HIV and intestinal helminth parasites in South African adults

für 71.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
The convergent distribution of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and helminth infections has led to the suggestion that infection with helminths exacerbates the HIV epidemic in developing countries. A large body of suggestive evidence in support of this hypothesis has been accumulated in many countries over the past two decades. Although 57% of the South African population lives in poverty and carry the highest burden of both HIV and helmith infection, the disease interactions are under-researched in South Africa. This book details work undertaken in Khayelitsha, an informal settlement in the Western Cape Province of South Africa, where both HIV and intestinal helminth infections are highly prevalent. The immune profile of adults who are either singly-or dually- infected with HIV and Ascaris lumbricoides and/or Trichuris trichuria, plus non-infected HIV negative controls, is described in relation to the ability to control HIV infection. Four different phenotypes that respond differently to helminth infection are described and immunological profile related to HIV pathogenesis analysed. ····· 103613490

Archaea in boreal forest tree roots and mycorrhizas

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Archaea, the third domain of Life, were long thought to live only in extreme habitats, such as hot springs, deep sea hydrothermal vents, and brines. During the last two decades specific archaeal lineages have been found to be wide spread in many `normal` and cold environments, and to be responsible for important parts of the elemental cycles, such as ammonia oxidation and carbon fixation. A certain group of the `non-extreme` archaea, the group I.1c Crenarchaeota, now belonging to the Thaumarchaeota, were shown to prefer acidic boreal forest soil environments and have only rarely been found in other environments. These archaea appear to be especially associated with the roots of boreal forest trees and the ectomycorrhizal fungi that inhabit these boreal forest tree roots. These habitats were also shown to be colonised by uncultured archaea most closely affiliating with hyperhalophilic Halobacteria and with both acetoclastic and methylotrophic methanogens. The ecological role of these archaea is not yet known. However, the tree and fungal species have an impact on the archaeal communities. The striving to reveal the ecological roles of these archaea is still ongoing. ····· 103613414

The incidence of dermatomycoses has risen dramatically all over the world. Athlete s foot is common and difficult to treat and if untreated, may lead to bacterial infection of the lower leg skin (cellulites). These fungus diseases are clinically termed as the Tineas or Dermatomycoses. Ringworm infections of skin are most prominent and remain a common clinical problem despite the availability of several antimycotic drugs. These synthetic agents are non biodegradable and cause adhesive effects and residual toxicity. Therefore, keeping this fact in mind, the study have been carried out to isolate novel antifungal antibiotic producing bacteria. In the course of screening programme, a Bacillus subtilis MTCC-8114 was isolated, which showed activity against Microsporum fulvum & Trichophyton mentagrophytes. The antibiotic was characterized as peptide antifungal antibiotic and also found stable at different physiological conditions (temperature, pH, incubation period, aeration & non-aeration).

····· 103612153
