaded and not invaded by L. camara and Eucalyptus species was done in order to determine their impact on the indigenous trees diversity and density. The results showed that L. camara and Eucalyptus sp. out competed indigenous trees significantly reducing their species richness, abundance, density and basal area. They both have a high water usage, which enable them to competitively displace indigenous trees. Eucalyptus sp. formed a closed canopy limiting light penetration and causing an increase in the height of the indigenous trees. L. camara releases chemicals (allelopathy) into the soil suppressing the regeneration of the indigenous trees. It is recommended that further research and monitoring be done to establish the rate of spread of the exotics in order to strategize and prioritize on their eradication and control on the varied ecosystems of Khami World Heritage Site. ····· 1036125319

Habitat suitability modelling of northern pike (Esox lucius)

····· lezzter Preis 71.10€ ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Over the past half-century, habitat changes have drastically affected production of northern pike in all over the world. Pike are keystone predators responsible for determining the structure of certain fish community assemblages. Therefore, predicting their habitat needs is critical for river management. This book determines the appropriate variables and ecosystem processes by using a set of data driven models to predict habitat suitability of pike in rivers. To achieve this, the use of suitable ecological modelling methods can be very important to support river management and water policy because a better interpretation of the river status can be possible, the causes of the status of a river can be detected and assessment methods can be optimised. Models can allow for calculating the effect of future river restoration actions on aquatic ecosystems and supporting the selection of the most sustainable options. They can also help to find the major gaps in our knowledge of river systems and help to set-up cost effective monitoring programmes. Based on the developed model, focusing on the structural-habitat variables would be the main priority for the survival of pike population. ····· 1036125274

····· lezzter Preis 53.10€ ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
A baseline study of two wetlands of Punjab i.e. Chashma Barrage on River Indus and Mangla Dam on River Jehlum were undertaken to study the comparative ecological study of aquatic macroinvertebrates. Pelagic invertebrates were studied for their diversity, number and diel vertical migration in the summer and the winter seasons. The aquatic physico-chemical factors were taken under consideration as these were affected by the season and time of the day at which the sampling was done. The physico-chemical factors of wetlands were investigated to study the diversity of fauna and flora. Diel vertical migration was observed in both the study areas from dawn to dusk proving that the invertebrates distribute themselves vertically in the water ccolumn at different times if the day for food and protection purposes. Thus saying that both habitats of Mangla Dam pond areas were found to have better habitat and physico-chemical factors to support both fauna and flora throughout the year as compared to Chashma Barrage pond areas. ····· 1036125192

Fire & Soil

····· lezzter Preis 53.10€ ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Fire is a natural component of many ecosystems, which include plants and animals that interact with one another and with their physical environment. There is much yet to be learned about how fire affects ecosystems. Each fire and each ecosystem has unique properties. Fire alters the physical and chemical properties and the microbial population of the soil. Though there are number of studies available concerning to fire in natural forests and grasslands, but studies related to fire in restored ecosystems particularly in mined restored areas are very few. Sequential development in vegetation communities, amelioration of site quality with reference to soil fertility and microbial activities are integral processes followed in restored ecosystem and how these processes are deviated from its natural way in an event of fire is a matter of great interest to the ecologists. Moreover, there have been very few studies on soil microbial biomass so far in context to mined areas especially in India so far. Present work is an attempt made by the authors in this perspective. ····· 1036124959

Mangrove crab burrowing ecology

····· lezzter Preis 53.10€ ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Burrowing sesarmid crab (family: Grapsidae) and fiddler crabs (family: Ocypodidae) are among the most abundant macrofauna inhabiting the tropical and sub-tropical mangrove forests. They construct and maintain burrow structures in mangrove sediments with a significant engineering effect on their habitats and associated organisms. Based on current literature on the biology and ecology of these crabs, there is growing evidence that their activities have considerable impact on ecosystem functioning. The present study revealed that burrowing grapsid (Helice formosensis and Perisesarma bidens) and fiddler (Uca vocans) crabs are active ecosystem engineers which affect biochemical activities in different ways. Through burrow construction and maintenance, feeding and production of faeces, they alter sediment physicochemical properties, lipids and fatty acid distributions, organic matter quality and quantities and production of subtropical mangrove forests. ····· 1036124771

····· lezzter Preis 44.10€ ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Researchers working on air pollutants and their effect on plants will find this book interesting. Among various air pollutants this book focuses on ozone. Ozone (O3) is one of the most serious phytotoxic air pollutants. Current impacts of the oxidant air pollutant, ozone (O3), on vegetation are substantial, essentially global and increasing with rising population and industrialization. Most of the studies on the effect of ozone are confined to agricultural crop plants, fiber crops and gymnosperms. Studies on medicinal plants, an important group of economically important plants, which play a major role in health care system, are lacking. With growing industrialization and fossil fuel consumption ground level ozone concentration are likely to increase in future but it is not known how the medicinal plants are going to respond to this inevitable factor. This study was taken up with the purpose of studying the response of some important local medicinal plants against ozone stress. ····· 1036124754
