Excitonic Approach to Ultrafast Optical Response of Semiconductors

An excitonic approach to treating the coherent dynamics of optically generated charge carriers in semiconductor nanostructures is presented in this work. The main feature of this approach is that it includes exchange interactions and phase space filling effects, which have generally been omitted in previous excitonic treatments of coherent dynamics, so that it can go beyond the low excitation limit. In contrast to the well-known semiconductor Bloch equations, this approach treats intraband correlations without factorization. The excitonic formalism and the obtained excitonic equations are shown to be particularly advantageous in systems where bound excitons dominate the optical response and where intraband correlations play a central role. The excitonic formalism presented here is an efficient approach that can be applied in a wide range of systems, which makes it a potential alternative to the standard semiconductor Bloch equations for many systems where the intraband correlations are crucial. ····· 1036192421

Monte Carlo studies of liquid crystalline systems

Liquid crystals are soft materials, surface induced ordering can lead to novel and interesting director structures on appropriate confinement. Ideally simulations of liquid crystals require application of off-lattice models. However, the nematic-isotropic phase transition being the main focus of investigations in this work can be studied with lattice models which are computationally simple to tackle. Conventional Monte Carlo techniques like Metropolis sampling method fail to overcome problems associated with first-order phase transitions efficiently and hence the need for non-Boltzmann techniques. These techniques like Wang-Landau algorithm are known to be efficient in overcoming the energy barriers near phase transitions. However, such methods were applied earlier to study models with discrete energies like Ising model and require system-dependent modifications to study continuous models. In this monograph, we describe the development and application of such novel methods to investigate complex liquid crystalline systems like strongly confined liquid crystals and liquid crystal elastomers for reasonable system sizes and also mention the draw backs in the case of larger systems. ····· 1036192319

The present work deals with the investigation of Nanocrystalline semiconducting oxide thin films. We have particularly undertaken the investigation of undoped and Al, In and Co doped ZnO films. In the present work Zinc oxide films were fabricated by a homemade chemical spray pyrolysis system (CSPT) equipped with an optical set-up ensuring the in-situ control of the film growth. This CSPT has been found to be easy, inexpensive and well adapted for mass fabrication. A number of ZnO samples have been prepared by using different type of dopants having different dopant concentrations.The above prepared films have been characterized for their structural, morphological, electrical and optical properties as a function of doping concentrations and effect of change in dopants as well as doping concentrations on the physical and structural properties of ZnO films studied. In another piece of work, we have investigated the effect of ion implantation in Si particularly, the nature and concentration of defects by using positron annihilation techniques. . Due to its attractive properties such as high saturated velocities of charge carriers and very low carrier freeze-out temperatures, germanium is considered to be a possible replacement for silicon as the semiconductor of choice for high-performance devices. Before it can be adopted, suitable materials for making electrical contacts to the active areas of the germanium based devices must be identified. This work looks at metal-germanium systems of the Platinum Metals Group (PGMs). We analyze several aspects of the thin film and lateral diffusion reactions in these systems using, micro-Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and optical microscopy. The study of lateral diffusion couples is particularly well suited for dealing with the challenges of achieving the required lateral abruptness of semiconductor junctions as well as low contact resistance. Films of Ti were used as inert markers to follow diffusion during iridium germanide and platinum germanide growth. For device integrity, it is important to identify the dominant diffusing species during the formation of the respective germanides as it affects their thermal stability. ····· 1036192218

The electrical conductivity is a useful quantity for estimating the isothermal crystallization parameters for the chalcogenide. The growth parameter for crystallization was found to increase with the addition of Sn to Se-Te which can be attributed to homogeneous two dimensional growths of crystallites. The value of n obtained is 2.6225 ± 0.1225. As the value of n obtained is between 2 and 3, this indicates a 2 dimensional growth with a disc like particles changing to rod like formation with temperature and time. The value of activation energy EG due to graph is obtained as 3.8821eV, which is higher than obtained by other workers.
