The present study presents an overview of the changing state of the forests and explores hypotheses regarding the causes of change in the forest cover and its quality. It also gives a brief overview of the economic importance of the forests and the legal and institutional framework for the forest sector in India. Forest Strategy is inadequate to cope with all the diverse demands that India faces in the sector. India needs a balance of its three policy orientations production forestry, afforestation, and protection/regeneration to have an effective forest strategy, in addition to an enabling environment that promotes research and extension and private sector participation. Support for production forestry does not imply agreement with the essential features of industrial forestry, like replacement of natural forests with monoculture. It merely implies incorporation of a production oriented approach. ····· 10361147166

Amaryllis belongs to family Amaryllidaceae, a family of perennial bulbous plants which are extremely variable in flower colour and foliage usually with a solitary flower and has tremendous value for native ornamental land scaping. The common means of Amaryllis propagation are from seeds and by vegetative methods. Seed being very small in size have low rate of germination and seed propagation also results in variation. Plant Tissue Culture is providing new means for the conservation and rapid propagation of true to type, valuable, endangered and disease free plants. It is an effective method for propagation of those plant species which are difficult to propagate by conventional methods with limiting disease transfer to progeny plants, where destructive harvesting have decreased the population size. Commercial growers are now turning towards tissue culture techniques for mass propagation of important ornamental and horticulture plants. ····· 10361147102

Co-operatives are generally seen as the means for uplifting the condition of fishermen. Despite this apparent contradiction, there has been little research on the fishery co-operatives. This study aimed to fill the information gaps and provide a knowledge basis for intervention in the co-operative institution. Its broad objective was to analyse, using socio-economic approaches, the structure, strategies and performance of the Lake Victoria co-operatives and propose their potential roles and conditions for involvement in co-management of the fishery. This thesis has described the characteristics and strategies of the Lake Victoria fishery co-operatives. It has proposed an approach - the stakeholders criteria - for evaluating co-operative performance. On the basis of the criteria, the factors affecting the performance of the co-operatives of Lake Victoria have been analysed. Three models in organizational theory have been used to explain further the performance factors. The study has suggested roles for co-operatives in co-management. From the overall results it could be concluded that it was possible to control root growth, and estimate the proper amount of water accordingly. Consequently, it was possible to reduce water and nutrient loss, which could also help to reduce the environmental pollution. Consequently, it can be said that the obtained equations can be used to establish an easy way to predict the values of crop coefficient (Kc) and root volume and distribution at any time after planting during the same growth season and in the regions having similar climatic conditions. Moreover, these equations could be used with the irrigation scheduling programs in Egyptian software which programmed in Central Laboratory for Agricultural Climate (CLAC). Growers should pay attention to crop appearance, soil water tension, the rate of crop evapotranspiration, precipitation, and the amount of water applied. With knowledge of these factors, irrigation can be well managed in order to obtain high yields of better quality tubers along with environmental protection (Pereira and Shock, 2006). ····· 10361147076

Physiology of Sub 1 QTL in Rice

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Developing crops that are better adapted to abiotic stresses is important for food production in many parts of the world today. Submergence stress because of flash flooding is one of the major constraints to rice production in rainfed lowland areas of the tropics. A major QTL against such stress, Submergence1 (Sub1) was identified from indica variety FR13A. It contains a cluster of three genes, Sub1A, Sub1B and Sub1C. All three genes encode putative ethylene response factors (ERFs). Sub1A-1 is a primary determinant of submergence tolerance in rice. This book describing different physiological mechanism associated with Sub 1 QTL in rice under submergence. Which will help in varietal development of submergence tolerant rice varieties through conventional breeding and biotechnological means. This book is especially useful to students/researchers in life science field, who may be utilizing for future breeding or development of submergence tolerant rice cultivars. ····· 10361147063

Productivity and Egg Quality in Commercial Brown Laying Hens

für 61.20€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
In this book, some factors affecting productivity and egg quality in brown laying hens were studied and discussed. From the study of the effect of methionine, linoleic acid and supplemented fat in the diet it could be concluded that the levels of these components of commercial diets currently used in Spain, in the last part of the production cycle, can be reduced considerably without any effect on hen productivity and little effect on egg quality. In response to the influence of calcium level and source of the diet of laying hens it could be concluded that brown egg-laying hens late in the production cycle require more than 3.5% Ca in the diet (4.08 g Ca/d) to maintain productivity and shell quality. Also, the substitution of part of the fine limestone of the diet by coarse limestone or oyster shell does not affect productive performance and tibia characteristics although it might improve some shell quality traits. Regarding the influence of main cereal and mean particle size of the cereal in the diet of laying hens it could be concluded that both corn and hard wheat can be used indistinctly in diets for laying hens when ground to pass through a 6- to 10-mm screen. ····· 10361147047

Ficus thonnningii is an important fodder plant in Northern Ethiopia. Even if, oldest trees were planted for other purposes such as shade trees in churches and traditional meeting places, recurrent droughts have made local farmers to improvise using the drought resistant F. thonningii plants as dry season animal fodder and other multipurpose benefits. Currently, the merits of F. thonningii are well understood by local farmers who are cultivating the plant intensively for its various benefits, besides animal fodder. However, despite its intensive use by local people, it is not included in the list of mainstream fodder trees by local government and locals are being forced to adopt less adaptable and less productive species against their preference. This is mainly due to lack of scientific information which could support the adoption of F. thonningii as a fodder tree of multiple benefits in Northern Ethiopia. Mr. Mulubrhan has evaluated the local use, feed value, browse biomass production, and effects on soil fertility of of F. thonningii and has recommended its propagation and use in similar regions. ····· 10361147003

Karnal bunt (KB) disease incited by Tillelia indica is widely distributed and an economically important disease of wheat. The present study, attempts were made to find out the physiological, biochemical and molecular basis of resistant and stage specific immunity, against KB.The enzymes of phenylpropanoid pathway were expressed and remained higher in resistant genotype. Phenylpropanoid metabolism is involved in synthesis of carotenoid, act as precursor of ABA synthesis. The low carotenoid levels in resistant than susceptible genotype due to its more conversion in to ABA pool, induced downstream jasmonic acid mediated pathway and caused induction of PR- proteins (b-1,3 glucanase, protease and protease inhibitors) in wheat spikes. Stoichiometric balance of protease and protease inhibitor play key role in controlling the resistance by intervention of programmed cell death (PCD). The results of present study clearly demonstrated that resistant is due to involvement of multi component signaling leading to genotype to genotype dependent and stages dependent immunity against KB and cystatin-proteinase interaction is key factors in triggering plant defence against pathogenic fungi. ····· 10361146965

For the last many years pathologist around the world are trying to evolve non-monetary and environment friendly methods to control the soil born pathogens. Pakistan is an agricultural country with poor yield of cash crops due to many environmental constraints, the pathogens, been the most important. However, in our country this aspect of scientific research has not yet attained due attention. Therefore the present investigation was carried out for the biological control of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceri the cause of chickpea wilt to achieve this goal, soil solarization technique was exploited by using tarping single and double layer polyethylene sheets. Both techniques were found effective for the control of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceri however, desirable results for the control of the target pathogen were achieved under double layer of polyethylene sheet. It seems to be due to high temperature achieved under this treatment, as Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceri remained unable to tolerate the situation. This cultural method may prove effective against the control of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceri for field application in our agro-eco systems . ····· 10361146911

Handbook of REEs

It is known that rare earth elements (REEs) comprise a homogenous group of elements in the periodic system. They include the elements scandium (Sc), yttrium (Y) and 15 lanthanides with successive atomic numbers from 57 to 71. In fact, the term rare earth elements is misleading because these elements are not rare. The abundances of cerium (average concentration in the Earth s crust 60 mg kg-1), lanthanum (average 30 mg kg-1), and neodymium (average 28 mg kg-1) are similar to those of copper (average 55 mg kg-1), lead, tin and cobalt. Data on the biological effects of REEs are scarce and contradictory. This book, therefore, covers the following Chapters: history of REEs (Chapter 1), characterization of REEs (Chapter 2), occurrence of REEs in nature and organisms (Chapter 3 and 4), biochemistry and physiology of REEs (Chapter 5,) factors affecting mobility and bioavailability of REEs in soils (Chapter 6), REEs in plants (Chapter 7), ecotoxicology of REEs (Chapter 8), and soil biology and REEs (Chapter 9). ····· 10361146897

Soil erosion is an environmental time bomb. Most agency reports and government publications highlight the degradation of the soils as a major development challenge. But soil and water conservation efforts in Africa have had a long history. Attempts have been made from the colonial era to present time to introduce soil and water conservation measures in a wide range of agro ecological settings, yet many have failed. Being one of the drought prone and famine affected African countries, Ethiopia started a program of soil and water conservation measures on the highlands but the result was far less than expectation. The most influential factors for less adoption of physical soil and water conservation measures, besides socio-political and environmental factors, are land lost by physical soil and water conservation measures and low return from such conservation measures. Application of organic matter is one of the cost effective method and very important in soil and water conservation for it has a capacity of improving soil chemical and physical properties to affect measured runoff, soil loss and crop yield. ····· 10361146870
