The Role of Forests in Poverty Reduction in Kenya

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
The link between forests and poverty reduction in developing countries is a subject of considerable interest. Studies have revealed a high dependence on forest resources by neighboring communities for purposes of sustaining livelihoods. However, most studies have focused on the role of Timber products ignoring the vital role of Non-Timber Forest Products in alleviating poverty. Clearly, there exist knowledge gaps on the social aspects of forests, in particular, on the impacts of forest resources on household poverty. This book is an outcome of a field survey conducted in Cherangany Hills, Kenya, to investigate the poverty reducing effect of forests. It uses both qualitative and quantitative analyses to highlight the Poverty-Environment linkages in the forestry sector. The findings should particularly be helpful to conservationists and development practitioners in Government and Civil Society aiming at mainstreaming forestry into poverty reduction strategies. ····· 1036191822

Carbon BUDGET and Stem Cut Propagation Technologies for Rubber Trees

für 44.10€ kaufen ···· Rheinberg-Buch.de - Bücher, eBooks, DVD & Blu-ray
The findings on carbon budget and potentials of stem cut rubber (Hevea brasiliensis)for mass propagation is based on biometrics and statistical computations. Rubber plantation at a maximum age of 40 years could stored up to 468.69Mg/ha Carbon in its tree biomass while a 6 year old plantation of the same species has carbon budget of 31.87Mg/ha. It also revealed that the different C pools of rubber tree significantly related to its total carbon density. The age range of 6-12 years plantation is found to be statistically different with age range 20-40 years. This implies that carbon trapping potentials of rubber tree is highly dependent on age of plantation. on the other hand, the study on the success of stem cut rubber for mass propagation, it was found that older stem parts (brown cuttings) applied with alpha naphthalene acetic acid (ANAA)at a concentration of 1tbsp/3litH2O has 74% survival rate with maximum sprouts and root growth. This is a good indicator that stem cut rubber can be mass propagated even in rural farm level nurseries at minimal cost and labor. This technique is best substitute for sexual propagation of the species during off seasons. ····· 1036191681

Carbon sequestration in terrestrial ecosystem can be defined as absorption of the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by photosynthesis or technology based sequestration activities such as deep-sea gas bed storage of liquefied carbon dioxide (Bass et al, 2000). Terrestrial ecosystem, in which carbon is retained in above ground biomass, underground biomass and in soil, plays a vital role in Carbon Cycle. Most of the community forests in Nepal are recognized as major contributors for fuel wood, fodder, timber and non-timber forest products. Furthermore, Community forests help to conserve wild fauna, soil and water, and also provide an opportunity for income generating activities and institutional development. Also, there is a high potentiality in making income from carbon credit in Community Forestry System under market adoption of Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), a frame work of the Kyoto Protocol. This research helps understand the effects of the processing parameters in the batch solid-liquid extraction process towards the yield of rotenoids resin, rotenone and their biological activities. The correlation determined between all independent variables via statistical analysis would further promote and enhance the usage of rotenoids resin as a phytochemical pesticide or botanical insecticide products. Understanding the effect of processing parameters against the yield of rotenoids resin, rotenone and their biological activities are essential in designing a better processing technology to maintain and preserve the bio-active constituents in the extracts and rotenoids resin effectively. Although genus Derris roots have been identified as a potential cash crop due to its abundance growth in Malaysia, no research work of its own native species has been conducted locally. Therefore, the opportunities to develop an option to the synthetic pesticides by developing an environmental-friendly natural bio-pesticide from local plant species is the main rationale of why this extensive research work should be completed and carried out successfully. ····· 1036191608

Spatial variability and temporal variability of soil chemical and physical properties within a field is unavoidable. Meanwhile, laboratory soil test is usually time consuming and laborious. To satisfy the concept of precision farming, rapid and intensive soil sampling is necessary for describing the uncertainty within a field. Apparent or bulk soil electrical conductivity (ECa) technique for describing soil spatial variability is widely used. ECa includes soil salinity and soil texture. Soil texture has high correlation with soil cation exchange capacity (CEC) hence, soil nutrient contents. The study showed that most of the soil properties and ECa changed from one season to other seasons, except total N. Many soil properties had the same mean values for seasons 1 and 3 such as K, moisture content, silt and coarse sand. Spatial variability of shallow and deep ECa had the same pattern for different seasons even though the mean values were different. Deep ECa showed the pattern of former canal routes clearly as continuous lines about 45 m wide at the northern and central parts of the study area. ····· 1036191599

The irrigation water management planning for cotton crop requires information on optimal thermal regimes i. e. date of sowing, temporal variation of root depth and optimum moisture regimes and sensitiveness of different growth stages to moisture stress. The exponential relationship between cotton yield and seasonal heat unit input was best fitted. The seasonal yield production function was found best fitted in second order polynomial form. The Jenson multiplicative model was found to be the best fitted for describing the effects of both timing and quantities of water consumption on crop yield. The data of benefit-cost ratio showed that under highly deficit and fully water supply conditions, the drip system adoption was not economically desirable. The developed nomographs were found versatile tools for the land and water resources planning. This book therefore, provides a new metric of success for scientists for methodology of water management research and nomograph development techniques for different crops and supplemental to the more traditional cost analysis that most irrigation engineers/planners currently use. ····· 1036191592
