Assessment Of Water Quality Status Of R. Kibisi Mt. Elgon Area, Kenya

für 53.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
The term water quality is applied universally to refer to the water that meets the universal standards set for legitimate and vital water use at any scale i.e. local, regional and international levels. The evolution of the term water quality has been due to the expansion of water requirements and ability to measure and interpret water characteristics. The definition of water quality depends on the factors that determine it, and other variables that affect the nature of water resource. Pollution and degradation of water quality interferes with legitimate and vital water use at any scale i.e. local, regional and international levels. However, water quality standards have been established for regulatory purposes and are determined from judgment on the criteria involved in the standards dependent on domestic, agricultural, industrial and life in aquatic systems. River water quality status is generally affected by many physical, chemical and biological parameters introduced by natural forces and human (anthropogenic) activities. Water quality criteria, standards and related legislation are often used as the main administrative means to manage water resource. ····· 1036199678

Zinc Toxicity on Aquatic Microbial Community

This thesis deals with the effects of ZnCl2 and ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) on Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata (as a single species toxicity test) and aquatic microbial communities (as a community-level toxicity test). The effects of metal ions like Zn2+ on different organisms can be highly variable and there are some studies about the side effects of this metal ion on species occurring in aquatic microbial communities like bacteria, algae and diatoms however, the effects of metal ions on single species is probably not enough accurate to base risk assessment decisions on. In order to obtain environmentally more relevant information about the effects of xenobiotics there are other tests available known as community-level toxicity tests (SWIFT periphton test). The results of single species tests revealed that the toxicity of ZnCl2 and ZnO NPs without surfactant was dramatically high (EC50: 0.007-01 µmol/l). Although these compounds are known to be very toxic for Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, the results of community-level toxicity tests (periphton SWIFT test) revealed that bulk and nano Zinc compounds do not have any specific toxic effects at concentrations lower than 100 µmol/l. ····· 1036199443

Ecosystem management: a path to sustainable and healthy communities

für 71.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
This book addresses the integrated analysis and management of ecological-social systems and argues that the rational integration of local participatory land use planning and regional planning could enhance the sustainable management of resources. This matter was explored in two eco-social systems: the Aysén river watershed in Southern Chile and the Marano lagoon in North East Italy. Aysén region is threatened by the risk of water pollution due to the development of intensive aquaculture in its fjords. Marano lagoon and its hinterland has been declared a polluted area of national concern since human health is threatened by the concentrations of heavy metals in air, soil and water sediments. The research investigates three key issues pertaining to the ecosystem based approach of environmental management within the framework of post-normal science: the consequences of the lack of strategic and integrated planning, the long-term failure of top-down visions in natural resources management and the usefulness of multicriteria analysis to support participatory decision making. ····· 1036199234

The diversity of living organisms is essential for their capacity to evolve and adapt to environmental changes. Therefore, determining the factors responsible for the origin and maintenance of diversity remain central and fundamental research objective. The aim of this book was to understand the evolutionary factors maintaining neutral polymorphism. Using a biological model consisting of the bacterium Escherichia coli and the social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum enable us to study the natural variability of interactions between the two species. In the second part of this work, we studied the bacterial traits involved in this natural variability. In coevolution experiments, we followed temporal allele frequency variations over 300 bacterial generations under four sets of environmental conditions: with or without biotic factor and with or without spatial structure. The aim of theoretical model we developed was to address the demographic stochasticity effects on neutral allele fixation probability and time to fixation. This book should be useful to professionals in experimentation or theoretical models or anyone else who may be concerning about evolution and population genetics. ····· 1036199043

This book is the result of a field research carried out by the author at the Banyang-Mbo Wildlife Sanctuary in southwest Cameroon. The main objective was to develop a better understanding of factors and issues involved in wildlife-human conflict in the area with a view to identifying and recommending appropriate strategies to address the situation. Two surveys and one case study were carried out to get the views of village communities and Banyang-Mbo Wildlife Sanctuary Project, respectively, as the main stakeholders in the conflict. The research found that elephants, cane rats and bush pigs are the major crop-raiders at Banyang-Mbo. Village communities consider crop-raiding levels to be determined by the presence or absence of elephants, whereas the project regards cane rats to be the determining species. It is concluded that the wildlife-human conflict at the area is complicated by a combination of real and perceived causes, largely coloured by a few but important differences in beliefs, values and preferences between the project and the local communities. ····· 1036199008

This study attempts for the first time the use of multi-proxy records from the Eastern Arc Mountain sites to contribute an understanding of past and present environments at regional and local climate, and environmental change spanning the last 50.0 kyr BP. One hypothesis based on inference records indicates that the Eastern Arc forests have been subject to an exceptionally long period of climatic stability an ecological Eden whose biota has survived the tectonic events of the Miocene and Pliocene, and later Pleistocene climatic vicissitudes. The work emphasises the period during the last 20,000 years (Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) to Present. During the LGM, the Eastern Arc Mountain ranges showed benign ecological stability suggesting that they were important refuge blocs and this has driven present floristic composition and distribution. Results from this study have implications for present-day land management and enable policies to be developed that incorporate the long-term perspective on the ecological form and functioning of vegetation and environment. This work concludes with recommendations how palaeoecology is an invaluable tool in understanding vegetation and climate. ····· 1036198744

The atmospheric N-depositions cause acidification and eutrophication in the ecosystems resulting into reduction in soil fertility, alteration in community composition and loss in biodiversity, because each ecosystem has a limit to the amount of N that it can occupy beyond this threshold, the ecosystem may collapse. Information on the effects of N deposition on the soil and vegetation from the dry tropical environment of India are lacking In conclusion, the study indicates that N-treatment showed humped-back pattern for the N-mineralization and species diversity and thus alteration in community composition. Further, N-treatment also caused considerable variations in functional group diversity, seed size and leaf traits. The medium seed size category had maximum number of species and individuals and small seed size category had minimum species and individuals. The number of species within large seed size trait category decreased with increased dose of N. The moderate level of N had greater SLA and LNC, and comparatively less LDMC, suggesting greater resource availability at moderate level of N which supported maximum herbaceous diversity. Thus the study supported N-saturation model. ····· 1036198426

Tropical Asian rivers are highly undertstudied ecological systems. One of the most important taxa for the stability of these ecosystems are freshwater fishes. This study was undertaken to bridge the existing information gap of the population status of riverine fishes in the Western Himalaya. The main objectives were i) to understand the current distribution of fishes ii) to document patterns of fish diversity, and iii) to assess the conservation status of these fishes in the three tributaries of river Ramganga. Results show that Ramganga tributaries have 43 species belonging to five orders and nine families. River Mandal was richest in fish diversity than Kolhu and Khoh respectively. Fifteen species were found to be common across the three tributaries and among them `Barilius barila`, `Garra gotyla` and endangered `Tor putitora` were dominant. Sixty three percent of the fishes were found to be threatened. The region was also found to face many anthropogenic threats such as illegal fishing, sand and boulder mining that can further endanger many riverine fish species. To halt these threats, public awareness and immediate conservation prioritization of these rivers is essential. ····· 1036198383

Modern Boats In African Great-Lakes:

für 53.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
This is a story of fish and fishing in Lake Victoria, one of Africa s Great lakes. In the early 1990s, Uganda started industrial fish processing in response to the lucrative markets overseas. This has led to a situation whereby larger-scale industrial fisheries have been systematically favored in the belief that the benefits derived from the newer fisheries would flow through the economy to the original participants. The customary system, rules and regulations are being replaced through the promotion of conventional science, foreign technology and centralization of power. The question of whether the economic importance of fisheries for local populations/households (that originally survived on the lake s resources) has been tackled is what the study follows. It will further focus on how local fishers employ LEK to sustain their meager economy amidst the interference of state agencies and external actors. It explores how local fishers are coping with the new natural resource management policies and whether Lake Victoria is heading for an environmental catastrophe. ····· 1036198362

The most vulnerable and affected group by the negative impacts of climate change are the least developed countries. This fact is contributed by lack of structural and financial resources to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) developed a technology transfer framework to create a mechanism so that low carbon technologies (LCT`s) are transferred to the least developed country in an effective and sustainable manner in order to curb and reduce the amount of GHG emissions and mitigate the impacts of Climate Change. The book analyses the suitability of the framework in enabling transfer of technology by assessing the suitability of framework using Tanzania as a case study as well as identifying channels of diffusion of LCT`s. Among other things, the book identifies climate entrepreneurs as key players in diffusion and deployment of LCT`s and the significance of a bottom up approach in technology transfering process where local participation and involvement need to be enhanced and strengthened from the initial stages of the process. ····· 1036198245
