Clearance and replacement of riparian vegetation with cultivated crops and tree communities may significantly affect their structure and function. This study focused on the impacts of catchment land use changes on the limnology of low order tropical streams. Striking differences were found between the two reaches, with the stream reach adjacent to the agricultural catchment exhibiting elevated and highly variable discharge and temperature regimes, conductivity, pH, ionic constituents, sediment and nutrient loads. Total litter standing stock, was however, significantly higher at the forested site (177.3 37.5 gDW.m2) than the cultivated site (81.7 32.9 gDW.m2). Total benthic macroinvertebrate abundance, diversity, evenness and species richness were higher at the cultivated stream. It is concluded that changes in catchment land use from native forestry to agriculture impacted strongly on the stream ecological conditions by causing changes on the stream morphology, hydrology, water quality and riparian vegetation composition and cover. It represents an important step towards understading what regulates the diversity and distribution of anuran amphibians in tropical environments. In the first chapter I investigated the role of abiotic factors in the spatial and temporal distribution and diversity of tadpoles. I found that canopy cover was the monst important variable influencing the occurrence of species. The second chapter evaluates the niche partitioning in three important axes: food, time and space. I found that tadpoles overlaped in food resource use, but differed in spatial distribution and temporal occurrence. Lastly, the third and last chapter dealt with joint habitat selection by tadpoles and predaceous aquatic insects at the metacommunity scale. The results showed that tadpoles and insects were randomly distributed in ponds. Further analysis pointed out that they appeared to select ponds irrespective of each other, but according to similar pond characteristics. Bacterial species isolated from such an environment can be used for various bioremediation purposes. Though till now we could not find any literacy showing Bacillus spp. showing engine oil degrading potential, but in our present study we found Bacillus spp. showing the maximum oil degradation potential. It has some advantages over the Pseudomonas spp., as it is less pathogenic in comparison to the Pseudomonas spp. and can be handled in normal lab conditions and can also be recommended to use in bioremediation purposes in the treatment of engine oil as our study shows it giving the best cell density when growing on a media containing used engine oil. ····· 10361147282

Bearing this in mind and implementing it as means of preemptive actions to increase management and conservation plan efficiency, while reducing collateral damage to non-focal species, this book researches the implications for the conservation of iconic creatures: crocodiles. Assuming that the more similar two species are, the more likely they are to compete, the book negotiates a natural state ratio between sympatric crocodilians using skull shape comparison. It presents a step-by-step process through the basics of taking photographs of skulls to the mathematics of theoretical ecology in order to define previously unconsidered applications of morphometrics within ecological conservation. Along the way, it also highlights landmarks of interest within crocodilian skull morphology and concerns with currently used conservation methods. The study first examines the nature of fire frequency patterns in the GNP, their relationship with rainfall and later, the resultant impacts of fires on woodlands. The break point year in the fire occurrence trends in GNP was 1987. There was a strong positive correlation between number of fires and year (r = 0.79) between 1969 and 1987. In contract, between 1987 and 2005, there was a negative correlation between number of fires and year (r = 0.49). There was a positive correlation (r = 0.44) between the percentage area burnt by fires and annual rainfall in GNP between 1969 and 2005. A total of 64 woody plant species were recorded in the two woodlands namely, Combretum apiculatum (44) and Colophospermum mopane (20) from 1,986 individual woody plants sampled. In both the C. apiculatum and mopane woodlands, high species diversities were found in the high fire frequency burn zones. The study results suggest that repeated burning alters woodland structure and composition in savanna areas. Developing adaptable fire management plans is hence paramount. ····· 10361147010

They receive, however, little assistance from governments and scholars alike. Those working in the hard agricultural sciences often don t know the actual needs and potentials for grassroot climate adaptation. Those working in the soft sciences supporting farmers often don t understand vulnerabilities or opportunities of poor people created by the consequences of a changing climate. Absence of extension services well trained in the degrading environmental and social conditions of farmers worsens the situation. A rural response to climate change must bring among others applied anthropology and applied agrometeorology closer to the livelihood of farmers. Farmers must get the opportunity to learn about climate preparedness and climate adaptation potentials in a true partnership with dedicated scholars. This book reports on some attempts to bring farmers and scholars together in a few of such partnerships in Indonesia. Agrometeorological learning of farmers to better cope with climate change is shown to be difficult but possible if scholars want to listen to farmers. ····· 10361146728

With more than half of Guatemala City situated within the lake s watershed, sediments, polluted runoff and sewage constantly get deposited into the lake, turning it into a dead, eutrophic body of water with high contamination ratings comparable to a sewage tank. Most people living on in this watershed don t imagine that the untreated domestic waste that they dump into the river is partly to blame for the catastrophic degradation of Lake Amatitlan. This research characterizes the watershed of the lake, looks at the contaminants and issues affecting it, evaluates remediation strategies currently being used and suggests alternative strategies based on ecological restoration design. These new strategies are inspired by case studies of effective modern practices for filtration, remediation, management and environmental education. Additionally, the design of an educational wetland park near the lake will demonstrate how natural processes can be used to filter polluted effluents and provide a habitat for native species. ····· 10361146518

As a result of construction of the dam, about 100 villages with a total population about 15,000 persons, mostly tribal, were affected in the reservoir area. The catchment area is 1,860 sq. km and maximum submerged area is 9,430 ha. The area has been experiencing soil erosion due to inadequate forest cover, denudation of forest, uncontrolled grazing. Some program of social and farm forestry were launched but have not made any significant headway. There is lot of scope of pisciculture and tourism in the reservoir area but unfortunately no initiative has been taken in this direction. High humidity as a consequence of heavy rainfall and high temperatures are to be mentioned as the predominant constraints for vegetable production in the humid tropics. Furthermore infestations by pests and diseases lead to severe crop-damages, thus, the consumption of pesticides increases remarkably. In order to address these problems, an adapted greenhouse, having large ventilation opening area at 105% of total floor surface area and covered with insect-proof nets has been developed and tested. Whereas expert opinion as a CEA method has been long recognized, a participatory rural appraisal (PRA) as another important method was largely overlooked despite its strong validity under the circumstances when the required environmental data sets are not available. The gaps due to the lack of parametric data hence call for further development of PRA to complement with the CEA tool. The need to overcome the shortage of data sets is thought to be particularly important due to the fact that the developing world comprises most of the world s ecosystems, biodiversity and human population. ····· 10361146168
