Wetlands are vital water bodies, as crucial in a natural ecosystem as kidney in a human body. Apart from being highly productive as the habitat of birds, fishes and a variety of other aquatic life forms-micro-organisms. Wetlands provide other ecosystem services from maintaining the natural balance and for sustaining human livelihoods. Overall wetlands all over the country are exhibiting varying degrees of environmental degradation caused by encroachments, Eutrophication, siltation, urbanization and anthropogenic activities. There is also a misconception that wetlands are only wastelands. As a result, many precious wetlands have been converted to other uses all over in the world. Highly adaptable solutions must be found to permit development activities, including tourism, subsistence agriculture, and conservation of wildlife to be each given a fair share` of the one biome the wetland. This book provides an overview of the wetland study including flora, avifauna, management and restoration measures. It contains methodology of avifaunal survey, water quality analysis and WQI. Forest Carbon Management in India

für 53.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Forests are at once both the single most important source and the sink of carbon dioxide. Forest Carbon Management implies managing forests sustainably for increased carbon sequestration, longer storage and reduced release of carbon dioxide, and efficient transfer of carbon benefits to the stakeholders, consistent with the requirements of biodiversity conservation and the protection of the rights of the indigenous people. It can become reality only with enabling national and provincial policies. The framework for policies and trade strategies proposed in this book would help fulfil obligations under the UNFCCC, lead to significant increase in public and private investment in tree growing, make the rights of tribal and other communities on forests economically meaningful and contribute to the conservation and sustainable use of bio-diversity while ensuring the international credibility of India`s carbon sequestration and storage certification process. ····· 10361101183

With the failure of conventional conservation approach, which looks people as `threat` to nature, recently it is increasing awareness that people should be included in conservation of protected areas. However, exploring case study of Bavi National Park in Vietnam, this paper find out that it is not simply that when local people are allowed to participate in conservation the conservation purpose and local people livelihood development objective will be achieved. The effective of conservation depends very much on how have different actors involved in conservation been interacting and negotiating with each other. In Bavi case due to different interests and gap in knowledge between actors, the powerless such as local ethnic minority people, NGO are gradually excluded in conservation process of the park. The paper concludes that better conservation and local livelihood development are not simply recommendation to increase availability of financial, or just calling for local people participation in conservation but need to pay more attention to the dynamic of actors` interaction and negotiation in resource management process and its influence to the outcome of the conservation. ····· 10361101072

für 61.20€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Developing sustainable mechanisms for use-management of forest products by user communities has been suggested as a possible solution to the often-observed conflict between forest use and the conservation of protected forests. In Zimbabwe, the use of forest products in protected forests by local communities has a long history, but few studies have explored both the socio-economic and ecological aspects of this use. This study was conducted in the Baikiaea plurijuga forests and woodlands in and around Fuller Forest in western Zimbabwe, protected since 1943. It explored the characteristics and dynamics of forest products use by communities surrounding this protected forest. Further, the demography and dynamics of commonly harvested woody species was examined in order to establish the present status of populations of these species. This examination, focusing on diameter class distributions, was aimed at informing whether species populations were expanding, stable or declining in view of their capacity to continue providing required goods and services.. ····· 10361100734

The concept of Buffer Zone (BZ) focuses on the relationship between protected areas and human needs and stresses on the relevance of integrating protected areas with major development issues. The concept is being implemented in both developed and developing countries. However, in some developing countries due to poverty and high population growth rate, protection laws have caused park-people conflict. To overcome this, it is peremptory to carryout a research addressing the concerned authority and provide them with an overview of social and biological status of the VDCs abutting the national park. This book, which is based on a research study conducted in Nepal, gives an insight about the linkage between ecology, economy and social realities. It contributes invaluable information regarding how social and bio-physical context shape the viability of effective management. This book will be especially useful to economists, government authorities, policy makers and analysts, researchers, program and project implementers, social workers and administrators. ····· 10361100637

Eco-geographical analysis on mountain plants

In order to develop an efficient and effective conservation strategy using complementary in situ and ex situ techniques, we must have a clear understanding of each target species geographical distribution, its habitat preferences and requirements, its genetics, reproductive biology and taxonomy. The details of the localities where past collection have been made, the so-called passport data, associated with herbarium and germplasm collections, are a key source of information to guide future conservation activities. For example, if the passport data for a particular species indicates that it has previously been found only in the mountainsides of Saint Katherine Protectorate, then these areas are likely to contain the species today. Looking for it on nearby mangrove swamps in Southern Egypt will be of little use. The ecological, geographic, genetic, reproductive biology and taxonomic data are collectively referred to as eco-geographic data and their analysis is a necessary prerequisite of efficient conservation. ····· 10361100379

Biodiversity inventories of Little Andaman Island, India

für 53.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Tropical rainforests are distinguished from all other terrestrial ecosystem with high diversity of species and life-forms and are the most heterogeneous of the world ecosystems. Andaman Islands are a treasure of plant and animal diversity and home to four aboriginal tribes. namely the Andamanese, Onges, Jarawas and Sentenelese. A century-old cultural history of human occupation in these islands and indiscriminate utilization of plant resources by humans in the recent past, have posed serious threat to biodiversity. The study island Little Andaman although disturbed due to plantation of oil palm, tourism and related activities, harbours rich flora including endemics, and constitutes one of the important forests in the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot. In the study, the tree species richness, density and basal area were greater in all the undisturbed forests as compared to the disturbed forests. In understory plants, weeds formed about 1/4 of the species richness and density and the maximum diversity of weeds were recorded from the disturbed sites. The disturbed sites harboured lowest tree species richness and the highest understory plant species richness due to bioinvasion of weeds. ····· 10361100364

Mitigation of effects of water abstraction on the riparian vegetation

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Water and vegetation are vital for sustaining life. However, they are becoming more stressed following population growth and associated water demands. As a result, most continent discharges are classified as moderate to highly threatened by human activities, partly through water abstraction. Bwathonaro river in Meru, Imenti North District of Eastern Kenya is not exception. The river is experiencing over abstraction driven by a number of forces, including increased irrigation farming. Consequently, downstream flows have now reduced to zero during dry season, thus causing great effects to the riparian vegetation. The severity of the effects has necessitated the adoption of mitigation measures. This book describes measures taken to mitigate the effects of water abstraction on riparian vegetation of Bwathonaro river. With increase in management efforts, the results showed progressive amplification on timing and duration of river flow peaking and retrogressive behavior of riparian vegetation. The results are useful for planning and decision making on viable measures which can reduce the effects of water abstraction on the riparian vegetation of rivers with similar characteristics. ····· 10361100298

Palar River is the source of drinking water for 30 towns and 50 villages on its banks and also used for the cultivation purpose. The tanneries present on the banks allowed effluents in the Palar River, which has become more polluted recently and no longer useful for drinking or agricultural purposes. Due to pollution, peoples around the river are suffering from a number of diseases such as asthma, skin disease and stomach ailment and thousands acres of fertile land have become wasteland and no more used for cultivation (Vellore environmental profile). Palar River was reported as one of the most polluted places of world by Blacksmith Institute in 2006, which are heavily contaminated with salts and heavy metals especially Chromium. Metals contamination is one of the major environmental problems in many countries and these contaminants generally come from various industries like leather, agricultural, textile industries etc. The most commonly occurring metals at these sites are lead, chromium, arsenic, zinc, cadmium, copper, and mercury. Presence of these metals in groundwater and soils may cause a significant threat to human health and ecological systems. ····· 1036199991

Impact of industrial effluents on River Owo, South West Nigeria

für 71.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
Characterisation of the industrial effluents from Agbara Industrial Estate showed the effluents to be varied and complex. Most analysed effluent parameters were above the permissible level of national effluent discharge in Nigeria. Twenty six macroinvertebrate families were identified from River Owo, none of which were found at the effluent outfall. The four families found at the effluent outfall were Tubifex tubifex, Nepa, Erisstalis and Chironomous species. They were the major exploiters of the Industrial Effluents and thus serve as possible pollution indicator organisms. The macroinvertebrate fauna in River Owo were dominated by insects(74.57%), and they were more abundant in the Rainy season compared with the Dry season. All the heavy metals found in the effluents were also found in the River and sediment. Under laboratory exposures,Tilapia zilli accumulated in its tissues 10 times the level in the medium of exposure. Growth of the fish was also retarded by effluents. Growth retardation and metal accumulation were found to be a function of the period of exposure and concentration in the media. ····· 1036199898

Effects of surface gold mining on macroinvertebrate communities

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
The increase in mining activity has resulted in a long term damage of natural resources in Mongolia such as fine sediment inputs to streams as major contributors to the degradation of freshwater habitats. Previous studies conducted in Mongolia have shown changes of functional feeding group structure at mining sites compared with the non-mining sites. However, the fine sediment impact by open placer gold mining on stream communities is not well understood. In particular, it has been not clear which habitats were most sensitive and which relationships between physical and chemical parameters and macroinvertebrate community structure in Mongolia exist. Therefore an important objective of the research was to quantify the effects of open placer gold mining on macroinvertebrate communities in different habitats in river systems related to the spatial and temporal dimensions of the impact.Generally, the results show that due to their local distribution in rivers and their association to the hyporheic zone and the river bottom, macroinvertebrate communities seemed to be strongly affected by these fine sediments, as the intergravel space got clogged and the respiration processes increased. ····· 1036199834

The term water quality is applied universally to refer to the water that meets the universal standards set for legitimate and vital water use at any scale i.e. local, regional and international levels. The evolution of the term water quality has been due to the expansion of water requirements and ability to measure and interpret water characteristics. The definition of water quality depends on the factors that determine it, and other variables that affect the nature of water resource. Pollution and degradation of water quality interferes with legitimate and vital water use at any scale i.e. local, regional and international levels. However, water quality standards have been established for regulatory purposes and are determined from judgment on the criteria involved in the standards dependent on domestic, agricultural, industrial and life in aquatic systems. River water quality status is generally affected by many physical, chemical and biological parameters introduced by natural forces and human (anthropogenic) activities. Water quality criteria, standards and related legislation are often used as the main administrative means to manage water resource. ····· 1036199678
