The interplay of migration and population dynamics in a patchy world

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
One of the fundamental issues in spatial ecology is how explicit considerations of space alter the prediction of population models, or what insights they may give into the cause of broad-scale patterns. Classical theories, such as diffusion- driven instability and metapopulation dynamics which are developed via simple spatial population models, have profoundly increased our understanding of the issue. In this work these theories are scrutinized under more general framework within which mechanistic processes of spatial interaction of populations are considered. A number of models are derived to study the interplay of migration and local population dynamics in a discrete spatial grid. The potential readers of this work are graduate students or researchers in the area of theoretical ecology, especially those who are interested in deriving models mechanistically. ····· 10361102291

The End of Inequality

für 71.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
The End of Inequality covers the global arena in the quest for a diagnosis and a cure of the problems confronting mankind, the magnitude of which is enormous and vast. It is also not possible to address all issues in one go. Nevertheless, an attempt has been made in this book in compiling some such issues under one umbrella. Facts have been presented with comments. Some ideas like Trauma (engineering) centers need to be set up to help those who have gone through traumatic circumstances- war, sexual abuse, and natural disasters. As far as the world s underprivileged is concerned, emphasis should be given on education for children, economic rehabilitation for the middle aged and social rehabilitation for aged people. The book also speaks about ways of fostering world peace and co-operation. Thought provoking and challenging, it suggests that we share responsibility for the planet. Much remains to be done, as a major challenge for all actors governments, civil society and the private sector. THIS CALLS FOR COMMON SOLUTIONS TO EMERGING GLOBAL CONCERNS. Finally, the book has no solutions or remedies as such. But it offers HOPE for mankind. ····· 10361102276

Movement and Behaviour of the New Zealand Eagle Ray

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
The ability of intertidal species to navigate through the shallow waters of estuaries and orient themselves in such a featureless environment is a continuing area of interest for many researchers. The New Zealand Eagle Ray, Myliobatis tenuicaudatus, is one of these intertidal species that has developed the ability to utilize these highly productive intertidal habitats and stay safe from stranding. It has been suggested that the use of tidal information and particularly orientation to water currents may be one cue that is used to avoid stranding on an outgoing tide. The movements of M. tenuicaudatus in relation to the tides were tracked and analyzed using GPS data-loggers, telemetry transmitter/receivers, and software for behavioural modelling. The models show a definitive use of the tides for transiting movement in and out of the estuary during rising and falling tides, while also showing their resting/feeding behaviour in the channels in the lower part of the estuary at low tide, and across the mudflats in different areas at times of high tide. There is much work to be done but this data provides great insight into the movement and behaviour of intertidal species. ····· 10361102248

Biodiversity Conservation in Nepal

für 71.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Nepal`s biodiversity is regarded as being of tremendous importance for supporting the livelihood of the people. There are different national policies in place for the conservation and management of biodiversity. However, there are constant threats to biodiversity due to the inadequacy of these policies and regulations, and deficient local implementation practices. An actor-oriented conceptual framework approach was used to analyse national policies and local practices. This analytical framework has been used to assess functional roles and linkages between the actors responsible for national policies and the local practices. The sustainable livelihood analysis with a particular focus on the livelihood asset building processes was used for studying forest based livelihood issues. Even though some special policy objectives were formulated to address the livelihood issues of the people dependent on forest biodiversity, there are inadequate responses to implement them. ····· 10361102243

Anti-oxidative stress of two Egyptian crustacean extracts in rat

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Antioxidants or free radical scavengers are very important in protecting the living cells against any damage induced by free radicals which are produced continuously in cells either during phagocytosis or accidentally as by-product metabolites. Each biological system has certain antioxidant mechanisms against the aggregations of such free radicals. Products from freshwater and marine sources have recently become attractive as nutraceutical and functional foods as well as a source material for the development of drugs and specific health foods. Since, the red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii (Girard, 1852) and Erugosquilla massavensis, (Koossmann,1880) are rich in taurine and other sulphur containing amino acid, we aim to throw the light for the first time in Egypt on their antioxidant activity and subsequently their curative effect against CCl4 induced hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity as well as erythrocytes toxicity in rats. ····· 10361102233

Biodiversity Conservation in Buffer Zone - Problems and Opportunities

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Household well-being is directly linked with the conservation program launched in buffer zone community, which is also reflected in Pithauli Buffer Zone VDC of Chitwan National Park. The study was conducted in randomly sampled 70 households, 30 vegetation plots. The forest patches in Pithauli VDC decreased by 37.52% between 1978 and 1992. But there is appreciable increase in forest area in 2000 by 61.8% after the delineation of buffer zone and handing over the forest to the community. In spite of this success, the Buffer Zone forest can sustainably fulfill 31.32% and 1.02% of household annual fuel wood and fodder demand. The deficit is largely met through the Park and private lands. However people extract 66.75% of fuel wood and 17.65% of fodder demand from buffer zone forest indicating the over harvesting of resources may exist. A great majority of households were indifferent to the Buffer Zone activities carried out and the budget they share. Rhinos were considered the most destructive animal creating crop damage to the villagers. The damage of agriculture products in each year caused by rhinos made the local people behave adversely on park and park management. ····· 10361102117

Diatom Resistance to Digestion and Diatom Community Structure

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
The capacity of diatom species to survive gastrointestinal passage through algivorous minnows was examined. In order to determine whether diatom taxa varied in digestibility, live/dead ratios of cells taken from the minnows` feces were compared with live/dead ratios of cells taken from immersed rocks. With the use of Cluster analyses and Student`s t tests, it was concluded that certain diatom species and genera were more resistant to digestion than others. Diatom species that are readily available to grazers are more resistant to digestion, and vice versa. Diatoms that are less available to grazers are less resistant to digestion. Interspecific variation among diatoms in vulnerability to ingestion and digestion may affect community structure and the functioning of benthic algae. ····· 10361102109

The Ecology of Little Blue Penguins

für 71.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Seabirds are increasingly being used as biological indicators since they are largely influenced by changes associated with the marine environment. At present the New Zealand populations of Little Blue Penguins (LBP: Eudyptula minor) are classified as Threatened` and in Gradual Decline` by the Department of Conservation. Effective conservation management of the North Island sub-species requires an understanding of the factors affecting their survival and breeding success. There is little information on the breeding ecology of the E. minor, especially in the North Island of New Zealand. The overall goal of this study was to establish baseline data on a North Island population of LBP in New Zealand. The aims of this study were to 1) identify population demographics, 2) quantify breeding success and identify abiotic and biotic parameters influencing nesting success, 3) identify feeding ecology based on diet and trophic level assessment, and 4) identify cause of death and underlying patterns associated with mass mortalities of the LBP species. By acknowledging the different parts of the penguins lifecycle as a whole, we can greater understand the links between the land and the sea. ····· 10361101942

Simulation and Generalisation of Agricultural Resource Use

für 61.20€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Simulation and generalisation of agricultural resource use is problematical for three reasons. First, it is important how- and to which extent research results are generalised, because the choice of boundary conditions for research interferes with the conclusions. Second, the availability and accuracy of data interferes with the significance of the conclusions. Third, the combination of research from different disciplines is difficult, and requires communication across mindsets and institutional barriers. A framework of hierarchy and scale was defined with the aim to support and evaluate generalisation processes and the conveyance of information between sciences and between science and decision-makers. Within this framework, the four case studies of agricultural resource use in the form of fossil energy and nitrogen, respectively, were performed. The weaknesses of the generalisation procedures were related to the three points, stated above: the boundary definition, the data availability and the degree of interdisciplinarity. Further research in these questions is recommended. ····· 10361101648

Microscopic Algae in Monitoring of the Yarqon River

für 61.20€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
In the Yarqon River during 2003-2006 we identified 313 taxa of algae and cyanobacteria belonging to eight taxonomical divisions. 85.6% of species were indicators of environmental conditions that characterized the river water as alkaline with medium mineralization. In rainy and dry seasons the algal taxonomic compositions were very different with prevailing diatoms in the winter and cyabobacteria and greens in summer. Bio-indication and experiments shows that self-purification process was more intensive during the rainy season, while the low level of river water in the dry season stressed out the algal community and take 2-3 weeks. By employing CCA analysis some indicators of highly mineralized water with high pH, anthropogenic pollution, and euthrophication were revealed as well as biosensor species sensitive to the advent of anthropogenic pollution. We therefore conclude that the combination of bioindicational and bio-test methods with statistics is effective in the determination of the main factors influencing algal diversity. The obtained results can be used for water quality assessment and in monitoring systems of Israeli and other Mediterranean coastal rivers. ····· 10361101601

Biogeography of Intertidal Species Along the Portuguese Rocky Coast

für 71.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
This work updates the distributional records of more than 200 intertidal species inhabiting the rocky Portuguese coast. Results suggest that abundance and diversity of epifaunal invertebrates are most likely linked to physical factors rather than to the identity of the host algal species. A novel analytical tool to locate multivariate boundaries in one-dimensional and unevenly distributed data is also presented. Several species are identified as sensitive indicators of climate change. Many are warm-water species shifting their ranges towards the north, most likely driven by the recent increase in temperature and associated changes in coastal sea circulation. Surprisingly, no consistent pattern was observed among cold-water species. Thus, data here presented suggest that modifications in distributional ranges are complex and highly variable in intensity, direction and causal factors, and thus generalizations about poleward range shifts due to increasing temperature should be made with caution. ····· 10361101590

Bioremediation of Textile Dyes and Effluent:

It is known that microorganisms (especially bacteria) that are under constant exposure to the synthetic chemicals can be used against industry polluted waters. Accordingly, reactive and disperse group of dyes have been screened for decolorization by two groups of novel isolates from two industrial estates. A few bacteria from the isolates were identified to be potent enough for commercial application. The textile industrial effluent was treated by novel isolates and the treated effluent was used for the irrigation of Brassica nigra and Cyamopsis tetragonolobus as sample studies and their growth parameters were compared with the chemically treated and raw effluent. The raw effluent and the sludge of the chemical treatment had adverse effect while the biologically treated effluent water promoted normal growth of the plants as that of the control ground water. The present study suggests that ecofriendly alternatives are available to combat the anthropogenic pollution and that, it is the need of the hour to explore those possibilities to prevent further deterioration of our environment. ····· 10361101575
